Next, Loren shares with us some of the work he’s done with Mixed Martial Artists, and discusses his role in developing those athletes and some extremely unique obstacles that come with working with high level fighters. “I think that having that chip on your shoulder, especially at our level, when you’re not getting McDonalds All-Americans, when you’re not getting the 4 star, 5 star guys that are automatically going to have some sort of pro career that need to work that need to develop that need to have some sort of kick in the butt at times to to get to where they need to go.”This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by GymAware, the leading tool to measure your athlete’s weight room performance. Episode 138-Justin Kavanaugh, Sport and Speed Institute- Sniffing Out The B.S.
“I’m a big believer in intent matters the most. We aren’t judged on our intent, we are judged on our actions, but the intention is what’s going to maintain the relationship for a long period of time. Because even if, for some reason, you’re working with somebody and it doesn’t work out, if your intention was only to help or your intention was always positive then you’ll always be able to fall back on the fact that you did right by them. Maybe the end result wasn’t what you wanted but at the end of the day you didn’t screw somebody over.”
Today we are joined by The Sport and Speed Institute’s Justin Kavanaugh to talk training, coaching, business, and filtering through the noise. After a brief intro Coach Kav breaks down how he’s built his filter and how it all started with his family and the brutal honesty of his parents, and has led to how he looks at training, relationships, and business. The conversation then leads to educating yourself and your staff and how being invested in that is exceptionally important to how you handle your athletes. We then discuss what leads to winning, and what he sees as the most important factors in winning. We then get into training and some things that he does to build buy in with athletes ranging from high school to the pros. ENJOY THE CONTENT? My Thoughts Monday #35-Jay DeMayo, University of Richmond-Stay Off Other People’s Lawns
“We gotta remember is there’s a chance, that that person who’s owning or running or working at that business, that gym or whatever they train people out of, they have to sell that to that kid. So, we need to understand that we need to be more open to talk to those people so we know the language they were speaking with those kids before they came to us.”This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by GymAware, the leading tool to measure your athlete’s weight room performance. Learn more about “The Rolls Royce” of bar velocity monitoring here: https://kinetic.com.au/gymaware.htmlIn this weeks My Thoughts Monday I discuss a situation that we recently had a run in with. When we are looking at the differences between the private sector (business people) and the public sector (colleges-pros-high schools) there is a a bit of tension because some people over step their bounds when making statements about what someone in the other part of the field does, and once you start to come off as threatening people grow animosity towards that part of the profession. The moral of this story is, stay off each others lawn and play nice. ENJOY THE CONTENT? Episode 137-Nate Harvey, EliteFTS- Paying Our Dues To Get Paid What?

Today we are joined by Nate Harvey of EliteFTS.com to talk about training. Nate starts out by sharing with us how he got into training at a young age, and how EliteFTS had an impact on him as an athlete, and how his voyage as a coach has led him to working for EliteFTS. My Thoughts Monday #34-Jay DeMayo, University of Richmond- Staying In Our Professional Lane
“You do need to stay in your lane because traffic always flows better when people aren’t going in and out of lanes, BUT you have to know what’s going on in those other lanes because if they need help in one of those lanes from you, you need to be able to change lanes and move over there to help them.”This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by GymAware, the leading tool to measure your athlete’s weight room performance. Episode 136-Andy McCloy, BCI Sport Performance and Fitness- Culture Can Come Organically
“It’s not like I’m a culture expert, I never set out to develop a cool culture. It just kind of organically happened. Where we have some of the best kids in the world, but we will put them in the same group as kids who are not even close to the same type of athlete as they are, and even in their school they’re not as social intertwined with all the cool stuff going on. I think there’s a unique dynamic there where those kids are able to socially level up. The kids that are studs are put in a position where they have to coach and mentor younger people, it’s just a really cool thing.”
Today we are joined by BCI Sport Performance and Fitness owner Andy McCloy to talk about the world of training, After a brief introduction Andy starts discussing the role of his facility in the training and development of young athletes, and how their culture has helped develop these kids in ways that have nothing to do with sports training. We then start talking about the role of the private market trainers and where they fit in this world of athlete development in conjunction with the athletes teams staff. This includes ways he has reached out to open up those coaches and develop those relationships. This includes him breaking down how the time of the year and other training/responsibilities with other teams drives decisions to help bridge what they’re doing with what the athlete has going on with other programs and practices. Then, for the second half of the discussion Andy shares with us how he sets up his programming. This includes everything from how they find kids who fit in their program, evaluate their athletes, how those evals dictate progressions and regressions, exercise selection, and how they can easily make daily alterations. My Thoughts Monday #33-Jay DeMayo, University of Richmond-Changing Behavior Is Not A Quick Fix
“When you’re trying to change behavior or something that’s habitual, like eating habits. Eating habits won’t change over night. It’s not like all of a sudden you’re going to talk to an 18-22 year old and you’re going to be like, “alright, so, now you have to get 5 to 7 servings of vegetables every day, OR ELSE, and you’re only going to eat lean protein, OR ELSE. Or else what? Those massive alterations to a habit, to a lifestyle, we all know are consistently unsuccessful. That’s why they’re called eating habits because it’s a habitual type thing.”This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by GymAware, the leading tool to measure your athlete’s weight room performance. Episode 135-Dr.Bryan Mann-Periodization Doesn’t Need An AED
“If we don’t read the tweets. We don’t read these 140 character things that people are putting out, and we go to the actual original works. We see there’s actual brilliance in there, and if we go with their terminology things start to make sense.”
Today we are joined by Dr. Bryan Mann to confusion he sees with coaches today. The first thing he discusses is the idea that periodization is dead. Doc breaks down what periodization is and where the confusion is coming form because of vernacular. The main confusion in is what is periodization vs what is programming. Dr. Mann then goes into the role and importance of what the coaches and practitioners who came before us play a role in how we should be looking at all things training because many of the questions we have now, they already answered.
