After a brief run down of his background Jim drives right into how nutritional issues are leading to a majority of the problems athletes have, including shortening their careers. He then shares with us some ways he is looking at blood with athletes in a different manner than “general population” to help figure out what is best to provide nutritionally or supplementally with athletes including a in depth break down of how cortisol affects athletes including some misconceptions of it. We then discuss the role of stress management and some pros and cons of modern methods used to measure stress. He then discusses adapatogens, and how many of them have been used for a very long time, because they work. Jim then discusses methods used to get these nutrients and adaptogens into the system, including the future of delivery systems for athletes and limitations to the ones that we have now. Jim then runs down the rabbit hole of how helping athletes nutrition has helped improve their health, improved performance, and taken better care of them when they retire so they feel better and live better lives. After a quick rundown of how he got to the league and the Sharks we start diving right into the evolution of his in season training program. Mike has evolved it to a year long developmental model, and he shares how this program evolved and with what their focuses are and how he structures his training blocks. Next, Mike discusses how they evaluate the athletes, how often they evaluate them, and who gets access to the information to make sure the athletes are moving the the right direction. This leads him into how the warm up he uses with his guys is the backbone of all of their training where they check a lot of boxes to make sure the guys are best prepped and take care of. With all the travel in the western conference, Mike then discusses what’s involved in making sure the guys are good to go with all the travel and issues usually associated with it. Mike finishes off by sharing with us where the most important parts of nutrition and recovery he sees with todays athletes. After a quick catch up with Doc, Chris gets right into some of the strategies he has had some good success with, and the reasons he feels they were successful. He then is open enough to share with us some of the areas and situations where he has had issues with different portions of the “science” area of athletics, including how he found his role and position in the department in Lexington and the steps he took to get there.
