Tips on Creating Stories and Speaking (Part One) with Film Maker Mickey Lemle – 100

I believe that public speaking can only be truly effective in moving an audience if the speaker views themselves first and foremost as a storyteller. In this way public speaking is no different to other mediums, like writing, comedy and filmmaking, where stories are also used to affect an audience. That is why I like to bring guests from those other arenas on to the show to give you ideas for making your own message more powerful. That is why I am chuffed to bits that for this 100th episode I have Producer/Director Mickey Lemle as my guest. Mickey Lemle has been making feature films, television series and documentary specials since 1971. His film and television works have been shown theatrically, on television and at film festivals around the world. He has covered such diverse topics as media manipulation, the first astronauts to land on the moon and two feature length documentaries about the Dalai Lama. In addition to his award-winning films he was also a personal friend and student of Joseph Campbell, the architect of modern storytelling. Across these two episodes we cover a wide range of topics all of which I hope will give you food for thought about yourself, your life and your public speaking. Mickey takes us all over the globe, into our inner world and even into space with the stories that he shares, and I hope that you love hearing them as much as I did. What you’ll discover: How and Why Mickey got into documentary film making The two traits you need for successful film making Why Mickey thinks a lot of Hollywood movies are stupid. What drives the project choices Mickey makes. How documentaries get funded and made. Why it’s so important to find stories that reflect internal transformation. How you show internal transformation in a story. The measure Mickey uses personally to judge the success of his films. Why we should be wary of the way that information is presented to us. The secret to a long life The secret to the end of suffering. How meditation can help you create a better life. The lessons that Mickey learnt directly from Joseph Campbell the creator of ‘The Hero’s Journey’ How Mickey got his Holiness the Dalai Lama to agree to be in a documentary. The story creation process for documentaries and the similarities with creating a presentation story. How Mickey uses the Hero’s Journey in his work How speaking fits into Mickey’s work How Mickey uses storytelling in his speaking Mickey’s top tips for speakers for using stories and building a narrative All things Mickey Lemle: http://www.lemlepictures.com Other Resources* Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell https://www.standoutpitch.com https://www.saraharcher.co.uk https://www.thespeakingclub.com/masterclass Thanks for listening! To gain this knowledge there are two skills we need to master, and in this episode, I’ll be sharing what they are and what could stop you or get in your way of leveraging their power in your communication.  Enjoy! What we’re going to cover: The two critical skills every effective communicator needs to master Why these skills are important The human psychology traps that sabotage our success What the ‘Backfire effect’ is and how we can combat it. How to Use and Interpret Non-Verbals to Get What You Want with Shelly O’Donovan – 097

Shelly O’Donovan, CEO of the Authentic Influence Group is back to give us more insight and tips about non-verbal communication. She is an expert in body-language and facial expressions after switching from over 20 years in the public policy arena. She has worked with corporations to shape their strategy and building bridges between the commercial interests of organizations and government affairs. During her time working in government relations, public policy, lobbying, grassroots advocacy, legislative and regulatory processes, and policy maker engagement she has seen the gamut of body language dos and don’ts. It was in this arena she noticed some of the brightest people weren’t having the impact they deserved, yet others with half the substance and potential were having great success. After studying the arts of body language, personality types and lie detection, not only did Shelly see her own status and influence increase, but she was able to discern why others were successful or not. Today she speaks, coaches and trains on increasing the impact of your body language for speaking, confidence, gravitas, and sales, and we are lucky enough to have her on the show again sharing what she knows to increase our success in these areas. What you’ll learn How we make our non-verbals match our message How to decode the face of someone you’re speaking to What micro-expressions you should be looking out for when you pitch and why How to sell anything to anyone using body language The body language ticks of Donald Trump What non-verbal branding is and why you should care about it The non-verbal brand of James Corden and what it says about him Why you should ask for feedback after you speak How you can tell if someone is lying Why the story of Pinocchio’s nose has some foundations in truth How Shelly uses body language in her talks to connect and engage Why you should be open and flexible as a speaker All things Shelly O’Donovan: http://www.illuminatethemessage.com Twitter / Linked In: @shellyodonovan Success is Yours by Shelly O’Donovan (and others) Episode 039 - Shelly’s First Interview on The Speaking Club   Other Resources* Total Leadership by Stewart D. Build Your Niche, Not Your Brand! – 094

In business today, it’s a fairly established principle that you have to start small in order to grow big...that you have to find a ‘niche’. But that rule doesn’t just apply to business, it applies to anything you want to build a business or movement from. Whether you’re a speaker, author, expert, inventor or charity founder if you don’t find a way to be different, you’ll get lost in the crowd. In this show I want to share about what a niche is, and how you can create one. I often talk about helping you stand out and whilst storytelling and humour will certainly separate you from the crowd, your message needs to do the same. I’m hoping this episode gives you more food for thought and another angle to come at this from. Enjoy! What we’re going to cover: The two traps we can fall into as speakers and business owners. Why being ‘better’ is bad. Why you should actively try to alienate people with your message. How going for a thin slice could end up giving you a bigger piece of the pie Why articulating the problem best makes you a winner. The different types of ways you can niche down.
