Belonging is a gnarly topic to raise with anyone in burnout, who is caught between wanting to be seen as a high-performer, and guiltily slinking away, feeling like a failure. Belonging is widely misunderstood. We think it's conferred upon us by others. That's a limited view, because if we fail to offer ourselves belonging, we can't receive it when it's offered by others.The more harshly we judge ourselves, the less belonging we feel inside, and the more we behave like outsiders to 'prove' we don't belong. A vicious cycle.Belonging is 'inclusion safety' - the first stage of psychological safety. It's a basic human need.
