He is the former Global Chief Information Officer of Deloitte, one of the world’s largest professional services organizations for over 330,000 people in more than 150 countries and territories. As Deloitte’s Global CIO, Larry led 10,000 IT professionals across the world and drove significant revenue as the lead client partner for several of the company’s global clients. In 2021, after more than 30 years in service, Larry retired from Deloitte. He emphasizes the importance of listening to the voices inside you and trusting yourself. He explains how to add value as a leader while surrounding yourself with people who are better than you. Larry also outlines the characteristics that he thinks made people want to help him rise through the ranks and underscores how the support of others was crucial to his professional success. “How did I—a skinny Black kid from an island of 35,000—become the Global CIO of the world’s largest professional services firm? Now, let’s take this to a business setting. If you were working in a senior leadership team, how would you handle communication when people start feeling slighted? In this episode, I discuss handling conversations to clear the air or mend a slight. Leading You-Self Mastery, The Key to Freedom

What do Leonardo da Vinci, Jesus, and the Buddha have in common? They all highlight the power of self-mastery, self-discipline, and self-control. I find that their wisdom on self-mastery speaks to me, especially as someone who has severe ADHD. And whenever I do the Mastering Overwhelm workshops, I pepper their axioms throughout the entire session to remind everyone, including myself, about the value of self-mastery. There’s simply no higher good than the discipline of oneself. Discipline is freedom. In this episode, I share quotes from da Vinci, Jesus, and the Buddha about self-mastery and freedom. I explain why leading up, leading an organization, and leading a team all start with leading yourself. I also reveal what the worst self-esteem killer is and offer advice on building self-discipline. “There’s no higher good than the discipline of yourself—discipline is freedom.” - Mark Silverman This week on The Rising Leader Podcast: ●     A little test for everyone●     Leonardo da Vinci on mastery●     The Buddha on conquering oneself●     Jesus on ruling the spirit●     Why leading a team starts with leading yourself●     Building self-discipline and why it’s freedom Our Favorite Self-Mastery Quotes: ●     “The really important kind of freedom involves attention and awareness and discipline—and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them over and over in a myriad of petty, unsexy ways every day.” - David Foster Wallace●     “They who rule their own spirit have won a greater victory than the taking of a city.” - Jesus●     “One can have no smaller or greater mastery than the mastery over oneself.” - Leonardo da Vinci.●     “One who conquers oneself is greater than another who conquers a thousand men on the battlefield.” - Buddha●     “True freedom is the ability to place one’s attention where they want to, when they want to, and for how long they want to.” - Unknown Grab Your FREE Copy: Only 10s Book Are you a busy executive or organizational leader? People-Centered Leadership with Tom Mendoza

Tom Mendoza is the former President and Vice Chair of NetApp, a hybrid cloud data service and data management company that has ranked in the Fortune 500 list since 2012. After 25 impressive years of service at NetApp, Tom retired from the company to share his wealth of knowledge and experience by guest lecturing on the power of corporate culture to benefit the younger business generation. He also currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors for mParticle, Varonis, and VAST Data. Tom holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame and is an alumnus of Stanford University's Executive Business Program.Tom joins me today to discuss why he attributes his career’s success to his curiosity and interest in people. He shares why he doesn’t like the word “networking” and why self-awareness is essential to every leader in any organization. He describes the leadership skills he lacked and what he did to change and improve them. Tom also highlights why a people-centric culture is more powerful than a data-centric one and explains why having children later in life has changed Tom’s perspective on work, life, and career.“Know their hopes, dreams, and aspirations; if you know those things about somebody, they know you care—and people don’t care what you know unless they know that you care.” - Tom MendozaThis week on The Rising Leader Podcast:Tom’s interest in people and how he’s used that for successCaring about and getting to know people in high-pressure situationsFinding the time to build a connection with someoneStaying in contact with people and following their stories and successDeciding who your trusted advisors areNavigating disagreements and what to do after being shot down in a group meetingThe signs that someone will be successful in your teamKnowing when to coach and when to part waysShowing someone the impact they make on othersResources Mentioned:Tom Mendoza speaks at West Point on Leadership, Part IPart II: Tom Mendoza speaks at West Point on LeadershipTom Mendoza Presents: A Conversation with Dan WarmenhovenBook: How to Castrate a Bull: Unexpected Lessons on Risk, Growth, and Success in Business by Dave HitzConnect with Tom Mendoza:Tom Mendoza on TwitterTom Mendoza on ForbesTom Mendoza on LinkedInGrab Your FREE Copy: Only 10s BookAre you a busy executive or organizational leader? Self-Awareness In Leadership with Brian Souza

Brian Souza is the Founder and CEO of Productivity Drivers, a sales leadership training and consulting firm specializing in building world-class, high-performance teams and organizations. He is also a New York Times bestselling author and a highly sought after keynote speaker. His book The Weekly Coaching Conversation is an informative and accessible coaching framework backed with years of thorough research. He has influenced and instructed over ten thousand sales leaders and managers worldwide with clients that include Google, ServiceNow, Boeing, and Wells Fargo. He reveals how a creeping feeling of lack of direction and meaning led him and his wife to quit their high-status jobs to reevaluate their lives while on a worldwide sabbatical. Brian stresses the need for people to look at the quality of our lives and why we should be considering what we will think of our life lived when it comes to the ‘rocking chair test.’ He also explains the necessity for sales leaders to have genuine introspection of their methods and results and why self-awareness is key to achieving the right mindset for a high-performing leader. “It starts with awareness and, more specifically, self-awareness. It's realizing that how you perceive your management approach is probably very different than how your team members perceive your management approach.” - Brian Souza Today on Mastering Midlife: ●     Why escalating his career too fast and too early meant Brian needed to tap out and reevaluate●     How to motivate sales leaders with both extrinsic and intrinsic methods●     Why we should be thinking about designing a life rather than just ‘making a living’●     How to take a moment to search for introspection and reflection of your life●     What happens when a great leader has meaningful conversations with their workforce●     Why there needs to be continuity within a corporation's management philosophy Connect with Brian Souza: ●     Productivity Drivers Website●     Brian Souza on LinkedIn●     Book: The Weekly Coaching Conversation: A Business Fable about Taking Your Team's Performance - and Your Career - to the Next Level Are you a busy, overwhelmed business leader? Through my work as an author and executive coach, I’ve discovered the 10 lies we all tell ourselves that keep us away from true productivity and creativity.  If constant firefighting is part of your daily grind, I have a free gift for you. My “10 Uncomfortable Truths” about overwhelm, from “Only 10s, Confront Your To-Do List – Transform Your Life.” Go to www.markjsilverman.com, click on the red banner and receive your 10 videos (one minute, one per day) as well as the first chapter of the book.  While you are there, check out some of the other ways I may be able to help you on the journey. Mastering Midlife...Together! Thanks for tuning into today’s episode of the Mastering Midlife Podcast: How to Thrive When the World Asks the Most of You with Mark Silverman.  Once upon a time, I was sick, depressed, suicidal—and wanted to make a million dollars. How did I make the transition from being incapable of selling, depressed, and in bad shape to making a million dollars? Leadership. I describe how leaders can heavily impact the lives and well-being of their mentees.
