The Rising Leader
Mark J. Silverman
THERE ARE FEW NATURAL-BORN LEADERS
Leadership is a learned skill and learning is never-ending. “What got you here won’t get you where you want to go,” is an uncomfortable truth Fast Rising High Achievers run into at every level of their career. In fact, what got you here won’t even help you do your new job effectively.
Every step up the ladder requires a new level of leadership and “people skills.” Because “people” are now your job.
This podcast is here to help you master skills on four fronts on your way to the senior leadership team.
LEADING UP – You are now a trusted advisor. That means you are a sounding board, speak truth to power, and help your CEO get their job done, all while getting your job done.
LEADING ACROSS – You are peers are the power players in the organization. This is the team you are on. Your job is to lead from within that team while being a part of it. You are now a student of the Art of Co-opetition.
LEADING YOUR TEAM – You’ve spent a career honing your leadership skills and now have an even less direct impact on how things get done. Your success will only come from your team’s success.
LEADING YOURSELF – Relentless pressure, ambition, burnout, sleepless nights, and resentments, are the price you may be paying for your lofty position. Mastering your emotions, perspective, health, and relationships are essential to make this fun and sustainable.
The conversations, resources, and subject matter experts we will have is designed to help you “level up” in all four of these focus areas. Each week we will tackle a topic that will move you forward in your relationships with your boss, your peers, your team, and yourself. You'll be armed with tools and insights you will use throughout your career and in your personal life.

Your Official Job and Your Unofficial Job
Are you the go-to person for everybody at your workplace? Do people come to you all day, every day, to ask for help in exchange for that tasty dopamine hit from getting praised for a job well done? If yes, then you might be someone like me. As someone with a “Happy Helper” personality type, I’m more than glad to get out of my usual tasks and into “unofficial” jobs to help someone out. But doing unofficial jobs has its downsides—especially if you have a hard time setting boundaries or saying “no” to people. In this episode, I discuss the three buckets you spend your time on at work: your official job, unofficial job, and distractions. I explain how taking on unofficial jobs can be helpful for you and your career and describe how they can hold you back if done incorrectly. I also reveal one of the key causes of overwhelm at work and underscore how consciously keeping track of how you spend your time can free up your calendar. “There are three buckets: your official job, unofficial job, and the distractions from the things you’re supposed to do—separating those things is an art.” - Mark J. Silverman This week on The Rising Leader Podcast:● Why being a “Happy Helper” is both a positive and a negative thing for me● Thinking about your official job in the company● Considering your unofficial job and how you go above and beyond● Why you might be overwhelmed at the workplace● Tracking how you spend your time at work Grab Your Advanced Copy of The Rising Leader Handbook Do you find yourself rising through the ranks of your company so fast that you wish you had a manual to becoming an effective leader? Playing the Bigger Game with Dr. Jeff Spencer
Dr. Jeff Spencer is a speaker and a coach to Tiger Woods, Richard Branson, Dave Asprey, and over 40 Olympic, World, National, and Tour de France gold medalists. He has spent over 300,000 hours helping established founders, visionaries, and creatives perform at their full potential at any time, place, and circumstance. Drawing from his experience as an Olympic cyclist, author, hot glass artist, sports scientist, doctor, husband, and father, Jeff has helped some of the most accomplished individuals, teams, and organizations of our time become iconic brands. He is also the author of Turn It Up!: How to Perform at Your Highest Level for a Lifetime. Jeff joins me today to discuss playing the bigger game of life and making an impact on humanity. He explains the difference between the “survivor” and “seeker” minds and how our fear-based survival instincts keep us in a life of mediocrity. He details what living a life of grasping entails and outlines how being in constant hyperfocus can keep us from bigger, better, and faster ways to achieve success. Jeff also describes what “receivership” is and highlights how distinguishing yourself as a person requires openness to insights and revelations and taking time to pause and reflect. “Play the bigger game. Pace yourself and, over time, you’ll get a huge runway to amass a lifetime of experiences. The pauses and recreation are where we creatively open ourselves to receiving better ideas.” - Dr. Jeff Spencer This week on The Rising Leader Podcast:● Our human instinct to seek and create an impact on the world● “Restless Soul Syndrome” and the daily battle we wage with ourselves● The survivor instinct versus the seeker instinct● Trying to be successful from a place of survival● Different ways to look at success● How stress and strain accumulate and impact our health and well-being later in life● Developing confidence and certainty within ourselves● Avoiding the “Hustler’s Hooks”● What it means to stand in “receivership”● How to access your next great, big idea to contribute to humanity● Why taking time for reflection is essential to receiving revelations and insights● Having callings versus goals● How the Rising Leader Program and Mastering Midlife Podcast showed up in my life● The survivor mind and its relationship to imposter syndrome● Honoring your life’s potential and why no one is insignificant in this world Resources Mentioned:● Dr. Jeff Spencer on James Whitaker’s Win the Day Podcast● Dr. Jeff Spencer with Jim Kwik Connect with Dr. Jeff Spencer:● Dr. Jeff Spencer Website● Dr. Jeff Spencer on LinkedIn● Dr. Jeff Spencer on YouTube● Dr. Jeff Spencer on Facebook● Dr. Jeff Spencer on Twitter● Book: Turn It Up!: How to Perform at Your Highest Level for a Lifetime Grab Your Advanced Copy of The Rising Leader Handbook Do you find yourself rising through the ranks of your company so fast that you wish you had a manual to becoming an effective leader? Business and Non Business Conversations to Build Relationship
As the leader of an organization, communication is almost your entire job: how you show up, what you say in a situation, how much you communicate, and when you communicate are crucial factors to keep in mind as a leader. The better you understand the art of communication, the better leader you’re going to be. But for many of us, when we think about communicating at the workplace, we mostly think about business communication—work agreements, products, who’s responsible for what, and key performance indicators. Non-business communication at the workplace can be more challenging, and it’s the kind that makes or breaks the relationships needed to be successful. In this episode, I discuss business and non-business conversations and relationship-building. I explain how non-business conversations create resentment when done poorly. I describe how the way we react to anything as adults is deeply rooted in our childhood. I also discuss why you need to trust your gut and share ideas on approaching someone when you feel like you have offended them—or have been offended by them.“Non-business communications are harder because they’re the ones that make or break relationships, and everything that we do is relationships.” - Mark J. Pearson Spector and the New Leadership Reality
I’ve recently been watching the legal drama series Suits on Netflix—to say that I’m totally into it is probably an understatement. Suits is about a high-powered law firm in New York City, where people work themselves to the floor, balls to the wall, and compete until they’ve got nothing left. The associates and new lawyers are treated like garbage and everybody’s overworked—but in crisp, snazzy suits. But while Suits may be an exciting drama series (at least, for me), it makes one wonder: does the carrot-and-sticks management approach still work in today’s job market? What are the best ways to make employees improve their performance at work while retaining them? In this episode, I discuss the challenges of finding, attracting, and retaining the right talent in the current job market. I explain why employee engagement and happiness can no longer be a one-size-fits-all approach to employee retention. I also discuss driving employee loyalty, reveal the secret to pushing an employee’s performance without driving them out the door, and underscore how leadership is a skill you can hone and develop. “It takes a ton of work, attention, conversations, and getting to know people. Your leadership skills are going to be your competitive edge in hiring and retention—spending time on that is the thing to do.” - Mark J. Silverman This week on The Rising Leader Podcast: ● Hiring and retention in today’s job market● How remote working has impacted employee attraction and retention● Looking at employees and their individual needs● Why the carrots-and-sticks approach doesn’t work anymore● Leadership skills and their impact on employee retention Grab Your Advanced Copy of The Rising Leader Handbook Do you find yourself rising through the ranks of your company so fast that you wish you had a manual to becoming an effective leader? Let’s say, on a Monday morning, while scrolling through Instagram, you see a post. It’s your group of friends going golfing over the weekend—and you’re literally out of the picture because you weren’t invited. How would you respond to that? Would you turn it on yourself and decide you’re not likable enough and start sulking about it or would you let your anger go someplace else and trash other people? How do you handle a hurt like that? Now, let’s take this to a business setting. If you were working in a senior leadership team, how would you handle communication when people start feeling slighted? In this episode, I discuss handling conversations to clear the air or mend a slight. I explain how communication can make or break relationships in any setting. Leading You-Self Mastery, The Key to Freedom
What do Leonardo da Vinci, Jesus, and the Buddha have in common? They all highlight the power of self-mastery, self-discipline, and self-control. I find that their wisdom on self-mastery speaks to me, especially as someone who has severe ADHD. And whenever I do the Mastering Overwhelm workshops, I pepper their axioms throughout the entire session to remind everyone, including myself, about the value of self-mastery. There’s simply no higher good than the discipline of oneself. Discipline is freedom. In this episode, I share quotes from da Vinci, Jesus, and the Buddha about self-mastery and freedom. I explain why leading up, leading an organization, and leading a team all start with leading yourself. I also reveal what the worst self-esteem killer is and offer advice on building self-discipline. “There’s no higher good than the discipline of yourself—discipline is freedom.” - Mark Silverman This week on The Rising Leader Podcast: ● A little test for everyone● Leonardo da Vinci on mastery● The Buddha on conquering oneself● Jesus on ruling the spirit● Why leading a team starts with leading yourself● Building self-discipline and why it’s freedom Our Favorite Self-Mastery Quotes: ● “The really important kind of freedom involves attention and awareness and discipline—and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them over and over in a myriad of petty, unsexy ways every day.” - David Foster Wallace● “They who rule their own spirit have won a greater victory than the taking of a city.” - Jesus● “One can have no smaller or greater mastery than the mastery over oneself.” - Leonardo da Vinci.● “One who conquers oneself is greater than another who conquers a thousand men on the battlefield.” - Buddha● “True freedom is the ability to place one’s attention where they want to, when they want to, and for how long they want to.” - Unknown Grab Your FREE Copy: Only 10s Book Are you a busy executive or organizational leader? People-Centered Leadership with Tom Mendoza
Tom Mendoza is the former President and Vice Chair of NetApp, a hybrid cloud data service and data management company that has ranked in the Fortune 500 list since 2012. After 25 impressive years of service at NetApp, Tom retired from the company to share his wealth of knowledge and experience by guest lecturing on the power of corporate culture to benefit the younger business generation. He also currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors for mParticle, Varonis, and VAST Data. Tom holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame and is an alumnus of Stanford University's Executive Business Program.Tom joins me today to discuss why he attributes his career’s success to his curiosity and interest in people. He shares why he doesn’t like the word “networking” and why self-awareness is essential to every leader in any organization. He describes the leadership skills he lacked and what he did to change and improve them. Tom also highlights why a people-centric culture is more powerful than a data-centric one and explains why having children later in life has changed Tom’s perspective on work, life, and career.“Know their hopes, dreams, and aspirations; if you know those things about somebody, they know you care—and people don’t care what you know unless they know that you care.” - Tom MendozaThis week on The Rising Leader Podcast:Tom’s interest in people and how he’s used that for successCaring about and getting to know people in high-pressure situationsFinding the time to build a connection with someoneStaying in contact with people and following their stories and successDeciding who your trusted advisors areNavigating disagreements and what to do after being shot down in a group meetingThe signs that someone will be successful in your teamKnowing when to coach and when to part waysShowing someone the impact they make on othersResources Mentioned:Tom Mendoza speaks at West Point on Leadership, Part IPart II: Tom Mendoza speaks at West Point on LeadershipTom Mendoza Presents: A Conversation with Dan WarmenhovenBook: How to Castrate a Bull: Unexpected Lessons on Risk, Growth, and Success in Business by Dave HitzConnect with Tom Mendoza:Tom Mendoza on TwitterTom Mendoza on ForbesTom Mendoza on LinkedInGrab Your FREE Copy: Only 10s BookAre you a busy executive or organizational leader?
