Every, and I Mean EVERY Conversation Can Help You Grow - Holding the “Assertive Frame”

Tony explains how every conversation and interaction with the right tools can be for your good. He discusses the importance of effective communication and understanding personal biases. Drawing an analogy from his experience with orange-tinted running sunglasses Tony received from an ultra marathon, he emphasized how our biases, much like the sunglasses, subtly color our perspectives. He introduced the four communication pillars as tools to understand others better and enhance conversations. These pillars include giving the benefit of the doubt, resisting the urge to tell somebody they’re wrong, seeking first to understand, staying engaged, and actively listening. Tony also touched on the challenges people face when seeking understanding, especially from leaders or advisors who might not genuinely listen to individual concerns. He stressed the importance of curiosity, open-mindedness, and ways for individuals to communicate their needs and feelings, “holding the assertive frame.” He shared his thoughts on healthy “assertive and nurturing” replacements for “masculine and feminine” concerning introducing polarity in relationships. Tony then explores the pitfalls of "playing the victim" and avoiding discomfort in conversations. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing genuine connection over ego and fear and highlighted the dangers of seeking validation through listing past good deeds. Recognizing our emotional responses as opportunities for self-growth and reflection was also discussed. Using practical examples, Tony illustrated how confronting personal biases and embracing vulnerability can foster deeper connections and mutual understanding. Ultimately, the podcast underscored the need for individuals to consistently practice effective communication, hold an assertive frame, and seek growth and authenticity in their interactions. And you can sign up for Mackie Overbay and Tony’s new podcast, “The Mind, The Mirror & Me,” at https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-mind-the-mirror-me/id1701226687To learn more about their project or make an investment, visit http://wefunder.com/toosoon and be a part of the change in independent filmmaking. You're Not Broken, You're Human: Exploring Rising Depression Rates w/Nate Christensen, APCC

In this candid episode of 'The Virtual Couch,' host Tony Overbay, LMFT, is joined by his colleague, Nate Christensen, APCC. Together, they dissect the trend highlighted in a recent article titled "U.S. Depression Rates Reach New Highs" https://news.gallup.com/poll/505745/depression-rates-reach-new-highs.aspx while discussing their theories and experiences dealing with mental health in their therapy practices. Tony starts by explaining his theory that the brain, constantly analyzing for threats, signals us through anxiety and depression that it's time to address negative aspects of our lives. Both Tony and Nate emphasize that these signals, as tough as they are, are not enemies but signs that push us toward positive changes. The discussion then navigates through various types of depression, the prevalent causes, and contributing factors, shedding light on the increased depression rates despite an uptick in societal mental health awareness. Nate shares his experience of dealing with depression and anxiety, leading to an in-depth discussion about different therapy approaches, such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Finally, they explore the benefits of medication and newer therapy forms, like psychedelic-assisted therapy. All throughout, the underlying message is clear: If you're struggling, seek help. You're not broken, you're human, and this journey is discovery and transformation. To learn more about Tony's upcoming re-release of the Magnetic Marriage course, his Pathback Recovery course, and more, sign up for his newsletter through the link at https://linktr.ee/virtualcouchTo learn more about Jeff Dickamore and Aurora Florence's crow-funded movie "Too Soon" from episode 386, visit http://wefunder.com/toosoon and be a part of the change in independent filmmaking. Building Bridges, Not Walls: Exploring the Four Pillars of Connected Conversations

Tony Overbay, LMFT, delves into his Four Pillars of a Connected Conversation and introduces the acronym BASE to help listeners better remember the pillars during conversations. He also shares a new "pre-pillar" or becoming more grounded before entering the 4 pillar framework. The "pre-pillar" is based on Marshall Rosenberg's Nonviolent Communication, emphasizing the need to discern concrete observations from subjective judgments. The BASE acronym is Benefit of the Doubt, Accept Their Perspective, Seek First to Understand, and Embrace the Conversation. These foundational pillars, when applied, can revolutionize how we communicate, fostering deeper connections and healthier relationships. Tony concludes the episode by addressing the challenge of observing ineffective communication in others and providing insights on navigating these situations. Tune in and transform the way you converse and connect. To learn more about Tony's upcoming re-release of the Magnetic Marriage course, sign up for his newsletter through the link at https://linktr.ee/virtualcouchInside ACT for Anxiety Disorder Course is Open!
