My Thoughts Monday #32-Jay DeMayo, University of Richmond-Using Our Interns Questions To Teach Our Staffs

“Social media is good and it’s bad. I think that a lot of people look at a lot of things that are put out on social media and then they’ll see a video and they’ll say “oh well that’s all that coach whatever his name or her name is does. He or she just has them do, you know, that one minute video I saw on instagram and that’s everything, or they don’t understand how they got there or they don't understand where they’re going.”This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by GymAware, the leading tool to measure your athlete’s weight room performance. Learn more about “The Rolls Royce” of bar velocity monitoring here: https://kinetic.com.au/gymaware.htmlIn this weeks My Thoughts Monday I discuss some thoughts on internship programs, why ours needed a renovation (spoiler alert it’s because I sucked at running it), how we are looking to improve it, and ways we are hoping to use it to help educate our interns better and share better information to coaches about what we are doing here to, hopefully, drive better discussions. Episode 134-Chris McCormick, Gardner Webb University-Sunshine and Rainbows on Social Media May Be More Clouds and Dirt in Reality

“A lot of the time, you could win a lot of games and there may not be any impact from strength and conditioning. You might see them one time a week in the in season, but they go undefeated in conference play. OR, we know strength coaches that do an awesome job and then they don’t win a lot of games and they’re not part of a team that wins a lot of games.”
Today we are joined by former Gardner-Webb University Director of Athletic Performance Chris McCormick to talk about real world issues that he has seen as a director. Chris starts out by sharing with us what issues that we, as a profession, need to bring to the forefront about what we do. This leads right into us talking about culture and how that, and the players personalities, need to dictate training programs as much as the need for actual measurable results. Chris then shares with us how he uses open discussion with athletes and coaches to help impact what and how they program, along with how they can serve “two masters” by taking both of their incite. We finish discussing the connection between running your weight room like a business and athlete monitoring and how they connect in communication with our departments. ENJOY THE CONTENT? My Thoughts Monday #31-Jay DeMayo, University of Richmond-What We Say We Do May Corner Us

“So that would be like saying, ‘Team X last year had 7 ACL injuries, Team X this year only had 2. Does that mean that the strength coach did a better job with this team this year or the team last year? What if the team last year, even though they had more than triple the injuries had a better record, won a championship, went far in the tournament?”This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by GymAware, the leading tool to measure your athlete’s weight room performance. Learn more about “The Rolls Royce” of bar velocity monitoring here: https://kinetic.com.au/gymaware.htmlIn this weeks My Thoughts Monday I share a discussion I had with a coworker on the responsibilities the strength coach carries when it comes to what we are attempting to improve in our athletes. We, as a profession, like to say that we “decrease the risk of injuries”, but today I share why I feel like us saying that is our main objective may put us in a corner when the rubber hits the road when injuries happen?ENJOY THE CONTENT? Episode 133-Scott Salwasser- Texas Tech- Prepare The Athlete For Where They Need To Be, Not Where Your Progression Says To Be

“I think that’s really where our profession is going, is you’ve got to have a grasp of the sport. That’s not to say that general means aren’t important. Just lifting weights, heavy squats, heavy deadlifts. That’s not to say that that’s not important, but I think that now, to be really great you’ve got to have a working knowledge of your sport.”
Today we are talking about developing movement skills that transfer to sport with the Director of Speed and Power Development at Texas Tech Scott Salwasser. After a brief introduction Scott dives right into it discussing how he separates the team into groups, and gathers knowledge about each position to provide the best carry over possible for his football players. We then dive down the planning rabbit hole and how the uniqueness of the football calendar sets up his programming, and some things that he does differently, why he does it, and where he see’s a major issue with many “traditional models” of speed development when it comes to football. Next, Scott breaks down how he advances agility work with his players, and how important technique and visual acuity is to having carry over to what they are trying to teach their players. We finish off discussing his programming of jumps and plyometrics for his athletes, and what two roles he sees them filling in his program.ENJOY THE CONTENT? My Thoughts Monday #30-Jay DeMayo, University of Richmond- Who’s Fault Is It?

“Understanding what your specific skill set is and what you can provide for someone is one thing, but if they don’t understand it and they don’t understand: A) what the skill set is, or B) how it can be of value, how is it any way shape or form their fault when they look at it and are like “no I don’t want that” or “this isn’t important”?”This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by GymAware, the leading tool to measure your athlete’s weight room performance. Learn more about “The Rolls Royce” of bar velocity monitoring here: https://kinetic.com.au/gymaware.htmlToday I discuss a conversation that we have had in our office of late about who’s fault is it that admin and coaches may not understand what we, as strength coaches, do for our My Thoughts Monday. This seems to be a universal discussion that I have with coaches around the country, that other aspects of the department do not really understand what we are doing, why we are doing it, and what we can be doing better. To that, I ask the simple question, who’s fault is it? I share a couple things that we are starting to do, and how we are going to, hopefully, move forward to help better educate the coaches and administration on what we are able to do in hopes to drive deeper conversations. Episode 132-Sean Fantuzzi, University of North Dakota- Cover your mouth when you…train?

“That’s why I preach to the guys as much as I can “go to class, go to study hall” because that kind of stuff it shows coaches that you’re willing to prepare. If you’re willing to prepare for class you’re willing to prepare for practices, and it kind of goes hand and hand.”
Today we are joined by University of North Dakota’s Assistant Strength Coach Sean Fantuzzi to talk about training, After a brief introduction Sean starts to break down some of the changes that have been made within the training of his athletes at UND and the driving factors behind the directions they’ve started moving. This leads him straight into discussing how coaching staff changes have impacted his work with the Fighting Hawks student athletes. Next, he touches upon a topic that has been quite ready of late, breathing, and it’s importance in his programming along with how he teaches it based on “Oxygen Advantage” and where he implements this idea. This leads right into the state of stress that student athletes are in, things that contribute to it, how he’s looking at it, and how they’re monitoring practice as a result. ENJOY THE CONTENT? My Thoughts Monday #29-Jay DeMayo, University of Richmond- Preparing for What and When?

“We really pride ourselves as a profession when it comes to finding better ways to do things, better ways to prepare kids, periodizing this that and the other thing, and building the best program we can possibly build. Consistently looking to educate ourselves better to provide better for these kids, but there’s a problem. Right? And that problem, when you’re talking about these fall sports teams is that all to often they train in the spring and they leave for the summer.”This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by GymAware, the leading tool to measure your athlete’s weight room performance. Learn more about “The Rolls Royce” of bar velocity monitoring here: https://kinetic.com.au/gymaware.htmlIn today’s My Thoughts Monday I discuss some issues with the preparation plans for teams that come in after breaks. This problem was based on a conversation with a coworker where we were going through when injuries seem to occur, and have started to make some assumptions about what could be contributing factors to this. The main conclusion to that conversation though is that we need to find a better way to make sure that they’re prepared with they’re not here, if that’s even possible. ENJOY THE CONTENT? Episode 131: Nate Brookreson, NC State-Developing a Collaborative Environment

“The thing that I think is the limiting factor in the college environment is this idea of lack of understanding of other domains, and that we have this inability to clarify or define terms.”NC State’s Nate Brookreson joins us to discuss the model their athletic department is building in Raleigh. He starts out talking about the developing a standard operating procedure in a collaborative group that includes each department including why they have it set, and what the goals of this group is. This brings him to discussing how vital defining terms and roles are, and how that impacts who takes the lead in certain situations. The definition of terms also has a vast impact on training by providing actual goals and directions to go in. Next, he shares with us the role he sees for measurement, where he see’s importance in the data, and what should lead up to collecting and analyzing data. He finishes off giving specific examples of how they have done this at NC State. ENJOY THE CONTENT?
