The A to Z English Podcast | What's your favorite Christmas tradition?

In this episode of The A to Z English Podcast, Xochitl and Jack discuss their favorite Christmas traditions.Transcript:00:00:00JackYou're listening to the A-Z English podcast.00:00:14JackWelcome to the A to Z English podcast. My name is Jack and I am here with my co-host social. And today we are going to do a quick talk episode where we just discuss a topic. And today's question is what's your favorite family Christmas tradition?00:00:33JackAnd so, so I'll let I'll start with you first. What's your your favorite family Christmas tradition?00:00:40XochitlWell, Jack, I would say my favorite family Christmas.00:00:43XochitlWell, I have two, so I'll go over both briefly. I think for my American side, my favorite is probably making sugar cookies with my grandma in the US, we have that idea or the myth.00:00:59XochitlMyth that Santa comes to house and leaves presents and the children are supposed to leave milk and cookies out for Santa as a snack when he stops by your house. So.00:01:08JackRight.00:01:13XochitlWe would always.00:01:13XochitlMake cookies from scratch with my grandma and we would decorate them and I still really enjoy making cookies and decorating them. And last.00:01:24XochitlYear or two years.00:01:25XochitlAgo for Christmas, my grandma, maybe three years ago now, my grandma gifted me some old.00:01:33XochitlCookie cutters like some family cookie cutters.00:01:36JackLike from the 60s, you know those like metal ones? Yes, they're the.00:01:38XochitlYeah, like the vintage one. Yes. And I was really happy and excited about that. And that's definitely my favorite tradition.00:01:41JackBest, right? Yeah.00:01:49XochitlFor US style Christmas.00:01:52JackAnd do you?00:01:53JackDo you put a layer of like like like colored sugar coating? So like you'd make like a Santa with like a white belt and you make a like a tree which with green you put like green dye in it and stuff.00:01:54발표자OK.00:02:08XochitlYeah, you put like you make powdered sugar with like milk or water and you add the dye in and then you just, like, slather it with a knife or whatever onto the cookie.00:02:18발표자But we.00:02:19XochitlUsed to do that a lot with my grandma, but now that I make them.00:02:21XochitlKind of on my own, I still make.00:02:23XochitlThe icing but.00:02:24XochitlI just do like a little outline on the cookies because they're way too sweet for me otherwise.00:02:29JackYeah, I mean.00:02:30JackIt's just it's like sugar on sugar, right? Yeah.00:02:32XochitlYeah, it's really it's pretty much unpalatable. I mean, it was for me always my, I mean, not saying my grandma's recipes unpalatable just to sugar is like too much. I'm not a huge sweets person.00:02:46XochitlSo the sugar on the sugar is like tooth, achingly sweet. And I think in the US we have like, a a really sweet palette in general, because desserts are not that sweet. Other places in the world.00:02:58JackNo, you're right. That's that's a good point. I find that there there's more buttery kind of a flavor to like cake and things like that that they don't put so much sugar. It's almost sickly sweet in the US.00:03:12XochitlYeah, for sure.00:03:13JackSometimes, yeah.00:03:15XochitlAnd there's not that much.00:03:16XochitlOf a flavor profile because like, there's not that much depth of flavor, it's.00:03:20XochitlJust like sugar.00:03:20XochitlAnd more sugar.00:03:21XochitlThere's not like much more. Yeah, but for my Mexican tradition, I would say in Mexico, the presence actually come on three Kings Day and a lot of the Christmassy type.00:03:22JackSugar and sugar.00:03:35XochitlTraditions happen.00:03:36XochitlAnd then, but we do celebrate Christmas as well, but I would say it's more oriented around like a meal together. So I liked doing things like making tamales with my mom and my favorite absolute favorite thing is punchy, which is like fruit punch.00:03:56XochitlBut it's hot. It's like hot food and and it's really delicious. And my mom has the absolute best recipe.00:04:05XochitlMe that I have ever tried anytime someone is like ohh here's a cup of punch. I just know I'm gonna be disappointed because it's not as good.00:04:13XochitlAs my moms.00:04:16XochitlAnd she gave me the recipe, and I've since shared it with uh. Well, I've shared the punch, not the recipe with other people. And they agreed with us.00:04:22JackRight. Keep that secret, yeah.00:04:25XochitlYeah, my mom might stab me, but yeah, I think that that's definitely probably one of the one of my favorite.00:04:37XochitlHoliday traditions and in Mexico, like I said, the gifts and the present stuff is.00:04:42XochitlMore at a later date and during.00:04:45XochitlThis time we have Posadas which like are you walk around with candles and go like door to door caroling kind of.00:04:56XochitlAnd different people like receive you and you might get like.00:05:00XochitlPunch or hot chocolate or stuff like that.00:05:04JackYeah, OK. It's almost like the song the the, You know.00:05:08JackUM, we wish you a Merry Christmas that that song, you know, bring us some figgy pudding. It's like, give us something, you know, bring us a snack for singing a song to you for Carol and.00:05:20발표자Right.00:05:20JackYou you know.00:05:21XochitlYeah, in in Christmas carols. It is like pretty American, I guess. But like the post status is kind of a different thing. You're kind of. You're supposed to be recreating the religious aspect where, like, Mary and Joseph went door to door asking for shelter.00:05:37JackAlright, OK.00:05:38XochitlIf you're sad that literally means shelter or like refuge. So yeah, that's kind of the interesting aspect of.00:05:46XochitlHow about you, Jeff? What's your favorite Christmas tradition?00:05:49JackOK, well, mine are much more vanilla than yours. I mean, yours are very rich and interesting and I'm I'm thinking mine are like.00:05:59JackNot very interesting.00:06:00JackNow, but there are, there's a couple that I I really enjoyed. The first one is obviously.00:06:07JackDecorating the tree.00:06:08JackLike I love it. I love to decorate the tree. So you know, you gotta, you gotta get some Christmas music on.00:06:10발표자Ohh yeah.00:06:16JackYou know.00:06:19JackYou know, as the as the the stereo plays, you know, chestnuts roasting on an open fire, you know, like these, these old kind of Bing Crosby Christmas songs, you know, from the the 1950s and the 1960s. Those are my favorites, you know.00:06:37JackAnd and you know, maybe like a a Swiss miss hot chocolate with some marshmallows in it and and then start decorating the tree, usually with my daughter, we decorate a.00:06:52JackTree we.00:06:53JackA little tree because we live in Korea. It's not such a common tradition here to to get a real tree.00:07:00JackAnd to set it up, actually I think it's pretty much illegal to do a real.00:07:05JackTree I think.00:07:06XochitlAlso, the houses are a.00:07:08XochitlLot smaller in Korea generally speaking, than America, right, right. Yeah.00:07:11JackYeah, there's not a lot of space to put.00:07:14JackA real tree? Yeah. I mean, it's just not it. It it, wouldn't it?00:07:18JackDoesn't make any sense.00:07:19JackTo Korean people, so we use a a fake tree here and but we we put the lights up and we we have the decorations and a lot of them are.00:07:30JackNone of the decorations are are ornaments that my daughter made in elementary school.00:07:35JackAnd we just you. So the guy has a, you know, so they'll be like a baby picture of her or something and it's just really sweet. And so that's that's our one tradition that that mainly my daughter and I do together and she's coming back this week to from America to visit and so she's.00:07:54JackOne of the things she mentioned was she wants to put the tree up, so that's really I haven't done it yet, so I'm I'm saving.00:08:01JackIt for her.00:08:04JackThe second Christmas tradition that we we started a long time ago. I don't do it anymore, but we did it when I was was younger, was we made gingerbread houses.00:08:16XochitlOhh, that's so fun.00:08:18JackYeah. Have you ever done that before? Have you made it?00:08:20XochitlNo, I haven't. And I would love to, but I haven't done that before.00:08:26JackYeah. Yeah. So my we, my mom would bake the, you know, the walls and everything. Homemade, like, from scratch. It wasn't like a, you know, where you can buy like a kit. Now you just everything's already already made.00:08:42JackBasically you just make you just have like the.00:08:47JackI don't know.00:08:47JackWhat you call the cream, whatever that keeps it together, the icing. Thank you. That holds it together. But my mom made the icing from scratch that she baked the the the gingerbread house. And so we would, you know.00:08:51XochitlYou like the icing?00:09:03JackWe would have.00:09:03JackLike bowls of M&M's.00:09:05JackAnd gum.00:09:07JackAnd all these different candies and you know, you'd be everyone. All the kids would be licking the the icing, you know, while they're making the house and.00:09:16JackThe roof would be falling off of one house because it's too heavy, you know, structural collapses occurring regularly, but at the end of the end of it, you, most of us would have like a nice little gingerbread house. And then, you know, I mean, obviously the best.00:09:35JackPart of it is.00:09:36JackEating it so slowly it would get picked away where all the M&M's are gone 1st and then someone would go after the gum drops and then all that's left. Is this like rock icing?00:09:50JackAnd stale cookie. You know that it's it's inedible, but it was always really fun to to build gingerbread houses and it's it's they look really cool when they're when they're done really well they look really cool. I think it's fun.00:10:12JackSo those are my two, yeah.00:10:12발표자Yeah, I've.00:10:14XochitlBeen on the.00:10:14XochitlInternet this year, people doing like charcuterie board gingerbread houses, so they're like savory instead of sweet.00:10:20JackOhh nice OK.00:10:22XochitlReally neat looking. I'm like I definitely would eat that also, not just make it eat it quickly because I it has like the cheese and the crackers and the cured meats and stuff.00:10:35JackOh, that's really cool. Yeah, because, I mean, like, a real gingerbread house with all the candy.00:10:40JackAnd stuff. It's kind of.00:10:41JackIt's probably like 10 to 15,000.00:10:44JackCalories on that thing, you.00:10:46XochitlKnow and it's.00:10:47XochitlLike sweet, it gets one-dimensional after a while like the flavor, and you get kind of sick of it. I.00:10:51XochitlThink, at least for me.00:10:53JackAlthough if you put, uh, if you put uhm.00:10:57발표자What do they?00:10:57JackCall Mint chocolate M&M's on it.00:11:01JackThose things are like.00:11:03JackI'll I'll eat those all day long. Forever. They're amazing. I I have to stay away from those I they.00:11:05발표자Thank you.00:11:09JackDon't have them.00:11:10JackIn Korea, and I'm so glad they don't have them here. Like it's it's so dangerous.00:11:17XochitlThose are actually really beautiful.00:11:18XochitlTraditions, doc. I'm glad you shared those.00:11:21XochitlUh, yeah. In this episode of The A to Z English Podcast, Jack, Salimeh, and May talk about superstitions from their countries: USA, Iran, and Malaysia.Transcript:00:00:00JackYou're listening to the A-Z English podcast.00:00:14JackWelcome to the Ages English podcast. My name is Jack and today I'm with my good friends saleme and may.00:00:22JackAnd today I want to do a quick talk episode where we just really quickly talk about superstitions. And so let me give you an example from America. OK. So in America, we believe that the number 13 is an unlucky number.00:00:41JackSo in some cities, if you have like an older build.00:00:46JackThe building will go to floor 12 and then the next floor is 14. They just don't put the 13th floor. I mean the 14th floor is the 13th floor, but they've used the number 14 and just skip over 13 because we believe that that number is bad luck.00:01:07JackAnd there's other superstitions that are really common in American culture. For example, Black Cats are bad luck, never walk under a ladder. That'll give you bad.00:01:24JackLock never open an umbrella inside a house. Always open the umbrella outside. If you open it inside, it will bring you bad luck. If you break a mirror it will give you 7 years of bad luck and I'm wondering, do you have any superstitions?00:01:44JackIn your in your countries that people.00:01:47JackEve and I'm wondering what they are, because I think every country, every culture, has its own. And so in the West, ours are like the number 13. Don't break a mirror, don't walk under a ladder, don't open an umbrella. Inside those kinds of things. So what do you guys have?00:02:07JackThey can.00:02:07MayYou were mentioning about number you were mentioning about number just now?00:02:11MayUh, yes. It's uh for Chinese. So we believe that, uh, #4 is not a good.00:02:19MayNumber I mean when? Because when we translate?00:02:22MayNumber of four.00:02:23MayInto Chinese language. It also means die.00:02:28JackRight, number 44 means death in in Chinese, right?00:02:32MayYeah. Yeah. So whenever like for, for instance, when we're when entering the OR going to the 4th floor, some anything to do with four. So usually they will remove the four.00:02:51MayOr maybe replace the number four with something like 3A?00:02:56MayAh, so yeah, something like 3A usually would be 3A.00:03:02JackYeah, yeah, that the same thing in Korea too. It goes like first it goes like in like a building on the elevator. It goes 123F.00:03:13JackLike they don't like the number four, yeah.00:03:15MayOhh OK, so well, we usually we don't put #4 uh, sorry three uh F but sometimes you see.00:03:24May3A.00:03:26MayOr maybe they went they put something. Yeah, or.00:03:29Jack3/8 and then 512-3315. OK.00:03:35JackRight.00:03:35MayYeah, 3A.00:03:37JackOK.00:03:37MaySo something else, as long as it.00:03:40MayIs not #4.00:03:43JackRight. Yeah, I think that's that's really common in Asia because that that we have that here.00:03:47JackToo in Korea?00:03:49JackThat the number four is is just don't talk about it. So what if you're born? What if your birthday is April 4th?00:03:58MayWe can order them.00:04:00JackIs that is.00:04:01JackThat just like devices like are the parents just like totally destroyed? If that happens like, you know, don't have this baby today, this month to the 4th month to the 4th day 2004, that would be terrible.00:04:09MayNo, no, we can't change. Yeah. And another thing, don't bring the umbrella inside the house. I mean, I mean, close the umbrella close before bringing.00:04:27MayIn into the house. So some people believe.00:04:31MayUh, if we bring the umbrella or if if you open the umbrella inside the house, some other entity will follow us. So we that's why we close the umbrella.00:04:43JackWhen you're bringing, like bad spirits into the.00:04:47MayYes, spirit or another creature. Life creatures created by the universe or God. So to be exact girls. Something like that. So we usually close the umbrella.00:04:55JackRight.00:05:02May1st and then if the umbrella is that then we will open it inside the House again but not bring it from the House straight inside the house outside the House, in straight into the House.00:05:12JackYeah, never. That's that's funny. Yeah, I think that's that's like a I think that's like a British influence in Malaysia maybe. Right. Because in in England that's that's a that's a a common superstition is never open an umbrella inside a house, you know. And I think that.00:05:31JackI think it's probably started a long time ago when people would like bring a wet umbrella inside, you know, and the water would get everywhere. So then somebody said, don't do that. Ghosts will come in, you know, or something. And so the kids are scared and they always close the umbrella outside. But it was really just to stop the water from getting.00:05:51JackIn the house, right?00:05:52MaySleeping everywhere.00:05:53JackYeah, dripping everywhere. Exactly. OK, alright. Yeah.00:05:57MaySalima maybe she has any superstition, probably.00:06:00JackAny superstitions in Iran?00:06:02SalimehWhat I was thinking currently, uh, I don't remember any, uh, any of number that has bad luck for us. But we have something in my culture not for old year that when we say we want some numbers I don't know because my parents they they know the adult people know which numbers is not good for wedding.00:06:23SalimehNo. Sounds like OK, 17 not good. Do that in 8-18 and I don't know why they do that you know. But I just know we cannot have, you know we have the certain days and numbers to do the like a wedding or ceremony. But the story the origin of this.00:06:42SalimehKind of thing.00:06:43SalimehI have no idea. I have to, you know, ask my parents about this, you know and yeah. And and about the other thing because, you know, yesterday or two days ago, I was, I heard the sound of.00:07:00SalimehWell, in the outside, and my sister told me for some families that the album is good. You know, it's like a good luck. But for some of the families is the against. It's bad luck. But for us, apparently there is a good luck. So the sound of an owl. So this is good for us.00:07:22SalimehYeah, this this.00:07:23SalimehIs, you know, they said recently? My sister told me so. Yeah, I know. So I don't know how they figured out. Yeah.00:07:27JackSo then the sound of an owl is.00:07:30발표자There you go.00:07:31JackYeah, I wonder.00:07:32JackWhy in some parts it's good luck in some parts it's bad luck. That's really interesting.00:07:38SalimehYou know, I I just asked, but you know, no answer. This is just the thing that we're learning from our parents, you know.00:07:45JackThis is The funny thing about superstitions is that I don't think we don't. You often don't know what the origin is, right? But I think I think a lot of the origin comes from like if you walk under a ladder.00:08:00JackIt's dangerous, right? Someone, because if someone's working up on the ladder and they drop a hammer, it could fall on your head, or you could bump the ladder and you could knock it over. And so the person falls down. So instead of saying don't do that, it's dangerous. They just make up. Ohh, it's bad luck.00:08:20JackTo go under the ladder and so.00:08:24JackYou know, just like scaring children to to behave properly.00:08:29JackBy making up these crazy stories that are that make no sense but they're. But if, if so many if it happens so many times, it's like it really becomes part of the the culture. Like people really believe this stuff. You know, there's one more that's.00:08:46JackReally, you know.00:08:46SalimehEven if yeah, even if we don't believe that, but I avoid doing that in that time. I mean about that Wednesday I remember my, you know, Mom was telling me that I don't know the exact name of you know the cutting.00:08:48JackYeah, go ahead.00:09:00SalimehNo, my mom telling us, don't do that on Wednesday. This is the padlock just Wednesday. I mean, you can do that every not Wednesday and even, OK, this is so for for me. So stupid. But still when I realized, OK, it's Wednesday so Oh no, don't do that. You can do in.00:09:19SalimehThe other day.00:09:21SalimehEven I don't believe that. I just follow it, you know, naturally.00:09:26JackWhen we're when we're children, we had a we have a a saying we would say step on a crack break your mother's back. So if you're walking on a sidewalk, never step on the crack.00:09:38JackAlways step on the clean part of the of the of the concrete or the sidewalk, and so even today when I'm walking on the street, I try not to step on the cracks. I try to step over the crack and it's so stupid like it's it's not gonna hurt my mother to if I stuff.00:09:59JackThe crack, but just just in case, you know, like I love my mother. Uh, just in case I'm bringing some.00:10:06JackBad luck to her.00:10:07JackI just don't step on cracks when I'm walking on a sidewalk.00:10:12MayFunny, that's funny.00:10:13JackAll right. The A to Z English Podcast | Would you rather have a roommate who constantly cleans but never speaks, or a roommate who constantly speaks but never cleans?

In this episode of The A to Z English Podcast, Jack is joined by guest hosts May and Salimeh. Together, they answer the following Would you rather question:Would you rather have a roommate who constantly cleans but never speaks, or a roommate who constantly speaks but never cleans?Transcript:00:00:00JackYou're listening to the A-Z English podcast.00:00:14JackWelcome to the A to Z English podcast. My name is Jack and today I am here with two of my good friends Saalimah from Iran and may from Malaysia.00:00:24JackYeah. And we are going to do a would you rather question and today's question is would you rather have a roommate who constantly cleans but never speaks or a roommate who constantly speaks but never cleans?00:00:44JackAnd I'm going to start with Salimeh first. So Salimeh, what would you?00:00:49aJackIn a roommate?00:00:50MayYeah. Jack, maybe you can. Maybe you can before we start maybe.00:00:53MayYou could define the prove it is it.00:00:56JackOhh yeah, that's interesting. Yeah, OK right. Cause may before we started recording today May mentioned that in Malaysia a roommate is a person who you share a room with and a housemate is someone who lives in your house together. But you have different rooms. And in English we just use the same word for both.00:01:17JackSo if you live in an apartment and you and you share that apartment with another person, but you have two bedrooms and so one person stays in one bedroom and another in the other bedroom, you would still refer to that person as my roommate.00:01:32JackAs your roommate. So yeah. OK, so, Selena, what do you think? Yeah.00:01:33MayOK, OK, got it checked.00:01:37SalimehThank you. Well, this is easy for me actually, because I would rather to be with the roommate. It will cleanse constantly. No speaking, you know, because I don't care about the cleanliness and I don't mind if you know she doesn't talk at all. So I have still have a clean room.00:01:57SalimehClean hands and also I have enough. You know there is no noise. All all silent I can work.00:02:04SalimehOr study or whatever and you know, and no interrupting or no one is gonna disturb me. So this is my answer.00:02:14JackSo for you it's OK, like if you're not friend like close with your roommate. You would rather they just be like a good roommate, but you don't.00:02:22JackHave to be friends.00:02:24SalimehYeah, yeah. For for me, it's OK.00:02:26SalimehBecause I can have my own friends.00:02:29SalimehThis is totally fine for me.00:02:31JackYeah. Yeah, OK. OK. Alright, that's pretty good. That's a good argument. You make a good point.00:02:36SalimehYeah, living in dormitory. So we I have.00:02:39SalimehA lot of.00:02:40SalimehYou know, like a lot, a lot of. But I had a few roommates and I I didn't, you know, and they not all of them were my friends. We we were just roommates and we were.00:02:52SalimehLet's share within room. You know the House, so this is OK for me as long as you know they are clean and care about the cleaning cleanliness.00:03:00JackRight. And respectful. That's like pretty important too. You don't want to have a bad like dynamic or anything, but in this case it's just a person who's very quiet but is always cleaning. OK, so you're going for the clean, the clean house. Alright. May what about you? What? What would you rather have constantly speaks, never cleans.00:03:20JackConstantly cleans but never speaks.00:03:22MayI have this same view as Selima. I prefer to have a roommate.00:03:30MayWho is clean and when she when she is clean, obviously she will also clean her room.00:03:40MayThe house. Maybe the her her bedroom. The the living room.00:03:47MayKitchen so everything is clean. I mean, I can find friends from another side. I can go out and hang and hang out with people at the shop. Or maybe I can call my friend to talk.00:03:59MayTo however, if she.00:04:04MayIt's not a clean person. I will definitely have a hard time because probably she will leave her things everywhere and then she will not throw her rubbish in her room. Maybe she wouldn't wash her clothes constantly and that will.00:04:22MayCreate a bad smell from her room and it of course it.00:04:26JackRight.00:04:27JackAnd she's always talking all the.00:04:28MayWould spread.00:04:29JackI'm right.00:04:30MayYeah, I mean, if she.00:04:33MayTalks something nice.00:04:35MayIt will be fine, but then if you're talking too much, I mean we need to have our own space as well. So for that reason, yeah, I prefer to have a person clean, but less talking. Yeah, clean, but less talking.00:04:42JackYou guys.00:04:54JackOK, now I'm gonna.00:04:56JackAgree with you guys because I think like.00:05:01JackThis is the description of the perfect roommate. It's very hard to find a roommate who never talks but just cleans all the time. Like how amazingly good would that be? That would be so awesome, right? Just a person that's kind of hanging out there, cleaning the dishes, doing the dishes.00:05:20JackCleaning the table, vacuuming the floor, but then you don't really even have to, like, talk to them that much. You can just do your own thing, watch Netflix, read a book, whatever, and have your friends, you know, go see your friends and hang out or whatever. I think it's actually the definition of the perfect women.00:05:36MayYeah. Cool. That's nice.00:05:40SalimehIn this situation, we can be the targeted person. We can, you know, speak, because we are like a talkative and we love, you know, speak, talk a lot and that can that person can be listener, you know, because she's she's quiet and we talk and she listens. So this is.00:05:57SalimehThe perfect match.00:05:58JackYeah, that's true. Right? Like your roommates?00:06:01JackJust doing the.00:06:01JackDishes and you're just telling, telling your roommate all about your day and all the problems you have. And I got in a fight with my boss or whatever, and they're just cleaning away and listening to you. Yeah. I mean, it's the perfect. It's the perfect roommate, if you designed.00:06:16JackA roommate in a laboratory.00:06:18SalimehRight.00:06:19JackThat would be the perfect roommate. Yeah, it would be just like that. Alright, listeners out there. Let us know what you think. Do you agree with the three of us that the quiet roommate who is always cleaning is the best roommate? Or would you prefer someone who is more talkative?00:06:21SalimehRight there.00:06:39JackThat you can chat with, but let's the cleaning kind of slide a little bit and is not so.00:06:45Jack80 around the apartment, check out our website agencyenglishpodcast.com.
