Give Success The Time it Needs

In today's episode, I reflect on my journey from being a sales guy to a successful coach. I share how I started with no resume and faced rejection from every company in Silicon Valley due to my lack of experience. However, I persevered and eventually landed a position at NetApp, one of the fastest-growing companies in Silicon Valley. From there, I worked for other renowned tech companies, building an impressive resume in tech sales. I draw parallels between my sales career and my coaching business, emphasizing the importance of time and hard work in building a credible reputation. I also recount my early days as a waiter at the Four Seasons, where I initially felt terrified and out of my depth. However, with time and dedication, I became a trainer, helping new employees navigate the high-class environment. I encourage listeners to give themselves time to grow and learn, especially when transitioning to new roles or industries. By being patient, earnest, and believing in oneself, one can eventually become an expert in their field. I share my realization of the hard work I put in to reach where I am today and encourage those going through challenging times to keep pushing forward and building their success. "You can't be perfect, and you can't be great from the first minute." ~Mark Silverman This Week on Rising Leader:·     Building a successful career or business takes time and work.·     The importance of sticking around and getting better at what you do.·     Why it's important to let go of old habits and embrace new challenges.·     Why it's unrealistic to expect immediate perfection or greatness in a new role or industry.·     The importance of believing in yourself and having confidence in your abilities.·     Time is a key factor in achieving expertise and becoming a top performer in your field.·     Hard work and going through challenging times are necessary to earn success.·     How to keep moving forward and build your book of business.·      Grab Your Advanced Copy of The Rising Leader Handbook Do you find yourself rising through the ranks of your company so fast that you wish you had a manual to becoming an effective leader? Embracing Enoughness: Finding Wholeness Beyond Achievement

In this week's episode, I had the privilege of diving deep into the topic of self-acceptance and overcoming the never-ending pursuit of achievement with the incredible Dr. Mandy Lehto. We explored the journey of an overachiever, the struggles of not feeling enough, and the transformative power of self-compassion. Dr. Lehto shared her personal experiences and insights, shedding light on the importance of pausing to self-regulate, accepting our perceived flaws, and finding joy outside of achievement. It was a profound conversation that reminded me of the power of embracing our humanity and finding wholeness beyond the confines of success.Dr. Mandy Leto is a renowned executive coach and global leadership development expert with over 15 years of experience working with senior executives at top organizations. She has been featured in Forbes, Fast Company, and Psychology Today and hosts the highly-ranked Enough podcast. Dr. Mandy's journey from being an overachiever to finding self-acceptance and purpose has shaped her unique approach to leadership development. With her deep understanding of the challenges high achievers face, she brings a compassionate and transformative perspective to her work, helping individuals navigate the complexities of leadership and find fulfillment beyond external achievements."The most challenging thing you may ever do is to accept parts of yourself that you feel are unacceptable and unlovable." - Dr. Mandy LetoThis Week on Rising Leader:·     Overachievers often struggle with feelings of not being enough, which can lead to a constant pursuit of achievement and validation.·     The pursuit of achievement can be exhausting and ultimately unfulfilling, as the bar for success keeps rising and the dopamine hit from accomplishments diminishes over time.·     Self-compassion is a powerful tool for transforming self-judgment into self-acceptance. It involves being curious about our feelings, acknowledging them, and finding ways to make ourselves feel better.·     Accepting parts of ourselves that we feel are unacceptable and unlovable can be challenging but is a necessary step towards self-acceptance and growth.·     Pausing to self-regulate when triggered is a superpower. Taking a moment to breathe, gather thoughts, and respond rather than react can lead to more effective and mindful actions.·     It's important to use difficulties as opportunities for growth and learning. Instead of avoiding or resisting challenges, embracing them can lead to personal development and resilience.·     Building emotional capacity is crucial for navigating self-judgment and criticism. Developing the ability to doubt our own thinking and be present with our emotions can lead to greater self-awareness and self-compassion.·     The journey towards self-acceptance and enoughness is ongoing and requires patience, experimentation, and a willingness to embrace imperfection. It's about finding joy and fulfillment outside of achievement and recognizing the value of our authentic selves. Resources Mentioned:Rising Leader Handbook (to be published in January 2024) - mentioned as a resource by visiting the website www.markjsilverman.com and clicking the red button to get an advanced copy of the Executive Summary.Only Tens - mentioned as a free copy available on the website www.markjsilverman.com.The Enough podcast - mentioned as Dr. Mandy Leto's podcast, frequently ranked in the top 100 podcasts."Spirituality is the Damnedest Thing" by Jed McKenna - mentioned as a book that Mandy Leto was reading during her journey. The Handbook for Hard Times - mentioned as a book by Gelong Thubten, a monk, that Mandy Leto found helpful.Dr. Anna Lemke - mentioned as a Stanford professor of psychiatry and an expert on dopamine.Michael Caine - mentioned as an actor who shared a profound insight in a YouTube video about using difficulties.Emotional capacity - mentioned as a concept that Mandy Leto is working on to build resilience and navigate emotions.Use the difficulty - mentioned as a concept shared by Michael Caine to embrace and learn from challenging situations.Connect with Dr. Mandy Lehto: LinkedIn Instagram Enough – The Podcast Website X Grab Your Advanced Copy of The Rising Leader Handbook[1]  Do you find yourself rising through the ranks of your company so fast that you wish you had a manual to becoming an effective leader? Giving Your Way to Success

Sometime around the 1920s or 1930s, Katherine Hepburn and her parents were lining up to go to the circus. In front of them was a family, and when the father didn’t have enough money to buy his family’s tickets, Katherine’s dad gave him $20. Because that $20 was the money they were going to use to buy their own tickets, Katherine and her parents had to go home—but, on the drive home, they were joyful. Making that family happy gave Katherine and her parents much more than they could get from the circus. This story—about giving and the joy that comes from it—inspires me to think about how a mindset of service and giving value has helped me become successful. In today’s episode, I recount a story from Katherine Hepburn’s childhood and discuss the significance of approaching interactions with a mindset of service, generosity, and providing value. I also underscore the importance of setting healthy boundaries and ensuring your well-being. “In your next meeting—the next time you walk into a room full of people—change your attitude and think about how you can give, be of service, and provide value. Watch it change your career.” - Mark J. Stop Overcomplicating Leadership

I recently read a review of the Rising Leader Podcast and it made me chuckle. The review explained that, although the podcast’s interview episodes are great, the solo episodes tend to be repetitive. And that’s understandable—I do repeat some of the same themes like a broken record, but for good reason. I always talk about leadership, and one reason for this is that most people tend to overcomplicate it. While I believe leadership isn’t easy—it’s really, really hard, to be honest—it’s actually fairly simple. In this episode, I discuss why leadership—although it’s hard—is simple. I discuss my recent interview with healthcare industry executive, Geffrey Roche, and explain how books and content on online platforms such as LinkedIn overcomplicate leadership. I also outline the components of great leadership and underscore why doing internal work—through staying grounded and reducing stress—is a critical part of being a leader. “Don't overcomplicate leadership. Have the conversations you need to have. Be as honest as you can in those conversations. If you make a mistake, admit it—fix it, right? Make amends.” - Mark J. Silverman This week on The Rising Leader Podcast: ●     Why I never wanted to call myself a “leadership coach”●     How leadership becomes an intimidating job●     Solid relationships, honest conversations, listening, and other foundations of leadership●     Lowering your allostatic load, staying grounded, and doing the internal work as a leader Resources Mentioned: ●     Book: Alisa Cohn: From Start-Up to Grown-Up: Grow Your Leadership to Grow Your Business Grab Your Advanced Copy of The Rising Leader Handbook Do you find yourself rising through the ranks of your company so fast that you wish you had a manual to becoming an effective leader? How Well Do You Fail?

You do your best pitching—but you lose a sale. You attempt to communicate your ideas well—but you get shot down in the boardroom. How do you react when you fail? Do you sulk, lick your wounds, or get resentful? Try to find excuses? Or do you acknowledge the feeling of disappointment and try to come back better? Handling disappointment and loss can be as challenging as the tasks that caused them, but our resiliency and capacity to bounce back from failures can be built. In this episode, I discuss failing and failing gracefully. I share the story of Christopher Troy and explore how, when we’re met with failure, cheering for our team’s success can benefit us. I describe how I usually react to my own failures. I also share Beth Perlman’s wisdom on not taking failures personally and the value of treating life as an experiment. “Everything is in the lab. Nothing is a failure.
