Mechanised Tunnelling and Mining How One Industry is Influencing the Other with Diane Mather

In this episode, we chat with Diane Mather, who specialises in tunnelling. Apart from working for Inland Rail as the design manager, she is also the chair for the Australian Tunnelling Society. She has worked on multiple rail-related tunnelling projects as well as in several mining settings.   Diane was introduced to us by Michael Moore having studied together at Camborne School of Mines. She studied for a Geology, Geotechnical, and Tunnelling degree. Diane is on the podcast to discuss all things tunnelling with an emphasis on mining and how they combine and interact. We talk about the main differences and similarities between tunnelling & mining. As well as what technologies and innovation mining and tunnelling have in common. Plus, much more.   KEY TAKEAWAYS   Diane has worked for numerous mines as well as on other types of tunnelling projects. Mining design is temporary compared to infrastructure tunnels. Mine structures are usually easier to build because there is no other infrastructure to work around e.g., sewers. Mechanised tunnel building is a lot faster than drill and blast. Some issues need to be overcome before the use of mechanised tunnelling machines becomes more common in the mining industry. Issues that are discussed in the podcast, Tunnelling is becoming more popular because it reduces the impact infrastructure has on the neighbourhood. Often tunnels are the only practical option in areas of high-density population. Many mining industry innovations have been adopted for tunnelling. Several examples are discussed in the podcast.  Mines are increasingly using LIDAR and GIS systems to map and manage their projects. These tools also have a role in managing the relationship with the public. Mines are taking the lead in the use of autonomous vehicles. An approach tunnellers are starting to adopt. Automation is greatly reducing the risks for both industries. For miners transport of their products from the mine is a major issue. A possible solution is discussed. BEST MOMENTS ‘I fly in and out of some of the best mining and infrastructure projects in Australia. ´ ‘The instrumentation, monitoring and geological mapping that´s been used in mining have been implemented in tunnelling.’ ‘A mechanised tunnelling machine is a big, long lead time procurement item.’   EPISODE RESOURCES Diane Mather - QLD Chapter Chair - Australian Tunnelling Society | LinkedIn The Australian Tunnelling Association Website - https://www.ats.org.au/ Details of ATS committee members - https://www.ats.org.au/about-us/committee-members/   VALUABLE RESOURCES mailto:rob@mining-international.org https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ http://www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3   ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. In this episode, we chat to James Withall, CEO of Rupert Resources who are a junior miner with advanced exploration and near-term production potential in Northern Finland James, a geologist by background has over 20 years of experience in mining. Working in the field and the investment space. We discuss his journey and how Rupert Resources has evolved. Talking about their Ikkari discovery, their Pahtavaara mine, and what potential Finland has as a mining jurisdiction. KEY TAKEAWAYS Rupert Resources is for the most part a mineral exploration company, but they now also working the assets they own. They bought their Northern Finland asset right at the bottom of the market. There is a lot of potential in Northern Finland. It is ripe for large-scale exploration Finland is an easy place to get to and travel around. There is plenty of 100% renewable energy available. Finnish workers work well and are very safety conscious. Finland is no more expensive to work in than places like Canada Being a small company allows you to move fast. There is no bureaucracy to hold you back. They have taken a fund manager approach and applied it to exploration. Rupert Resources' exploration results have been fantastic. They have just raised $48 million, so cash flow is not an issue. The geology of Finland is remarkably similar to West Africa, so the potential for finds is huge. The Ikkari discovery will be out to the market within the next 3 months. Rupert Resources now have new geological maps of their land, which is enabling them to do more focused exploration drills. They picked up another licence in the South, so will be exploring there too. BEST MOMENTS ‘There is a lot more potential in Northern Finland. ´ ‘Our job is to demonstrate the economic potential of whatever we find.’ ‘Finland just haven´t had that really intensive wave of modern commercial exploration.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Website - https://rupertresources.com/ Rupert Resources | LinkedIn Twitter - https://twitter.com/RupertResources Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/rupertresources VALUABLE RESOURCES rob@mining-international.org https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Why Ferro-Alloy Resources is Perfectly Placed to Ride the Vanadium Wave with Nick Bridgen

In this episode, we chat to Nick Bridgen, Chief Executive at Ferro-Alloy Resources, who is developing a giant vanadium deposit in southern Kazakhstan.   Nick is a chartered accountant by background and also studied a degree in Psychology, Statistics, and Physics. His career has been in executive management within the resources industry. So, he is well versed in developing Ferro Alloy Resources to its full potential. Helped by the fact that he has worked in Kazakhstan for an extended period of time. We talk about the exisitng operations and the huge project they are developing.   KEY TAKEAWAYS   The firm is already profitable and well-funded but there is much, much more to come. 95% of their vanadium assets have not been touched yet. They have already secured all of the funding they need to develop the vanadium extraction side of their business. Ferro-Alloy Resources can extract their vanadium without a concentrator roaster. This means much lower capital and operation costs, which makes them highly competitive. The site already has power, roads, and a nearby workforce. They estimate that by spending about $100 million on phase 1 they will eventually turn over $2 billion across both phases. Vanadium is used to strengthen steel and demand is growing. Where weight is not important, vanadium flow batteries are an attractive proposition. Kazakhstan is now a well-run country, that has actively worked to make mining easier. The by-products the firm is planning to produce, and sell are expected to more than pay for the vanadium production costs. The firm´s small pilot plant has enabled them to develop the expertise they will need to extract the huge reserves of vanadium that they have. Their small pilot plant enabled them to discover that concentrate processing is also highly profitable. They are also currently upgrading and expanding their concentrates processing business. The feasibility study is due to be released in the first half of next year.     BEST MOMENTS ‘That could increase the demand for vanadium by 50 or even 100%. ´ ‘We will be able to take advantage of the growth in demand of the world and supply it at a cost that doesn't kill that demand.’ ‘We are now fully funded.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Website – http://www.ferro-alloy.com  Email - info@ferro-alloy.com    VALUABLE RESOURCES rob@mining-international.org  https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/  www.mining-international.org  https://twitter.com/MiningConsult  https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3      ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Increasing Production Organically and Building for the Long Term with Ravi Sood

In this episode, we chat to Ravi Sood, Chairman of Galane Gold who is a gold producer and explorer with mining operations and exploration tenements in Botswana, South Africa, and the US.   Ravi is an entrepreneur with many business interests. He tells us about Galane Gold, its future prospects, and some of the other interests that Ravi is pursuing with the mining and resources space. We also talk about macroeconomics and what is happening in today’s financial world.   KEY TAKEAWAYS   Gold is unique. Even in today´s digital world, it has a strong future. There is plenty of room in the industry for smaller operators. Mines that do not fit well into large companies’ profiles represent opportunities for other types of owners. Galane Gold likes to buy working mines that can be invested in and grown. Established mines come with strong working relationships and networks, which helps to get things done fast. There is usually also infrastructure already in place that can easily be upgraded. Transitioning their Botswana gold mine from open cast to underground has added decades of productive life to the asset. Galane Gold funds its own projects. The company is heavily insider-owned. Their key goal is to create value for the owners, so they take fewer risks. The economic situation we have now is mathematically intractable. The world cannot run the same playbook that got us out of trouble after WWII. Inflation will hurt a lot of people, but it is likely to be the way out of the current financial crisis. Precious metals and a few other assets tend to perform well in inflationary environments. Galane Gold´s current focus is ramping up production across their sites. They are also diversifying into solar and wind production.     BEST MOMENTS ‘Gold has played its role for a very long time, and even in this digital future, it is going to continue to have a role. ´ ‘I think gold´s going higher and it is going to go there pretty quickly.’ ‘If you´re taking something on, make sure that it is worthwhile.’   EPISODE RESOURCES Ravi Sood - Chairman - Galane Gold Ltd. | LinkedIn  Website – http://galanegold.com/  Email – ravi@galanegold.com      VALUABLE RESOURCES rob@mining-international.org  https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/  www.mining-international.org  https://twitter.com/MiningConsult  https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3      ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Exploiting the Great Potential That WA Now Offers with Shaun Bunn of Empire Metals

In this episode, we chat to Shaun Bunn, Managing Director of Empire Metals who is an AIM-listed exploration and resource development company with a multi-commodity project portfolio comprising gold and copper interests in Australia, Georgia, and Austria.   With a metallurgy background, Shaun has over 35 years of industry experience in technical and executive management positions working across many jurisdictions including Australia, Africa, and Europe and has recently taken up the hot seat with Empire Metals and will give us an overview of the company and its prospects.   KEY TAKEAWAYS   Empire Metals have just acquired the Central Menzies gold prospect. Over a million ounces have already been pulled from that area. Empire Metals has a particularly strong and experienced board. The explosion of mining in the WA area is beneficial has created additional issues. There are shortages of drilling rigs and skilled labour in Australia. Both challenges take time and planning to overcome. CoVid is still making the labour shortage harder to solve. The shortage of construction workers is a huge issue for those building new facilities. Empire Metals are planning to build up a portfolio of projects to extend their base and protect themselves from market changes. They are particularly looking at those projects that will generate cash flow. The project flow rate within the WA market is gathering momentum. New science and technologies are uncovering new deposits in old mining areas and making exploiting them viable. The plan is to exploit their current tenant base, which has huge potential, rather than overstretch themselves. That includes the Eclipse project.   BEST MOMENTS ‘we've got a strong, well-balanced board. ´ ‘the shortage of construction workers is going to impact the mining industry.’ ‘there are large areas of Western Australia, particularly in the Eastern goldfields, that are under-explored.’   EPISODE RESOURCES Website: https://www.empiremetals.co.uk/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/Empiremetalsltd Contact form - https://www.empiremetals.co.uk/contact/ Shaun Bunn LinkedIn - linkedin.com/in/shaun-bunn-3a5b7829   VALUABLE RESOURCES rob@mining-international.org https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. He is now spearheading this exciting project with Foran Mining. We talk about the deposit at McIlvenna Bay and the uniqueness and potential it has. As well as the recent investment by Prem Watsa’s Fairfax Financial that they received.   KEY TAKEAWAYS. Foran Mining has low-cost assets, that are rich in deposits which will continue to produce over the long term. The infrastructure needed to exploit the area was already in place, saving them a huge amount of money. Their current focus is building a carbon-neutral copper mine. They use hydropower, build using as many green products as possible, and use electric trucks. Their green approach has also produced economic benefits. Foran mining works to build up the economy of the areas in which they work. They subscribe to the circular economics principle. Investing in your people benefits the community and sets things up for future growth. The government in Canada is very switched on to the potential benefits of mining and doing so in a way that benefits everyone. The Bigstone deposit has copper and gold. As well as 7 metres of 27% zinc. The deposits at McIlvenna Bay typically appear in clusters. The area has copper, gold, silver, and zinc. The deposits start at about 30 meters, just below the dollar mark. They have intercepted about 14 meters of copper mineralization across the deposit. Foran Mining also has an exploration program in place that stretches into 2022. Wade Burton who is the Warren Buffet of Canada, has recently invested in Foran Mining.   BEST MOMENTS ‘In Canada, I was optimising and managing our overall assets, as well as the trading business… Also looking for growth opportunities. ‘We want to make it as economical as possible and as sustainable as possible.’ ‘The future for Foran Mining is extremely bright.’     EPISODE RESOURCES LinkedIn - https://ca.linkedin.com/company/foran-mining Website – https://foranmining.com/ Email - ir@foranmining.com   VALUABLE RESOURCES rob@mining-international.org https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3     ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. The Multiple Growing Streams of Demand for Silver Explained by Michael DiRienzo

In this episode, we chat with Michael DiRienzo, Executive Director of The Silver Institute. A non-profit international association that draws its membership from across the breadth of the silver industry. Established in 1971, the Institute serves as the industry’s voice in increasing public understanding of the many uses and values of silver. Michael has been a long-standing member of the silver institute and talks about all things silver, trends, and the future of silver.   KEY TAKEAWAYS   Silver is an indispensable metal, with many important uses. The Silver Institute is involved in programmes that encourage more use of silver. As well as developing new products and markets. The Silver Institute provides reliable reports about the silver market. Including free ones and specialist information about specific sectors e.g., solar and the automotive industries. Silver production, supply, and demand all dipped because of the CoVid crisis. The photovoltaic market bucked the trend, with demand growing by 2% despite CoVid. Investment in silver also grew in 2020 and did so in double figures. For 2021, it should remain high. Demand for mined silver is set to grow and production is expected to increase by about 8%. The 2020 silver squeeze was triggered by social media. It helped to bring a fresh wave of new eyes to the silver investment market. Demand from the automotive, electronics, solar, silverware, and jewellery sectors all look set to be strong in 2021. The reopening of economies and accelerated vaccination in industrialized countries is a good thing for silver. Silver has an important role to play in decarbonisation. If something has an on/off switch, it almost certainly contains silver. The automation of vehicles represents a big opportunity for silver. The outlook for silver is extremely good across most areas, the institute´s free survey report explains why that is the case.   BEST MOMENTS ‘Silver is an indispensable metal. ´ ‘it did create a whole new wave of fresh eyes on the silver investment market.’ ‘We like to think of silver as one of the decarbonisation metals.’   EPISODE RESOURCES Website - https://www.silverinstitute.org Silver Institute Global Survey - https://www.silverinstitute.org/all-world-silver-surveys/ Silver Institute Twitter - https://twitter.com/silverinstitute   VALUABLE RESOURCES rob@mining-international.org https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3     ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Interview with Chris Gerteisen of Nova Minerals

In this episode we chat to Chris Gerteisen, Executive Director and CEO of Nova Minerals, a minerals explorer and developer focused on gold and lithium projects in North America. These projects include Nova’s Estelle Gold Project in Alaska and the company’s majority-owned Snow Lakes Resources, which is a lithium project in Canada.   Chris is a geologist by background, with 20 years of experience managing and advancing complex and challenging resource projects across North America, Australia, and Asia for the likes of Newmont, Oxiana, and Pan Aust so has a good pedigree behind him.   We talk about the Korbel Main deposit at the Estelle Project as well as details of the drilling planned for Isabella, You Beauty, and Cathedral throughout the Korbel Valley. We chat about their lithium project as well as their stake in RotorX Aircraft company which is exciting.   KEY TAKEAWAYS   There is a new Alaskan Gold Rush happening. Alaska is very pro-mining. So it is relatively easy to set up and run profitable mines there. Currently, all of Nova Mineral´s Alaskan mining claims are on state land, which makes permitting easier. They have 324 square kilometers of claims to explore, in a very productive area. Nova Minerals is a full year-round operator - despite Alaska´s inclement winters. As well as their producing mines they also have 15 other prospects that are at various stages of advancement. The use of XRT ore sorting and milling has enabled them to upgrade extraction by up to 10 times on some materials. Our resources are very undervalued compared to those of our peers, so there are some opportunities there. The lithium project has 11.1 million tonnes at 1% lithium. Using hydropower enables their Canadian operation to be a low carbon project. Interest in RotorX´s automated electronic-powered aircraft is growing fast. The development of their heavy lift drones is progressing well. As is their electric copter-based urban transport solution. Nova Minerals is just getting started. The best is yet to come.     BEST MOMENTS ‘This belt is where the Alaskan Gold Rush has happened. ´ ‘Every 6 months we´ve increased the resource by a million ounces.’ ‘4.7 million ounces at Korbel alone, RPM coming online and advancing these other prospects…...’   GUEST RESOURCES Twitter - https://twitter.com/novaminerals Website - https://novaminerals.com.au/ Email – info@novaminerals.com.au/   VALUABLE RESOURCES rob@mining-international.org https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3     ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Interview with Hu Fleming – Water Management – Meeting the Challenges Now and in the Future

In this episode, we chat with Hu Fleming, an expert, and senior executive in water management. He was the head of water management for Anglo American. Here, he talks about all things water within the mining industry. We are going to cover water topics that are maybe not obvious to many in the industry. Things that you should be aware of when making everyday decisions. Water will become much scarcer as we move into a commodities super-cycle. So, this episode is a must-listen. Enabling you to learn how to help preserve as much water as possible. KEY TAKEAWAYS Hu has been working in the mining water treatment technology field for 40 years. Being involved in the extraction of all kinds of commodities. Water represents around 15% of the cost of mining. A figure that surprises most mining firms. Some mines have had to shut over water issues. Juniors and mid-tiers are increasingly being asked about water usage plans by would-be investors. Shareholders increasingly insist on the ethical use of water. Climate change is impacting the water supply. Supply levels can easily change drastically during the decades-long life of a mine. Water scarcity is the biggest challenge. Discharge issues are becoming increasingly important. Resource recovery is heavily dependent on water. Fortunately, new technologies and processes are helping to reduce this dependency. Water extraction of rare earths from coal waste is now possible and starting to look viable. Water permits are decreasing at a time when mining is expanding. Zero liquid discharge mines are possible. Mining companies need to be good neighbours and work with other associations/businesses to better manage the available water resources. Mines need to be good neighbours. If they are not, they get regulated to oblivion.  BEST MOMENTS ‘Miners discovered a bit late that water was so significant to their overall financial sustainability. ´ ‘Shareholders have become very activist…they recognise that water generally is the largest flashpoint for communities.’ ‘Every mine should be able to reuse every cubic metre of water that they have.’ VALUABLE RESOURCES rob@mining-international.org https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia.
