The modern world is an integrated system of almost unfathomable complexity, built upon sub systems, technologies, people and practices that if partially removed or neglected sufficiently, result in disastrous supply chain break downs as witnessed in wartime or as the world seized up in response to an over-hyped flu virus in 2020. One of the industries at the heart of the manufacturing economy is the machine tool industry, responsible for “building the machines that build the machines” – mills, lathes, planers, presses, etc. that produce the metal products such as cars, airplanes and household appliances. Without these industrial tools, production would be relegated to hand tools or worse, and for national security reasons is arguably a strategic industry to be protected. In the summer of 1975, two FBI agents were shot and killed after pursuing a vehicle onto private property near the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. This had come after several tense years of strife on the reservation, including the armed Wounded Knee standoff where the FBI encircled for 71 days members of the American Indian Movement who were protesting the corruption of the US-government friendly tribal leader’s administration. In the not too distant future, New York has been walled off, isolating the once great city and turning it into an open air prison camp. The United States, still a military and technological force, is struggling however economically and socially, not to mention politically as its superpower status is challenged by China and Russia. Released in 1981, the plot to John Carpenter’s ‘Escape from New York’ could very well be set today in any of America’s newly burned out cities after months of BLM and Antifa rioting, who sing similar themes as the hijackers in the movie who kidnap the President.
