Dr. Katrina Burrus: Working with a Brilliant Jerk
Dr. Katrina Burrus is CEO of Excellent Executive Coaching LLC and is known for Fast-tracking inspiring leaders to the C-Suite and for Transforming Brilliant Jerks into Inspiring Leaders. She is a keynote speaker and author of, "Managing Brilliant Jerks" and, "Global Leadership," a body of work used by Nestle, Novartis, the World Health Organization, the International Labor Organization, and the United Nations to name a few. She was recently featured in Mexico, India, Kazakhstan, and Russia.Dr. Burrus has 20 years of experience as the first Master Certified Coach and Founding Board Member from the International Coaching Federation in Switzerland. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Dr. Katrina Burrus discuss:What is a brilliant jerk? What enables a brilliant jerk’s behaviorReasons behind the making of brilliant jerksFollowing up on brilliant jerks Key Takeaways:A brilliant jerk is often experienced as abrasive, hurtful, often attacking, but charming in some situations. What separates them from plain jerks is that they are competent and therefore have seen great success in the past. A brilliant jerk’s behavior is often enabled by passive leadership, lack of feedback, or lack of follow-up from the feedback. There are many reasons why a person can become a brilliant jerk, many times it’s because their skills and attitude brought them success in the past and they think changing that might hinder them from succeeding in the future. Brilliant jerks can change - if they are willing to be coached through it. Give them the means to help themselves improve and they can do it. "All the behaviors that they have been molded with are reflective of that lack or need. So they need to recreate behaviors that work, that are more conducive." — Dr. Katrina Burrus See Dean’s TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Dr Katrina Burrus: Website: www.excellentexecutivecoaching.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/Intlcoaching | https://twitter.com/KatrinaBurrusInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/drkatrinaburrus/Facebook: https://business.facebook.com/ExcellentExecutiveCoaching/ | https://facebook.com/Katrina.BurrusLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/MKBExcellentExecutiveCoaching | https://www.linkedin.com/in/katrinaburrusYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DrKatrinaBurrus Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370

He is best known for his highly successful Micro2Millions program, being the author of Stepping Beyond Intention, and his Do it With Dan and Beyond Success podcasts. He is completely self-made and has spent decades perfecting his world-class coaching methodology. His mission statement: “To spearhead an evolutionary uplift in universal consciousness, by awakening people to the importance of their unique role and enabling them to manifest their dream life.” In this episode, Dean Newlund and Daniel Mangena discuss:What is our natural state? Making your inner self respond Embracing moments of contrastMake more by expending less Key Takeaways:Abundance is our natural state. Getting to abundance would actually require reconnecting with that natural state. Your inner self doesn’t respond to just mere words, it responds to the emotional context behind those words. There must also be some foothold behind every input. You can’t just say that you are, you’ve got to be. Moments of contrast, which at the moment might feel like the worst thing that could happen to us, are actually some of the best things that could happen for us if it causes us to shift into a better perspective and find a new way that’s better. You can make more by expending less. You can go to the next level without sacrificing your family, your mental health, or your psychological state. You only have to get everything into a state of flow. "Our natural birthright of abundance does not require hustling, it just requires us to be in flow and do the natural thing of creating value." — Daniel Mangena See Dean’s TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7IConnect with Daniel Mangena: Website: www.dreamwithdan.comPodcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/do-it-with-dan/id1381226331Twitter: https://twitter.com/dreamerCEOInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/dreamerceo/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thedreamerceoLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dreamerceo/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMdAvGk6xa5fptmdULliJrgJoin Club House: https://www.joinclubhouse.com/@dreamerceo Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370

As well as several publications including, Transitioning to Agile Project Management, The Lean-Agile PMO: Using Lean Thinking to Accelerate In this episode, Dean Newlund and Sanjiv Augustine discuss:Making an agile strategy Fixing workflow problems Working as a team of teamsRetraining leadership focus Key Takeaways:Lay out a strategy, or plan out scenarios, make sure the work in your portfolio is working and that you’re focusing on the right things, break down big projects into smaller manageable chunks. If you can’t see it, you can’t measure it. If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it. Make sure that all the work is visible and figure out if you’re working on too much stuff. Work as a team of teams, or a cross-functional group. Figure out how you can make the departments of your organization work together and how they can help each other complete goals. With unity like this, you can keep the value flowing, not only in one department but throughout the whole organization. As a middle manager, you get rewarded for being able to get stuff done and push your own agenda, but as a leader at an executive level, what will grant you the most success is if you learn to work more collaboratively and tap into the genius of other people. Jenn Grace: Why Thought Leaders Need to be Authors
In this episode, Dean Newlund and Jenn Grace discuss:Why you should find your nicheWriting for your target clientHow you can start writing nowBenefits of writing a bookKey Takeaways:Find your niche by evaluating the data points in your business, looking at your client base, and seeing what they all have in common. Going niche and narrow is the only way to go.Don't write for everybody. Start with the question of who you are writing for, and ask what problem you're solving. You can make a book by writing one word at a time. Start with a mind map. Try out transcription if staring at a blank page terrifies you.The process of writing, editing, and publishing can often be brutal and will take a lot of time, but the organization of your concepts and your establishment as an expert in your niche will be worth it. "What's beautiful about going to the process of actually creating a book is that it forces you to create a model, a process, a system to bring the reader through." — Jenn Grace. Heather Ivany: How Reconnecting to Self Builds Resilience and Focus
Heather is a holistic practitioner and teacher of yoga, meditation, and akashic reading. For over 20 years, she's led teacher training, mentorship programs, and retreats. She offers a combination of innovative in-person and online mentorship programs designed to help the modern individual ascend and align.Heather was first drawn to explore the illuminative world of yoga through meditation and prayer, which cultivated a passion for delving into the many facets of this ancient practice. As a result, her teachings work within the framework of our daily lives."I appreciate that every moment is an opportunity to understand ourselves and press the parameters of our growth and feel into the sparkling vastness all around."As a registered ERYT 500 teacher with over 1000 hours of training, she currently mentors individuals privately and in small groups. Her influences are an eclectic mix ranging from Jess Freeman, Ally Bogard, Tanis Fishman, Lindsey Park, Kellyann Vass, Jesse Johnson, Vanessa Jean Boscarello Ovens, Elena Brower, and more.I draw inspiration from the abundance of life in the outdoors where I live in Fernie, British Columbia."Our strength should not act as a shield but rather give the power to open our hearts and encourage compassion and integrity to spread into our lives and communities". In this episode, Dean Newlund and Heather Ivany discuss:How to guide people effectivelyAccessing the home withinExploring other optionsWhat to do with resistance Key Takeaways:People connect to consciousness in different ways. As a teacher, a guide, or a coach, if you impose onto somebody how you think their spirituality should be, then you're not helping them. The answer is within. You can be anywhere on the planet and access your "home within" - once you practice accessing this regularly and start enjoying it, it creates a pleasure center within your brain. Don't get discouraged when you "fail" at any spiritual or mindfulness practice, but take this chance to explore other options that might work for you. Invite resistance, embrace it, and challenge it. It's necessary for the process of growth and in knowing yourself more. "So often we love to be told how to have an experience outside of this 3D form… Our connection to consciousness is personal, and how we choose to... might be very different from how someone else connects to consciousness." — Heather Ivany Click on this link to get a course from Heather Ivany for FREE: https://www.heatherivany.com/freecourse See Dean's TedTalk "Why Business Needs Intuition" here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Heather Ivany: Website: https://www.heatherivany.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/heatherivanyyoga/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Heather-Ivany-Yoga-361635850630763/LinkedIn: https://ca.linkedin.com/in/heatherivanyyogaYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEuFyWemmUk6Dm4i_edb6dw Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370

Katie Burkhart: The Benefits of a Purpose Driven Company
Katie Burkhart is the mastermind behind mlOS™, the system for running a purpose-driven business, and has quickly become one of the go-to experts in the space. She's a serial entrepreneur, keynote speaker, minimalist designer, jargon slayer, and sharp communicator. She synthesizes connections that enable humans to make the most of the time they invest in their work. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Katie Burkhart discuss:What does a non-purpose-driven organization look likeBeing efficient for a purpose The first step to being a purpose-driven companyAdapting your mission and vision Key Takeaways:A company that's not purpose-driven is hyper-focused on efficiency - their most significant concern is how they can make as much money as possible and nothing else. Efficiency for efficiency's sake doesn't work for human beings. Efficiency is excellent, but it's a means to an end - the end being your organization's purpose. The first step to becoming a purpose-driven company is to listen. Listen to your team, listen to your leaders, listen to your customers, and of course, listen to your intuition. We need to understand what's happening and engage our people in what must be done while getting the leadership involved. It could last you for a hundred years if you set a powerful purpose. However, do check your mission and vision statement - once a year for the former and once every three years for the latter at least. We live in a world that constantly changes, and our mission and vision can adapt to that while still being aligned to our purpose. "Money is not the purpose of the company; it's the outcome of effectively pursuing your focus purpose… Making money as a resource, not as the goal…" — Katie Burkhart See Dean's TedTalk "Why Business Needs Intuition" here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Katie Burkhart: Website: www.matterlogic.coMedium: https://medium.com/matterlogic | https://medium.com/@katieburkhartLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/matterlogic | https://www.linkedin.com/in/katharineburkhart Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370

Gaetan Pellerin: The Superpower To Choose How You Feel At Work And Home
Gaëtan is an experienced sales and marketing executive with over 30 years of global experience in negotiation and sales management, having negotiated multi-million-dollar contracts in Japan, China, Thailand, Europe, and North America. He spent the last 11 years as a negotiation consultant and executive coach while focusing on his development.Gaëtan has always been motivated to understand what's driving us: emotions, fears, desires. He loves helping and coaching people and seeing how much they can gain in confidence and the ability to be themselves. This passion, combined with his development, led Gaëtan to write a book:Mindful nEGOtiation: becoming more aware at the moment, conquering your ego, and getting everyone what they want. As per the title, his book explores the relation and impact of mindfulness in negotiation situations where ego can be triggered. Gaëtan says: "By being mindful in negotiation, you can change the outcome for good."Originally from Montreal, Canada, Gaëtan lives in Southington, Connecticut, with his wife and stepson. He has two grown-up sons in Montreal. When he's not busy helping people, he hikes, mountain bikes, or cooks with a good glass of wine; he is fascinated by and always looking for the next book that can teach him something new. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Gaetan Pellerin discuss:Why negotiations failSetting up a win-win situationGive and take in negotiationsInternal and external motivations Key Takeaways:Typical negotiations fail because people fall victim to their own emotions - and they don't know how to handle those. Mindful negotiation is being able to recognize those emotions and take control back. Set up a win-win situation. Prepare for what emotions you might feel, plan many different "what if" scenarios, and introduce new variables that give you power. Negotiation is always a give and take - so when preparing and planning for your emotions, also design and understand the other person's emotions and motivations. Think about what in the situation might trigger you. Negotiation is never only about money, and it's also about something else. Understanding external and internal motivations and recognizing that internal reason is always more critical will train you to be a better negotiator. "Every time motivation comes from someone or something outside us, and our ego is likely in the driver seat. When the ego is in the driver seat, we cannot connect with our intuition." — Gaetan Pellerin. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Alice Heiman discuss:How organizations can survive and succeedHaving a Plan A, Plan B, and Plan CAgility and authenticity in communicationPrioritizing customer experience Key Takeaways:The world is constantly changing - the most agile and flexible companies will survive and succeed. If you've successfully pivoted this year, get ready to do it again! There's a saying that if you need to have a plan b and a c, then your plan a isn't good enough - but that's not true in modern reality. Give some space in your strategy for flexibility. Prepare for the event when things don't go your way.Make virtual calls better by making them more interactive and more similar to their pre-pandemic counterpart, but at the same time, be prepared to adjust to what other people are comfortable with doing. The CEOs whose companies will win are CEOs who look entirely differently at making sales today. Sales aren't about the sellers or the tools, it's about how customers want to buy, and sellers aren't the only ones impacting the customer experience. "Ask this simple question: 'What are we doing to make it easier to be our customer and harder to be our competitor?' Steve Brody: The Secret to Growing Your Business
About Steve Brody: Former VP Mktg Coca-Cola | Getting Successful CEOs to their Top Level | Help CEOs Answer 'What's Next for Me?' | Vistage Master Chair | Your CEO Coach. Author of What Happens After the Sale (on Amazon.com) For Mid-Market firms, he focuses on the intersection of Leadership, Strategic Plans, plus Exit Planning. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Steve Brody discuss:How leaders can prepare the company for transitionBuilding an exit planConsidering a candidate for successionDeciding on payout Key Takeaways:How a leader leaf is indicative of how he leads. How they show is a reflection of their personality.Think about the exit plan as a road map. There are numerous steps to exit in a good way. First, look if you've got an appropriate successor in the organization. If you're not able to find anyone suitable, that's when you can look outside for one - though that will take more time.Succession doesn't have to be based on loyalty or popularity - it depends on the organization's size. In small companies, popularity and commitment come into play more intensely. In contrast, in more prominent companies, often, leaders look at who's suitable or who they can train to do the job. There are two types of founders - one type takes some money out of the organization, and another constantly reinvests their money back into the organization. The founder who reinvests their money back into the business should have more payout than the former type. "Understand what behavior you have, what you enjoy, and what you're passionate about - that's one of the components that's important before somebody can figure out how to let go or help develop someone else because they have to look at what area do they need complementary skill around them." — Steve Brody. What should be preserved, and what should change about meetings? What to think about with your "back to the office" plan after Covid Key Takeaways:Company cultures need to change to accommodate remote workers Culture is not always the same across a company; it often comes from each teamWe need to connect as humans first, and the business comes afterCovid has changed company cultures in ways we never thought of previously "if you look at corporate culture, it's not like a blanket statement; people don't align with that anymore. And it's really 'What is the culture of the team? What is the culture of the two or three people who work together all the time?'
