Using Positive Psychology as a Tool in Eating Disorder Recovery, with Elle Mace
Today, I’m talking to Elle Mace – Coach & Mentor, Master Practitioner in Eating disorders, obesity and body dysmorphia; Nutrition and weight management therapist as well as a life and positive psychology coach. Previously, Elle has worked as a personal trainer and aerobics instructor, having a passion for health and fitness.
Elle is a returning guest to the Eating Disorder Therapist Podcast and if you’d like to hear about her recovery story, you can listen to her previous episode – link is in the show notes.
In the past, Elle struggled with an unhealthy relationship with food and her body, this starting at the tender age of ten years old, when she received unwanted comments about her body. Clearly, this had a huge impact on Elle’s body image and self-esteem, and she began to starve herself, and then understandably fell into binge eating. Then, over several years, she fell into destructive eating disorder cycles impacting her physical and mental wellbeing.
Fast forward a few years, and Elle decided that ‘enough was enough’. She had to free herself from the food demons and fall back in love with her body and with herself. It wasn’t an easy journey. It took much strength, determination and self-care – and bravely moving away from the seductions of dieting.
I’m pleased to say that today, Elle is in a very different place. She now uses her experience, qualifications and knowledge to help others heal their relationship with food, their bodies and ultimately themselves. She brings much passion and enthusiasm in her work in supporting others, after walking this path herself and knowing that real recovery is possible.
In this episode, Elle talks about the use of positive psychology as a tool in eating disorder recovery. She talks affirmations, toxic positivity, body image, the conscious versus the unconscious mind and more. This is an episode to inspire hope and motivation on your healing journey and it will equip you with some practical tools to help you on the way. I hope that you enjoy the conversation.

Addressing Recovery Fears, Letting Go of Over-Control and Leaning into Surrender - Eating Disorder Recovery
A Bite Size episode.
This podcast is all about addressing fear.
Fears around your body changing, fears about how you might cope with unpredictable eating events, fear about what might happen if you don’t do a certain number of steps or weigh out your food.
When you have an eating disorder, you are often trying to find a sense of control. Life feels unpredictable, scary and overwhelming. Control of your body or portions or macros or grams give a feeling of safety and certainty – at least temporarily.
But fundamentally, this doesn't work. Life becomes rigid and anxiety ridden. You end up feeling more out of control than ever.
This episode explores letting go of over-control and leaning into the surrender of recovery. I hope that you find it helpful.

What Really Helped in Anorexia Nervosa Recovery and Calling out Diet Culture in Education with Florence Taglight
Today I’m talking to Florence Taglight. Florence is a primary school teacher and mental health lead who has recovered from anorexia nervosa.
Florence has a unique perspective as she has been to treatment, in both the U.K and the U.S.A. Interestingly, the differences in treatment approach, aspects of culture and education shocked her and has led her to commit to making a difference in this field. Advocating for teacher and school eating disorders training is high on Florence’s to do list and she offers training sessions in schools to help adults learn about early signs and interventions.
Florence has three dogs who are her world and keep her grounded. She loves nothing more than drinking a coffee surrounded by her furry friends whilst battling diet-culture.
In the episode today, we’re going to explore Florence’s recovery journey – understanding her unique perspective of experiencing UK and USA treatment approaches in eating disorder recovery. And to acknowledge aspects of each approach which have helped/are helping her to continue along the healing road today.
We’ll also delve into Florence’s education work in schools and understand how she is supporting adults to detect early signs of eating disorders and the guidance and support she is recommending in this work, based on her unique and valuable experiences.
Florence is clearly passionate about the work she does. I know that this conversation is going to inspire and offer hope in challenging diet culture to everyone.

7 Tips to Body Confidence, When You’re Dreading the Next Social Event
A Bite Size episode.
In this podcast, I explore what to do when you’re feeling anxious about socialising. Maybe you don’t know what to wear. You feel that nothing fits as you would like it to. You feel self-conscious that others will pass judgement or look at you. Maybe you’re on a recovery journey and your body has changed – you fear others noticing and feel under an intense spotlight.
Although it’s sorely tempting to stay indoors, decline the invitation and watch Netflix in the safety of your four walls, this probably isn’t the optimal thing for your mental well-being and it will likely exacerbate the anxieties even more.
So what to do? Here are 7 tips to increase body confidence, get out of your head and feel better. I hope that you find it helpful.

Research into Male Therapists’ Experience in the Therapy Room, with Male Clients with Disordered Eating, with Maria Guiñazu
Today I have a returning guest to the podcast and I’m talking to Maria Guiñazu, a psychologist trained in Argentina and a qualified psychotherapist in the UK. She is based in Brighton.
Maria’s approach intersects existential therapy and somatic psychology. She is passionate about looking at a wide variety of tools that might suit her clients towards growth, healing, transformation and embodied presence.
Maria’s work is focused on the relationship between body, emotions, thoughts and imagination. And for some clients, she uses creative writing, drawing or movement, as other tools to explore a world beyond verbal communication. Maria offers therapy in English and Spanish.
At the moment, Maria is in her third year of her doctorate in Psychotherapy and Counselling Psychology. Her doctorate research is looking at the lived experience of male therapists working with male clients with disordered eating.
In the podcast today, we do a deep dive into Maria’s research work exploring some male therapists’ experience of working with male clients with disordered eating. It’s a fascinating topic, where Maria talks about her inspiration for the work; how the male-experience of eating disorders can be very different from that of the female one; creating safe spaces for males to open-up about disordered eating without shame and embarrassment; body objectification, the influence of philosophical thought and more.
Maria is absolutely passionate about her research and I know that you will be inspired and intrigued by everything she has to share here. So much value in this episode. I hope that you enjoy the conversation.
