Myth of the 20th Century

Humans, like all biological organisms, seek to leverage their natural surroundings to their benefit. The human capacity for rapid transformation of their environment, especially in modern times, is so great that some have come to call it by its own geological epoch, the Anthropocene. As with any power dynamic, incentives exist such that those with power seek to retain, and those without seek to gain. Consequently, the usage of modern technology is set to grow, even if it has negative consequences for the health and sustainability of the natural environment. Such is the conclusion of the film ‘The Planet of the Humans’, which argues the environmental movement, and its recent corporate and billionaire sponsors, have become corrupted by the very same cynical motives they outwardly claim to be fighting against. Hailed by many as the greatest city in the world, New York grew from a series of small settlements in the 17th century to a bustling metropolis by the 19th through a combination of excellent geography, intensive trade and industrial development, and a concentration of cultural and business acumen. The growth produced tremendous problems along with the opportunities, as the limits of Manhattan Island in particular forced buildings to grow ever higher and the people living among them to accept more and more cramped living conditions. After the end of the second world war, America strode triumphant, unmatched the world over in surviving capital stock, industrial capacity, and economic and military power. No other industry epitomized this power more than steel, with the saying “where steel goes, the nation goes” capturing the alignment between the incentives of the business, working, and political classes at the time. All the more tragic, then, did the decline of the industry, and the second largest company, Bethlehem Steel, falling into bankruptcy in 2001, reflect the post-industrial weakness of America. Once employing 167,000 in 1957, by the 1980s, Bethlehem was employing only 35,000 and supporting 70,000 pensioners. Eventually these pension and other union restrictions, in addition to moribund management, led to the company’s closure. If the events of 2020 have had a common theme, it is there is nowhere to hide. If the plague doesn’t get you, the riots will, followed by a helpful dose of economic displacement and firestorms from 20,000 simultaneous lightning strikes as seen in California recently. Herbert Hoover’s reputation as President is quite often thought of in less favorable terms, having presided over the United States as it entered into the depths of the Great Depression in the 1930s. After the economic boom of the 1920s, the contrast was stark, and increasingly clear in Americans’ minds as Hoover’s limited attempts at intervening in the economy failed to turn things around. In 1880, the financial sector’s share of US GDP was slightly over 1%. By 2009, however, it had grown close to 10%. Including the related industries of insurance and real estate, that share swells to 21% in 2019, making it the single largest segment of the American economy, followed by trade and transport at 15% and professional services at 13%. Not until 4th place do we find manufacturing, at 11%, down from close to 35% in the 1940s for a country that once outproduced all others, and whose chief export today is government promises to pay in the future.
