In South Africa, satellite TV provider DStv announced it was putting eight video podcasts onto its TV channels. “This is ... a bold step into the future where linear television meets the gutsy, unfiltered world of digital storytelling,” says Shirley Adonisi, director for channel owner M-Net. But, the “unfiltered world” doesn’t always work with broadcast standards. Five months later, at least two shows have been cancelled, following “breaches of ethical standards”; one show, Open Chats, being dropped after racist comments that may be illegal (although that specific episode wasn’t brodcast). One affected podcaster said: “If DStv was looking for polish, they shouldn’t have gone down the podcast route.” After Spotify returned podcast linking tool Podlink to its original developer, the service has now been rebuilt. The new Podlink has an updated list of podcast platforms that are sorted by popularity, the ability to set a default app, and highlights trailers. Its successor episodes.fm now redirects to Podlink; all existing links (for both) should continue to work. The Empowered Podcasting Conference is to return to Charlotte NC, USA for its second year. The research also suggests that Spotify is the main podcast platform used in the country - BBC Sounds being more popular than Apple Podcasts. Nielsen launched Nielsen Podcast Fusion, a new dataset powered by Edison Research. It integrates Edison Podcast Metrics into Nielsen’s widely used media planning tool, Nielsen Media Impact (NMI). NPR and Ocean Media are among the charter subscribers at launch. For the first time in the US, 18-29 year-olds now listen to podcasts just as much as AM/FM radio. One of the biggest and most successful podcast producers, Wondery, is to be restructured by Amazon, laying off a reported 110 people including the company’s CEO, Jen Sargent. Wondery was bought by Amazon at the end of 2020 for $300mn, then doubled its staff. It currently has around 360 published shows. Wondery’s narrative podcast studio will be combined with Audible. Marshall Lewy, Wondery’s Chief Content Officer, will also join Audible. The company’s creator-led shows (New Heights, Armchair Expert, etc) will be merged with the existing Talent Services team, rebranding to Creator Services. Ads and sponsorship will merge with a team at Amazon Music. Ads and sponsorship will create an entirely new team that includes the existing ad-sales team at Amazon Music. The story was broken by Bloomberg in a paywalled article. (Podnews readers can save on a subscription). Business Insider carries the memo from Steve Boom explaining the changes, and noting that podcast revenue has grown by 4x since the company was bought by Amazon. Why the change? Video killed the owl, it seems. The memo reads: “The podcast landscape has evolved significantly over the past few years. As video podcasting has grown in popularity, we have learned that creator-led, video-integrated shows have different audience needs and require distinct discovery, growth and monetization strategies compared to audio-first, narrative series. The rise of video has also blurred the lines on what it means to be a podcast creator.” Amazon’s decision should be read alongside the performance of its other podcast acquisitions. Amazon bought podcast hosting company ART19 in June 2021, which has never achieved more than a 1% share of total episodes published, and currently hosts 3,900 shows (other enterprise hosts like Megaphone, Simplecast or Triton/Omny each host around 20,000). Amazon splashed $80mn on the SmartLess podcast: but that deal only lasted three years. Last year it spent $100mn for New Heights, promising international audio adaptations (which haven’t happened) and live events - there hasn’t been a live event for the show since Amazon’s ownership. Amazon Music started slowly adding podcasts in 2020; it has a 13% market share for music in the US, but achieves just a 1.6% share of US podcast downloads. What happens when one podcast has a very similar name to another - and they’re recording in the same building? Much confusion - particularly for one guest who gets taken into the wrong podcast studio. It now has 696mn monthly users (up 11%). Spotify’s revenue from ads decreased by 1% to €453mn (US $523mn). Daniel Ek tackled this head on in his opening remarks: “The one area that hasn’t yet met our expectations is our ads business – we've been moving too slowly and it’s taking longer than expected to see the improvements we initiated take hold. It’s really an execution challenge, not a problem with the strategy. While I am unhappy with where we are today, I remain confident in the ambitions we laid out for this business… we are working quickly to ensure we are on the right path.” Spotify’s VP of Global Advertising, Lee Brown, is to leave the company by what’s described as a mutual agreement. How is video working on Spotify. In Dec 2023, the company only had 100,000 video podcasts on its platform; now, according to Gustav Söderström, there are “more than 430,000 video podcasts on Spotify and video continues to outperform with consumption trending higher and higher - growing 20x faster than audio-only consumption since 2024. More than 350 million users have streamed a video podcast on our platform, a 65% increase year over year.” These figures look impressive; but Spotify only launched their big video push in Nov 2024 - and many larger video podcasters are quietly given $5,000 of advertising to kick things off, which might mean only a temporary uplift.
