The Most Effective Tool You Forget to Use

I didn’t think of The Rising Leader—it came to me: it picked me, and I answered the call. When I started pivoting to The Rising Leader, I was having so much fun. And though I was putting my heart and soul into writing the book, rebranding the podcast, and creating a keynote, it felt like everything was flowing—until it didn’t. It started to feel like I was pushing a rock up a hill. What came out of an inspiration became a hustle-and-grind. That’s when I realized that I'd fallen out of receivership. In this episode, I discuss receivership, how you can access it to reach your full potential, and letting your intuition—instead of the lies of hustle-and-grind—guide you. I also share the story of how Dr. Hew Len used Ho’oponopono to help transform and heal patients at a mental hospital, discuss Dr. Jeff Spencer’s Full Potential Play concept, and suggest activities you can do to help you relax and return to a state of receivership. “You can’t be at full potential until you add intuition or receivership, this exponential component, to your arsenal.” - Mark J. Lazy Leadership

You’ve probably seen a video making rounds on the internet recently: a gentleman speaking to an economic forum sharing his rather controversial take on unemployment. The gentleman claims that today’s workers are arrogant and feel like they can get away with anything and their companies owe them; that we need to “put employees in their places” by doubling unemployment and having hard economic times. Autocratic leadership—thinking that you have to beat people into submission to squeeze productivity out of them—is not just antiquated, but lazy as well. Unfortunately, as wild and outdated as it sounds, it’s prevalent thinking.  In this episode, I discuss how leading with an iron fist is lazy leadership and reveal the common denominator between accomplished, effective leaders like Beth Perlman, Deloitte CIO Larry Quinlan, and NetApp President Tom Mendoza. I discuss the power of empathy and care as core leadership traits. I also highlight tailoring your leadership approach according to personality type and underscore building trust through genuine care for others. “Amazing leaders who have accomplished so much have a common denominator: they run towards fire.” - Mark J. Silverman This week on The Rising Leader Podcast: ●     A controversial, outdated perspective on employment●     The willingness to tackle challenging tasks and help out your team●     Radical Candor and the need for empathy and effective feedback●     A client’s experience with feedback and empathy●     The only way to gain the trust of your people●     Tailoring your leadership approach according to different personality types Resources Mentioned: ●     Book: Lead From The Heart: Transformational Leadership For The 21st Century by Mark C. Mastering Spontaneous Public Speaking with Matt Abrahams

Matt Abrahams is a professor, keynote speaker, and martial artist. He is a leading expert in communication and serves as a lecturer in organizational behavior at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business, where he received the school’s Alumni Teaching Award. Matt teaches popular classes in strategic communication and effective virtual presenting. Additionally, he teaches public speaking and co-teaches improvisational speaking in the Stanford Continuing Studies Program. Matt is also a sought-after communications consultant and coach who has helped numerous presenters prepare for Nobel Prize presentations, TEDx talks, the World Economic Forum, and other high-stakes talks and speeches. He is the author of Freaking Out and hosts the award-winning podcast Think Fast, Talk Smart. Matt joins me today to discuss managing public speaking anxiety and how to effectively navigate spontaneous public talks. He explains why anxiety from public speaking can’t be truly overcome and shares the two-pronged approach to managing the symptoms and sources of public speaking anxiety. He illustrates how we can reframe spontaneous public speaking situations not as threats, but as opportunities for exploration and collaboration. He outlines the “Pace, Space, & Grace” approach to high-impact, high-intensity conversations. He shares a story of serendipity and why he makes it a point to say “yes” to opportunities whenever possible. Matt also outlines the three “Rs” people must consider before asserting their viewpoint and underscores how persuasion involves more than convincing another person to do what you want them to do. “Most communication we do as leaders is spontaneous. We work hard on the presentations and meetings we run but, in reality, a lot of what we do in our everyday lives is spontaneous.” - Matt Abrahams This week on The Rising Leader Podcast: ●     Glossophobia and its roots●     Learning to manage the fear of public speaking●     The “feel/real divide” and how we can shift our mindset about public speaking●     The Spotlight Effect and focusing on the value you bring to your audience●     Quick exercises to relieve the symptoms of public speaking anxiety●     How to speak effectively in impromptu or spontaneous situations●     Showing up as a powerful leader and team member in meetings●     How to make your voice matter in group conversations●     The secret to effective persuasion●     How to properly apologize when you’ve made a mistake Resources Mentioned: ●     Podcast: Business Minds Coffee Chat with Jay Scherr●     Book: Radical Candor: Be a Kick-Ass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity by Kim Scott●     Speaking Up Without Freaking Out | Matt Abrahams | TEDxPaloAlto Connect with Matt Abrahams: ●     Matt Abrahams Website●     Podcast: Think Fast, Talk Smart The Podcast●     Think Fast, Talk Smart on Instagram●     Think Fast, Talk Smart on YouTube●     Think Fast, Talk Smart on Threads●     Think Fast, Talk Smart on TikTok●     Think Fast, Talk Smart on Twitter●     Matt Abrahams on LinkedIn Grab Your Advanced Copy of The Rising Leader Handbook Do you find yourself rising through the ranks of your company so fast that you wish you had a manual to becoming an effective leader? Slowing Down to Speed Up

“Am I working too hard?” is a question I get a lot from people—and one I received from the host of a podcast I recently got invited to. My answer to that question is another set of questions: when you’re “working hard,” where does it come from and how does it feel on your body? Depending on how you answer, you’re either working on something you love—and are probably there by choice—or working for the wrong reasons. In this episode, I explore working too much and what you can do when you’re working hard for the wrong reasons. I also describe how I once worked hard, crashed, and burned because I was running away from fear. I also share the power of slowing down and letting your intuition guide you to your next steps toward a more meaningful path. “Slow down, take care of yourself, allow your intuition to show up, and check where you’re coming from. You’ll get further; you’ll have sustainable energy and motivation; and life will be a little bit more fun.” - Mark J. Silverman This week on The Rising Leader Podcast: ●     Assessing where your hard work is coming from and how it feels on your body●     How to stop and calibrate to know you’re working on the right things●     Doing your “Hell, yes!” things and your Only 10s●     Dr. Jeff Spencer on receivership●     What to do when you feel desperation in your work●     Why the hustle and grind culture is crap Related Episode: ●     Playing the Bigger Game with Dr. Jeff Spencer Leader, It’s Time to Rise! Thanks for tuning into this week’s episode of The Rising Leader Podcast. Your Official Job and Your Unofficial Job

Are you the go-to person for everybody at your workplace? Do people come to you all day, every day, to ask for help in exchange for that tasty dopamine hit from getting praised for a job well done? If yes, then you might be someone like me. As someone with a “Happy Helper” personality type, I’m more than glad to get out of my usual tasks and into “unofficial” jobs to help someone out. But doing unofficial jobs has its downsides—especially if you have a hard time setting boundaries or saying “no” to people. In this episode, I discuss the three buckets you spend your time on at work: your official job, unofficial job, and distractions. I explain how taking on unofficial jobs can be helpful for you and your career and describe how they can hold you back if done incorrectly. I also reveal one of the key causes of overwhelm at work and underscore how consciously keeping track of how you spend your time can free up your calendar. “There are three buckets: your official job, unofficial job, and the distractions from the things you’re supposed to do—separating those things is an art.” - Mark J. Silverman This week on The Rising Leader Podcast:●     Why being a “Happy Helper” is both a positive and a negative thing for me●     Thinking about your official job in the company●     Considering your unofficial job and how you go above and beyond●     Why you might be overwhelmed at the workplace●     Tracking how you spend your time at work Grab Your Advanced Copy of The Rising Leader Handbook Do you find yourself rising through the ranks of your company so fast that you wish you had a manual to becoming an effective leader? Playing the Bigger Game with Dr. Jeff Spencer

Dr. Jeff Spencer is a speaker and a coach to Tiger Woods, Richard Branson, Dave Asprey, and over 40 Olympic, World, National, and Tour de France gold medalists. He has spent over 300,000 hours helping established founders, visionaries, and creatives perform at their full potential at any time, place, and circumstance. Drawing from his experience as an Olympic cyclist, author, hot glass artist, sports scientist, doctor, husband, and father, Jeff has helped some of the most accomplished individuals, teams, and organizations of our time become iconic brands. He is also the author of Turn It Up!: How to Perform at Your Highest Level for a Lifetime. Jeff joins me today to discuss playing the bigger game of life and making an impact on humanity. He explains the difference between the “survivor” and “seeker” minds and how our fear-based survival instincts keep us in a life of mediocrity. He details what living a life of grasping entails and outlines how being in constant hyperfocus can keep us from bigger, better, and faster ways to achieve success. Jeff also describes what “receivership” is and highlights how distinguishing yourself as a person requires openness to insights and revelations and taking time to pause and reflect. “Play the bigger game. Pace yourself and, over time, you’ll get a huge runway to amass a lifetime of experiences. Business and Non Business Conversations to Build Relationship

As the leader of an organization, communication is almost your entire job: how you show up, what you say in a situation, how much you communicate, and when you communicate are crucial factors to keep in mind as a leader. The better you understand the art of communication, the better leader you’re going to be. But for many of us, when we think about communicating at the workplace, we mostly think about business communication—work agreements, products, who’s responsible for what, and key performance indicators. Non-business communication at the workplace can be more challenging, and it’s the kind that makes or breaks the relationships needed to be successful. In this episode, I discuss business and non-business conversations and relationship-building. I explain how non-business conversations create resentment when done poorly. I describe how the way we react to anything as adults is deeply rooted in our childhood. I also discuss why you need to trust your gut and share ideas on approaching someone when you feel like you have offended them—or have been offended by them.“Non-business communications are harder because they’re the ones that make or break relationships, and everything that we do is relationships.” - Mark J. Pearson Spector and the New Leadership Reality

I’ve recently been watching the legal drama series Suits on Netflix—to say that I’m totally into it is probably an understatement. Suits is about a high-powered law firm in New York City, where people work themselves to the floor, balls to the wall, and compete until they’ve got nothing left. The associates and new lawyers are treated like garbage and everybody’s overworked—but in crisp, snazzy suits. But while Suits may be an exciting drama series (at least, for me), it makes one wonder: does the carrot-and-sticks management approach still work in today’s job market? What are the best ways to make employees improve their performance at work while retaining them? In this episode, I discuss the challenges of finding, attracting, and retaining the right talent in the current job market. I explain why employee engagement and happiness can no longer be a one-size-fits-all approach to employee retention. I also discuss driving employee loyalty, reveal the secret to pushing an employee’s performance without driving them out the door, and underscore how leadership is a skill you can hone and develop. “It takes a ton of work, attention, conversations, and getting to know people. Your leadership skills are going to be your competitive edge in hiring and retention—spending time on that is the thing to do.” - Mark J. Silverman This week on The Rising Leader Podcast: ●     Hiring and retention in today’s job market●     How remote working has impacted employee attraction and retention●     Looking at employees and their individual needs●     Why the carrots-and-sticks approach doesn’t work anymore●     Leadership skills and their impact on employee retention Grab Your Advanced Copy of The Rising Leader Handbook Do you find yourself rising through the ranks of your company so fast that you wish you had a manual to becoming an effective leader?
