I’m on day four of a solo getaway. I currently have five of my kids and two grandkids living full time in my home. Circumstantially the days are full. We get them to four different schools in the morning, there is constant grocery shopping, clearing, fixing something that’s broken, dealing with issues with the six or seven cars at our house at any given time, and the list goes on an on. So every two to three months, I get away. I recharge with solitude. I’m on day four at a cabin out in the boonies of the Rockies and am thinking on how the circumstances often drive our lives, but they are not our true, authentic drive. We all know the debate between nature and nurture. I grew up with a focus on nurture. We become what we want. We blaze our own path. We make our reality. This seemed to work until later in life when, with some help from others, I was shown some sabotaging patterns in my life. A graph was made of my life and especially regarding my work, it showed me start things, built them, then they came to an end. There were always reasons, but the only common denominator was me. But it made no sense to me. I was dumbfounded. I finally got led to looking at some genetic predispositions. I’ve never liked this idea because I don’t want an excuse to fail. And guess what. I don’t. But now I am aware of some issues I have and I can now address them and succeed where before I habitually sabotaged. There is a study about the reality of genetics that just blows me away. Everyone at some point has left a light on in their car and come out the next morning to a car that should be ready to roll, and the battery is dead. You have to jump start it. We do this with ourselves a lot by going to be with some lights left on that keep us from quality sleep, and we wake up need a jump start. For some reason unknown to me, narcissism is the new label slapped on anyone we feel is being selfish. And yes, I’ve had it attributed to me. And I feel it about others as well. In an article from the Center for Neurocognitive Excellence, they way a simple definition of narcissism would be an over-preoccupation with ourselves or being overly desirous of the praise or admiration of others to the extent that it negatively impacts our relationships. I’ve not met anyone who doesn’t display these tendencies from time to time. But if we really want the praise or admiration of others, but want to positively impact ourselves most, and positively impact others, we’d choose kindness. It proves to be the ultimate weapon.
