Today we're going to talk about three different English idioms, where first we'll have a quick example using them, and then we'll try and define and explain and give you some more examples of how you can use. Kevin Them as. Kevin Well, remember to check our website. Kevin Or study guides and more. Kevin We also have links to our WhatsApp, Facebook and other social media, so you can come and use these idioms together with us. Jack So, Kev, how's that new job treating you? Kevin It's alright. Kevin It's a little hard. Kevin Still trying to find my feet. Jack Well, keep your chin up. Kevin Yeah, you know, that's that's a good rule of thumb. Kevin Thanks, man. Kevin I'll remember that. Jack No problem. Kevin OK, so again, we had the three, we went back and forth, so maybe this was a little easier to to hear for everyone we had. Kevin Find your feet. Kevin Keep your chin up and then, uh, rule of thumb, and you'll notice that all of these idioms, all three of these, are using your body parts, right? Kevin So feet, your chin, your thumb. Kevin We've all body part idioms and finding your feet. Kevin What does that mean? Kevin I mean, it's very easy to find my feet. Kevin I know exactly where my feet. 발표자 1 Yeah, yeah, yeah. Kevin I can touch them. Kevin So So what does it mean to to find your feet somewhere? Jack So the idiom find your feed, so finding your feed means. Jack Figuring figuring something out or getting used to something. Kevin Yeah, getting used to it. Jack So in in a dialogue I was asking you I. Jack Said. How is your new? Jack How is your new job treating? Kevin Right, right, right. Jack You like how is? Jack How is. Jack Your new job going. Jack And you said I'm still finding my feet, so that means you you're not comfortable yet, you're still learning, you're still figuring out how the company works, you'll still figuring out. Jack What your job duties are and so you're not 100% comfortable, yet, you're still finding your feet. Kevin Yeah, I think, I mean, you can maybe even picture this like a baby learning how to walk, right? Kevin Like when babies are young, any animal or human babies when they're young, you know, they they. Kevin When you first start. Kevin Walking you're not very good at it. Kevin Yeah, you know, you you know what you want to do. Kevin The baby looks around and they see Mom and Dad walk. Kevin Thing and it's like I want to walk in so they try and try and try, but it takes them a little while until they find their feet until they get used to it. Kevin And then they're able to walk and it's the same thing in a company or a new anything. Kevin It takes a little while to get used to it. Jack Yeah, it takes a little while before you feel stability or stable, you know? Kevin Yeah. Nice. Yeah. Until. Jack And so being honest, yeah, unstable is not finding your feet yet, but stability is. Kevin You really feel? Jack I found my feet. Jack I'm comfortable, I'm stable. Kevin Yep, yeah. Kevin So you could even say, like, how's the new job? Kevin Oh, I've been there for a while. Kevin I've really found my feet now I'm very comfortable now I know what I'm doing. Kevin Up here. Kevin So what about keeping your chin up? Kevin Your chin? Kevin It's on your face, so I want to keep my chin up. Kevin Like, what am I doing? Jack Yeah, keep your chest. Kevin Where am I pointing my chin? Jack Yeah, well, when your chin is up, you feel, you feel proud, you feel confident. Jack And when your chin is down and your head is down, you look defeated. Jack You look down sad. Kevin Right. Jack So keep your chin up just means. Jack Cheer up, you know. Jack Put your head up. Jack Don't be. Jack Don't be ashamed. Jack Don't be shy. Jack I keep your chin up your you know you're doing fine. Jack You're doing a good job. Jack So yeah, I. Kevin Mean there's a lots of this, like even if you're feeling a little bit sad, right? Kevin And you're having some problems and it's like, if you're feeling sad, just keep your chin up and and just doing that will help you to feel a little bit more, you know, happy or comfortable. Kevin Even if you're just faking it out, don't don't act sad. Kevin Don't look sad. Kevin Like, just keep trying. Kevin Just keep your chin up and act happy, and then you'll feel better from doing that. Jack Yeah, exactly. Jack I yeah, I have one more example I can use. Kevin Yeah, so. Kevin Oh, nice. Jack Like when a when a team loses a game and they played really, really hard, but they lost the game a lot of times, the parents and the coach will say keep your chin. Jack Up because you don't. Jack You tried your best and you did a good job. Jack You lost the game. Jack But you don't need. Kevin Right. Jack To put your head. Jack You don't need to hang your head down. Jack You can keep your chin up. Kevin Right. Jack And so that's a really common example. Kevin Yeah, still be proud of of what you did. Kevin You still worked really hard. Kevin You still tried really hard. Kevin Keep your chin up. Jack Keep your chin up, yeah? Kevin And then finally our rule of thumb. Kevin So we've got lots of rules, right? Kevin Like in our classroom, you know we have rules of speak English only or do this, but what's a rule of your thumb, right? Kevin The the the. Kevin Big finger on your hand your your thumb. Kevin What is a thumb rule as we look? Jack I I'm. I'm. Jack Going to confess, make a confession here. Jack I have no idea where this idiom comes from. Jack Like I don't know the genesis of this. Jack But I do know that a rule of thumb is like a rule of life, a rule that you can live by. Jack So don't don't hurt other people, OK? Jack That's a rule of thumb. Jack You don't do that, OK? Jack And so we have, you know? Jack There are many rules of thumb, but they're just like common sense rules that you can live. Jack Buy in order to be, you know, live a a a good life and be a good person. Jack So we follow. Jack These rules. Kevin Rules of thumb are just general things that you should do right, like and. Kevin It's not always a good life necessary, though obviously just general general rules, right? Jack Yeah, that's true. Yeah. Kevin Like if you're talking to a friend who they haven't been out on a date in a really, really long time. Kevin And like, I've got a date tomorrow, I've got I'm taking a girl out to dinner. Kevin What should I what should I do and be like? Kevin Well, a good rule of thumb right could be to wear some nice clothes and buy dinner for your date. Jack Right. Kevin It's a rule. Kevin Of thumb, you don't have to. Kevin Do it, but it's generally a good idea to. Kevin Look nice and be on time and do those type of things. Kevin It's it's a rule. Kevin Of thumb. Jack Yeah, for it. Jack Another if you're taking a test. Jack Bring an extra pencil. Jack That's a good rule of thumb, because if the if the lead brakes on your pencil and you need a backup, you have one more pencil to finish the test. Jack So there's another rule of thumb. Jack Just bring an extra pencil with you. Kevin Yeah, kind of good advice. Kevin Good, good general rules that you should always, always follow a good. Kevin Rule of thumb. Kevin Always leave 5 minutes. Kevin Early, you know, so that you're you're on. 발표자 1 Yeah, yeah. Kevin Time like, don't. Kevin Leave on time. Kevin Leave just a little bit early just in case something happens. Jack And is a rule of thumb something you do one time or is it something you do every time? Kevin No, it would be something that you always do in whatever that situation is. Kevin It's just say, yeah, you don't. Kevin Have to do. Kevin It, but it's generally. Kevin A good idea? Kevin To do whatever, whatever that thing is. Jack Yeah, maybe it's not even only make yourself happy, but you're going to impress other people. Jack Say, oh, what a what a gentleman, what a gentle woman. Jack She always, you know, he or she always shows up on. Jack Time, yeah. 발표자 1 Right. Jack That's because your rule of thumb is leave 5 minutes early so you're never late, so yeah. Kevin Yeah, so a good rule of thumb is remember to check our website so you can find information there and our PDF and you can learn a little bit more and and help find your feet learning English as well. Jack There you go. Kevin So thanks for listening everybody. Kevin Remember, as I said, check our website for more and links to our WhatsApp and Facebook. Kevin And if you could on Apple Podcasts, leave us a quick review. Kevin That would be really helpful. Kevin For other people to get some idioms from A-Z. Kevin See you next time. Jack Bye, bye. Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-fluent-mind-esl-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Yeah, kind of building.00:03:28KevinOh, OK.00:03:29KevinSo it's not like it's like subtitles.00:03:30JackOn an idea, right, like, yeah.00:03:33XochitlLike the famous bringing words like I am once again asking for financial support and we would like blacking out.00:03:40XochitlBut I am once again asking for your emotional support and once again asking.00:03:44XochitlFor whatever, like, yeah, yeah.00:03:47KevinYeah, OK.00:03:48KevinI've I've seen those, though.00:03:49KevinMean there's so many meme.00:03:50KevinGenerators online as well.00:03:53KevinI have made some of my own as well, like just copying the format of 1 but you know changing it to fit the context and sending it over.00:04:02KevinYeah, means are a cool part of Internet culture.00:04:06JackWhen when do you think that they started like when did when was the first?00:04:10JackBecause I know the first meeting was like the one of the first means.00:04:15JackIs like the kind of dirtbag guy, you know, he's had these sideways and he's kind of a a scumbag, you know?00:04:24JackSo anytime, is that what it is that you?00:04:24KevinScumbag Steve.00:04:26발표자 1Yeah, yeah.00:04:26JackIs that him?00:04:28KevinThat you ask.00:04:29XochitlSo something like that.00:04:30KevinIt's scumbag, scumbag Steve.00:04:30JackYeah, so like what would be like a situation where you would use scumbag?00:04:35JackHe would be like if somebody.00:04:37JackDid something kind of rude to you or whatever.00:04:41JackYou would reply with a picture of scumbag Steve and that would that.00:04:46JackI mean essentially that's is that I mean, how right?00:04:49JackAm I using the memes correctly?00:04:50JackI'm I'm I'm not really sure.00:04:52KevinYou know what I would see a lot of times is like for those memes because they usually have text.00:04:58KevinOn them, and you can put your own text on them as well.00:05:01KevinAnd So what would be an example of a a scumbag Steve thing?00:05:05XochitlI remember 1 words like.00:05:08XochitlThere's hand towels in the bathroom, but he uses your, she told.00:05:12XochitlLike, wipe his hands and I remember that it.00:05:15XochitlWas just like scumbag Steve.00:05:16KevinYes, that's great.00:05:18KevinSo so maybe Jack you come over to my house and you use.00:05:21KevinThe wrong towel.00:05:23KevinAnd so then, like in our group chat, you know of, of everyone, you come over and I reply later with that.00:05:29KevinLike Jack comes over to my house and uses the wrong towel and I use this scumbag Steve meme and I and I post that.00:05:32JackOr I drank your last beer or something like that.00:05:36JackLike I take the last beer out of your fridge and then you go to get your beer and I'm already drank.00:05:41JackIt so I'm scumbag Steve, you know?00:05:46KevinYeah, those are, yes.00:05:47KevinKind like Steve is definitely one of the older means not not super old, but it's one of the older, older memes for sure.00:05:54XochitlThat was one of the first means because that was like the first one that is exposed to that one in awkward Penguin and the little kid that does like.00:06:02XochitlThe fish thing.00:06:02XochitlLike, yeah.00:06:03JackYeah, that's right. I.00:06:04KevinAwkward Penguin.00:06:05KevinAn awesome Penguin.00:06:06KevinRemember like where they switched the colors and switched the sides?00:06:08KevinYeah, those are definitely older and it it's really fun seeing memes.00:06:13KevinCome back because.00:06:15KevinScumbag Steve, awkward Penguin.00:06:17KevinYou don't see those too often these days, actually, but you know, ten years ago that was.00:06:25KevinYou know, almost every everything on Reddit was one of those, one of those memes.00:06:30KevinAnd sometimes people bring them back and fill them back, and it's always great when they're when they're used correctly.00:06:36JackYeah, I I remember another meme of is it like a nerdy kid named Brian or something and he's got braces?00:06:45JackAnd he just has bad luck all the time.00:06:48JackLike, you know you, Brad.00:06:48KevinBad luck, Brian. Yep, that's.00:06:50JackLike Brian.00:06:51JackIs that what he is?00:06:51JackIs am I right?00:06:52XochitlYeah, good memory.00:06:54XochitlOh my God.00:06:55XochitlSaid that like Brian.00:06:56KevinI'm, I'm.00:06:56KevinI'm reading a lot.00:06:57JackBrian he's got bad luck.00:06:58JackWhat's his name again?00:07:01JackYeah, so like he he shows up at 10:30, but the test started at 9:30 or something like that, you know? So there's some some horrible luck situation. Yeah, bad luck, Brian. Scumbag Steve.00:07:01발표자 1Give it to me.00:07:12KevinI think one of my favorites of the old names was overly attached girlfriend.00:07:17KevinDo you remember that one?00:07:17XochitlOh yeah.00:07:18KevinIt was like the girlfriend who's like got this like this look up.00:07:21KevinJust like I love you look.00:07:22KevinAnd and it was always just, yeah, like everything you do, she's just overly attached to you.00:07:29KevinShe's an interesting example of of meme culture as well.00:07:33KevinThe the woman who was that because most of those means it was just some random.00:07:38KevinIt was like the picture of Socho.00:07:39KevinThat her friends use.00:07:41KevinBut then it.00:07:41KevinSlowly just goes out into the actual Internet and people.00:07:44KevinJust start to.00:07:45KevinUse it.00:07:46KevinAnd so it was like, oh, that's me.00:07:47KevinLike there's there's confused social that yeah, so the the girl who did overly attached girlfriend, she actually used it to make a bit of a a social media presence.00:07:49JackYou're famous, it went, it goes viral, I mean, yeah.00:08:00KevinShe got a bit famous from it.00:08:02KevinI think she had like a pretty famous Instagram account and Facebook page and things for for a while.00:08:07KevinI think she's calmed down now.00:08:08KevinI never really followed her, but I.00:08:09KevinJust saw things occasionally.00:08:11KevinCome up. Yeah, she yeah.00:08:11발표자 1She had a.00:08:12XochitlGQ but I remember seeing YouTube video and then and it was just funny because like the the means are cultural too, right?00:08:20XochitlAnd then so like a lot of the things that like she.00:08:22XochitlSaid like she would she?00:08:24XochitlWould name herself as like examples of overly attached girlfriend and I'm thinking and this is confirmation I get into with my friends.00:08:28KevinRight. OK.00:08:32XochitlA lot.00:08:32XochitlIn Mexico, like, those things aren't considered like overly attached girlfriend. In the US, it's like.00:08:37XochitlIt's really weird.00:08:38XochitlLike casual dating here is really formal compared to the US like US is really casual here. Like you could go on a casual date and the person will.00:08:47XochitlTake you out to eat.00:08:48XochitlAnd pay for.00:08:49XochitlEverything involving and like in the US it's like.00:08:51XochitlHey, you wanna Netflix and chill?00:08:53XochitlLike it's just it's weird to see the differences between like and.00:08:57XochitlIt just goes back to me.00:08:58XochitlIt's like the.00:09:00XochitlThere's means in Spanish language and names in Korea and using English.00:09:05KevinMeans definitely are very cultural.00:09:08KevinYeah, it's it's interesting to see how how the same thing.00:09:12KevinIt's like, this is funny, right?00:09:13KevinAnd someone in other countries like, no, but what do you mean?00:09:16KevinI don't, I don't understand.00:09:18JackYeah, what's the joke, right?00:09:18KevinLike, I mean, this doesn't.00:09:20KevinYeah, exactly, but that's humor.00:09:20JackYeah, yeah.00:09:22KevinI mean, that's actually something that would be.00:09:24KevinInteresting to talk about, maybe in another episode later on is is humor types and what works in America?00:09:31KevinI mean, even in English speaking countries, it's different.00:09:33KevinAmerican humor is different from British humor and it's famous.00:09:37KevinThere's there's British.00:09:39KevinAnd that's the same with means, of course, as as well, my favorite for means.00:09:44KevinI don't know if you guys ever use it like I we're on WhatsApp, of course, right?00:09:49KevinAnd WhatsApp is A is a pretty good app for chat. And my favorite chatting app though is discord.00:09:55KevinBecause Discord has an amazing mean library, you can basically type it.00:09:59KevinThey've got like thousands and thousands and thousands of memes to to send.00:10:03KevinIt's basically the emote acan of of WhatsApp. So instead of sending a little sticker or whatever, instead of sending a modicon, you send me to everyone. And so yeah, discord is great.00:10:13발표자 1For for that.00:10:14KevinYou have an entire conversation in meme only.00:10:18KevinWell, so for everybody listening out there, what's your favorite meme?00:10:22KevinAnd even if it's in your language, actually, maybe try and reply to us in our WhatsApp chat or on our web page and actually send us a meme.00:10:29KevinI would love to see some some non-english means, although please if it's in your language translate it to English and then we can see if we can actually understand.00:10:37KevinWhat the joke itself is because I I.00:10:41KevinI think it would be interesting to see both the meme and how it's used, so please share your memes with us here on the A-Z English podcast.00:10:52KevinSo thank you everybody for listening.00:10:54KevinRemember, you can join our WhatsApp group.00:10:56KevinCheck our web page, tell us what you think, and if you're on Apple Podcasts, you know, click that.00:11:01KevinFive star button and leave us some comments that will be very helpful.00:11:04KevinSo we'll see you all next time.00:11:06발표자 1All right.
