Multi Metal Mining in Wales And Other Global Assets With Jo Battershill
In this episode, we chat to Jo Battershill, MD, and CEO of Anglesey Mining - a UK mining listed company that is listed on the LSE (and soon to be AIM). It has interests in Wales, Sweden, and Canada. The main property is their Parys Mountain project in Wales. It hosts a significant polymetallic zinc, copper, lead, silver, and gold deposit. Jo has a mining geology background but has also worked in finance and has a well-rounded career and more recently worked in a non-executive capacity for a few mining entities. Jo tells us all about their historical Parys Mountain project in Wales. KEY TAKEAWAYS The mine on Anglesey was established in 1988, but when the zinc price plummeted development stalled. The most recent analysis shows that this is now primarily a copper asset. Between 40 and 45%. Zinc represents circa 35% of the deposit. With silver, lead, and gold making up the rest. The site can be mined using a very small footprint. The local community is immensely proud of the mine and their heritage and are supportive. They are planning to extract between 15,000 and 20,000 tonnes per year. Resources are sitting in 4 bands from just beneath the surface to a depth of about 600 metres. The Grangesberg iron ore site in Sweden is a strategic asset. What Sweden is doing with zero carbon steel production is amazing. In April, Anglesey Mining will be on AIM. BEST MOMENTS ‘The project never failed for technical reasons. It´s failed because of market timing. ´ ‘I think it’s actually harder to permit a new operation than it is to find one.’ ‘It’s really part of the heritage of the town and people are genuinely supportive.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Website: https://www.angleseymining.co.uk LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/anglesey-mining-plc Twitter: https://twitter.com/AngleseyMining VALUABLE RESOURCES Email: rob@mining-international.org Website: https://www.mining-international.org/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/MiningRobTyson Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theminingpodcast/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast/videos ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Mining Challenges That Many Will Find Surprising With Alan Clegg
In this episode, we chat with Alan Clegg, who has a wealth of experience in all aspects of the Metals & Minerals Value Chain from Exploration to operations and through to Mine Closure, including financing, project management, construction & execution. As a competent person for Independent Engineers & Technical Reporting Alan presents regularly at conferences. He is here today to talk about Key Elements of an energy and environment-focused economic future. This episode is packed full of information and key challenges the industry should be thinking about as we continue to move in 2022 and beyond. KEY TAKEAWAYS Many base metals will soon be in deficit, so their values will soar. Examples are provided in the podcast. There is a lot of liquidity, but environmental concerns mean that not enough of that cash is reaching the mining industry. At the same time, the world is desperate for the metals needed for green energy infrastructure. Demand for uranium is likely to boom. Calls for nuclear energy are growing. Africa is perfectly placed for this. Renewables will continue to grow, but people are now questioning how viable and green they really are. Africa has great potential for mining. But large swathes of it have been mortgaged to the Chinese. Investors with fewer ESG concerns than Western investors are moving fast and are picking up vital assets in Africa. African brownfield exploration is uncovering large deposits. Africa still has huge thermal coal reserves. They will use it to produce power and global demand means this is a growth area. Clean coal technology makes it far greener than most people realise. Some of the world´s most important mines are in countries with resource, political unrest, and war issues. Most Western infrastructure is 100+ years old and needs replacing. So, demand for iron ore should increase. BEST MOMENTS ‘There´s a lot of questions around renewables that one has to be awake to. ´ ‘Platinum and palladium are repositioning themselves very strongly as energy metals.’ ‘There´s a huge reset coming, in my view, and the mining and energy sector values will go ballistic.’ ‘Almost every base metal commodity will be in serious deficit by next year.’ EPISODE RESOURCES LinkedIn: https://za.linkedin.com/in/alan-m-clegg-pr-eng-00227a9 VALUABLE RESOURCES Email: rob@mining-international.org Website: https://www.mining-international.org/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/MiningRobTyson Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theminingpodcast/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast/videos ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Extracting Low-Cost High-Quality Heavy Rare Earths From Adsorption Clay Deposits With Tim Harrison
In this episode, we speak to Tim Harrison, MD of Ionic Rare Earths that is focused on developing its flagship Makuutu Rare Earths project in Uganda into a significant, low-cost, supplier of high-value critical and heavy rare earths. Tim has a chemical and metallurgy background with a track record across both mineral processing and hydrometallurgy. He has worked with a wide range of commodities and talks to us more about Ionic Rare Earths. Including providing a project update. KEY TAKEAWAYS The Makuutu Rare Earths project in Uganda is an ionic adsorption clay deposit. It is easier, faster, and cheaper to extract Rare Earth Elements (REEs) from clay than it is from hard rock ore. Adsorption clay deposits give you a different basket of metals. Heavy Rare Earth Elements are used across multiple sectors including zero-carbon, medical, military, and EVs. Without heavy rare earths, you cannot have the permanent magnet motors the electric vehicle and offshore wind industries need. Thirty-three percent of their production is magnetic rare earths. Ionic liquids technology is making separation far faster and easier. Ionic Rare Earths are also involved in developing technology that recycles spent magnets. Demand for rare earths will increase drastically in the next 10 years. Without magnet rare earths, net-zero goals cannot be achieved. BEST MOMENTS ‘Organic adsorption clay produces a different composition of rare earth elements. ´ ‘We've got 33% of our basket being neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, and terbium, which are the four key magnet rare earths.’ ‘We´ve had tremendous support from the Ugandan authorities.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Website: https://ionicre.com.au/ LinkedIn: https://au.linkedin.com/company/ionic-rare-earths-limited Twitter: https://twitter.com/ionic_re?lang=en Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/124924299561369/ Email: admin@ionicre.com.au VALUABLE RESOURCES Email: rob@mining-international.org Website: https://www.mining-international.org/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/MiningRobTyson Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theminingpodcast/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast/videos ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. How Sustainability And Digital Tools Are Reducing Production Costs With Ricus Grimbeek
In the episode, we chat to Ricus Grimbeek, CEO of Trevali Mining Corp. A global zinc producer operating three revenue-generating mines focused on delivering sustainable shareholder value through transformative technology and ESG practices. Their property portfolio is focused and located in established mining jurisdictions of Canada, Burkina Faso, and Namibia Ricus is a mine engineer by background with over 30 years of industry experience in South Africa, Australia, and Canada. He tells us how he is leading a team that is building the world’s most sustainable underground mining company. KEY TAKEAWAYS It is possible to guarantee the safety of people who work within mining or live in mined areas. If we don't aim for the stars we are never going to reach them. Challenging goals stretch us and improve the industry as a whole. It is possible to protect the environment, while mining. For example, one of their mines gets 30% of its power from solar. Mentoring and coaching are powerful tools everyone should be using. The difference between the two is discussed in the podcast. Trevali plans to expand its mine by 86%. Trevali has developed digital tools and a hybrid working approach that enables them to plan the work to the hour and drop production costs from $1 to 67cents. Planning and scheduling enable you to get the most out of digital tools and the data it produces. The mine life has already been extended to 12 years and with a JV they believe that can become 20 years. Their Caribou, Canada multi-metal mine is using rapid oxidative leeching to treat ore and tailings and turn them into metal. The initial results of oxidative leeching are good. The technique will result in the production of saleable gold. Putting tailings underground shrinks the mine´s footprint and reduces water usage. Creating a safe workspace where people can speak up and be themselves automatically creates an inclusive and diverse workforce. BEST MOMENTS ‘I took the role…to create the most sustainable mining company. I know that is bold. But if you don't aim for the stars you will never reach them. ´ ‘You can use AI to monitor high-risk areas and improve safety.’ ‘You can´t bolt sustainability onto your business. It has to be at the core of how you design.’ EPISODE RESOURCES LinkedIn Ricus Grimbeek: https://ca.linkedin.com/in/ricus-grimbeekWebsite: https://trevali.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/trevaliTwitter: https://twitter.com/trevaliFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/TrevaliMining VALUABLE RESOURCES Email: rob@mining-international.org Website: https://www.mining-international.org/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/MiningRobTyson Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theminingpodcast/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast/videos ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. How True Inclusivity is Benefiting the Mining Industry with Stacy Hope
In this episode, we chat with Dr. Stacy Hope, who is the MD of Women in Mining UK and a global advisor on subjects including ESG, Social Investing, Climate, gender Smart Cities, and Resilience. She has a background in Anthropology and talks to us about Women in Mining and their purpose and discusses some topics around ESG, social investing, and gender equality. KEY TAKEAWAYS Dr. Stacy is a strategic advisor for various multilateral agencies including the UN Group and The World Bank, and also works across the fields of agriculture and water. In many cases, mining really defines the communities in which it takes place, which makes it a potent force for social change. Mining companies are increasingly seeing the value of having women working within the industry. Being underrepresented within an industry creates challenges. In the episode, Stacey explains some of them and how this leads to a high drop-off rate. The progress paths within the industry still fit in better with the family responsibilities men tend to have than those that many women have. Internships are an excellent way to attract more women into the industry. Having women working at all levels of an organization in a range of roles changes the organizational norms. It opens everyone´s minds to the possibilities. The industry employing more women in jurisdictions where women are still treated as 2nd class citizens is proving to be a very powerful catalyst for social change. WIM100 is raising awareness of the possibilities for women in mining, across the world. Demonstrating the benefits of diversity in mining, while boosting the careers of nominees. BEST MOMENTS ‘We need to think of innovative ways to bring all genders, all ethnicities to the forefront.’ ‘Maybe mining needs to think a bit more about the skill set. About the talent as opposed to the education.’ ‘Let´s get that forward-thinking, future-proofing strategic thinking going.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Dr. Stacy Hope LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stacyhope84/ Dr. Stacy Hope Twitter: @SAAHConsultancy WIM100 website: https://www.womeninmining.org.uk/wim100/ WIM Twitter: @WIM_UK WIM Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WomenInMiningUK WIM LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/women-in-mining-uk-/ WIM Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/women_in_mining_uk/?igshid=7tm9rcyywmwp INDABA 2022: https://miningindaba.com/Home VALUABLE RESOURCES Email: rob@mining-international.org Website: https://www.mining-international.org/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/MiningRobTyson Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theminingpodcast/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast/videos ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Exploiting Gold, Copper, Vanadium And More Assets in Multiple Jurisdictions With Scott Hicks
In this episode, we chat with Scott Hicks, VP of Corporate Development & Communications for Luminex Resources, a Vancouver-based Canadian & precious metals exploration and development company focusing on a Gold and Copper project in Ecuador. Over the last decades, Scott has worked on a variety of equity, debt, and advisory assignments in Canada and Australia. He talks about the company, its projects, and the general outlook for commodities. Luminex Resources is one of Ross Beaty’s development companies so be sure to listen. KEY TAKEAWAYS Luminex has the largest gold deposit in Ecuador, one of the biggest in the world, which also contains billions of pounds of copper. In 2022, the focus is their gold drilling programs and are advancing permitting for their vanadium and other projects. Their Ecuador-based partners include Anglo American and JOGMEC. Much of Ecuador has not been thoroughly explored using modern techniques. In 2013/14, the government began to actively encourage mining once again. The infrastructure in Ecuador is excellent, with good roads, hydropower, modern port facilities, and plenty of water. Many communities welcome mining, but in certain areas, there is some resistance. There is potential for more vanadium redox battery usage, so Luminex has a small company targeting that metal. Vanadium batteries don´t degrade, which makes a leasing model viable, that reduces the upfront costs involved in their use. Luminex has a good mix of assets in mining-friendly jurisdictions. The price outlook for gold is positive. In the podcast, Scott explains why he believes that is the case. With copper, grades from existing mines are degrading and new facilities are not coming on stream fast enough to meet demand. So, the copper price should remain strong. The company is also investing in and incubating other people´s mining projects. Examples of which are shared in the podcast. BEST MOMENTS ‘We are sitting at about 17 million ounces of gold right now and about 2.2 billion pounds of copper. ´ ‘In Ecuador, the permitting process… is actually pretty fast.’ ‘It´s early days in the vanadium space... but we´ve seen prices north of $600 a tonne for pig iron.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Websites: https://luminagold.com/ https://luminexresources.com/ https://strategic-res.com/ Twitter: @Scott_ITBM @lumina_gold @LuminexRes @StrategicRes VALUABLE RESOURCES Email: rob@mining-international.org Website: https://www.mining-international.org/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/MiningRobTyson Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theminingpodcast/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast/videos ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Transforming Mine Planning to Improve Profits with Mark Bowater
In this episode, we chat with Mark Bowater, an experienced mine engineer and business owner with over 30 years of industry experience. In Australia, he worked with some of the majors and, during his career, has had directorships & ownerships of companies. Mark has recently written a free book called "Crimes Against Mine Planning". During this podcast, he tells us more about the book and why he thinks mine planning is a broken model, and what needs to be used instead. KEY TAKEAWAYS Mark´s aim is to leave the mining industry in better shape than it was 30 years ago. His book is a part of that. The book is written so that stakeholders, surveyors, and everyone can understand the mine planning process. The current approach to mine planning does not take enough account of the physical realities of mining. Probabilistic planning is a far more effective approach. It enables you to recognise that delays happen and have a plan in place that can quickly be adapted. Optimistic planning assumptions shorten the shelf life of the plan, which undermines the role of mine planners. Using software, that is being developed, it will be possible to plan using a probabilistic approach rather than continuing to use a deterministic model. Performance motivating should not be a part of the mine plan. It needs to be benchmarked separately. BEST MOMENTS ‘I´ve spent 30 years working in the industry. I would now like to work on the industry. ´ ‘The solution is stochastic or probabilistic planning.’ ‘We have a lack of KPIs that measure the quality of mine plans… we focus on the wrong things.’ ‘Writing the book has forced me to think at a deeper level.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Link to the free PDF version of Crimes Against Mine Planning: https://markbowater.com/shop/ols/products/crimes-against-mine-planning-ebook The paid version of the book: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Crimes-Against-Mine-Planning-Pitfalls-ebook/dp/B09SXL8MVR/ Website: https://markbowater.com/ LinkedIn: https://au.linkedin.com/in/mineplanningguru VALUABLE RESOURCES Email: rob@mining-international.org Website: https://www.mining-international.org/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/MiningRobTyson Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theminingpodcast/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast/videos ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Kyler Hardy is the CEO of Cloudbreak Discovery, a junior exploration/development company that partners with explorers and developers to advance assets. Cloudbreak has a focus on battery and base metals projects. They own equity positions and royalties in a variety of projects across multiple jurisdictions, primarily in the Americas and Africa. Kyler has a background in finance and executive management/Directorships within the resources sector. In this episode, he provides us with an update on what he has been doing and what Cloudbreak has achieved within the base and battery metals sectors. KEY TAKEAWAYS Cloudbreak discovery is a project generator for the natural resource sectors. They mainly acquire early-stage to mid-stage assets. Norseman silver has recently ended up with some significant grab samples. Including, over 30% having 1%+ copper in them. The strategic alliance with Allianz minerals, in the USA, is bearing fruit. Klondike has over six kilometres of 6.23% copper. Their large lithium projects in the US are moving forwards rapidly. During the next 12 months, they are planning to explore multiple West African and Canadian assets and buy more. Cloudbreak is currently diversifying its portfolio to include more bulk materials and battery metals. Demand for bulk materials like Bauxite, (used to make aluminium) is also likely to soar. Aluminium can be used to make lighter vehicles, which saves fuel. In the podcast, Kyler talks about other batteries and net-zero metals, and other materials that are needed to make the green revolution work. BEST MOMENTS ‘We´ve married a good corporate team and a great technical team. ´ ‘It´s been a pretty busy six months and the team is just getting going.’ ‘For the US government, having lithium production in the country is a key metric.’ ‘Our alliance with Allianz in the US is because we believe that the area has been underexplored for the last decade, or so.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Website: https://cloudbreakdiscovery.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/CloudbreakPlc Dig Deep Podcast episode 161 - https://omny.fm/shows/dig-deep-the-mining-podcast/interview-with-kyler-hardy-ceo-of-cloudbreak-disco VALUABLE RESOURCES Email: rob@mining-international.org Website: https://www.mining-international.org/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/MiningRobTyson Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theminingpodcast/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast/videos ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Trends That Are Redefining Mining in 2022 with Andrew Swart
In this episode, we chat with Andrew Swart, Global Mining and Metals Leader at Deloitte. He talks about their recently released 2022 Global Mining Trends Report. A report that focuses on the top 10 trends that will impact the mining industry in the next 12-18 months. KEY TAKEAWAYS This year´s report focuses on redefining the mining industry. There are currently many external forces driving change. Including, ESG, changing values, labour forces, and changes in demand. A lack of talent is making a huge difference to the culture of mining. Turning to less traditional talent pools and adopting more flexible working practices is helping the industry to bridge the gap. Many talented people now want to be a part of positive change and look for that when deciding where to work. Companies are now thinking more about how to mitigate the risk from climate change, e.g., more flooding and inclement weather. The value chain is changing, new customer bases are coming on stream. On The Verge of Huge Growth in Mexico and Canada With Ralph Shearing of Altaley Mining Corp
In this episode, we chat to Ralph Shearing, CEO & President of Altaley Mining Corp who is a Canadian publicly listed mining company on both the TSX and the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. They operate in Mexico where they engage in exploration, development, and operation of polymetallic mineral resource projects Ralph is a geologist by background. He has been with the company for an incredible 36 years. Ralph is on the podcast to talk about the company and its gold and zinc projects, entrepreneurship, and growth areas in the industry. KEY TAKEAWAYS Altaley Mining Corp is just a few weeks away from getting their first ball mill up and running at Tahuehueto. With the 2nd one coming on stream later in 2022. By mid-2022 production will be at 1000 tonnes a day. They are close to completing testing of two technologies. Both of which have boosted gold and silver extraction levels. They are currently pulling in $2 to $3 million EBITA from their Campo Morado polymetallic mine. By mid-2022 they will start to produce a copper concentrate alongside the zinc they already mine. Copper is a commodity that should perform well for the long term. The Campo Morado mine produces around 2,000 tonnes a day and has a 20-year life. Both projects have several opportunities to expand, which Ralph talks about in the episode. There is a lot of growth potential for the Alt-a-lay stock price. Ralph explains why, during the podcast. The fact there are not enough people around with the right knowledge means that there are still lots of opportunities within the mining sector.
