Effect on EmotionsIt slows me down in a great way. It opens you up and it slows you down to the moments of now. You look back on life and think about how many times you went from point A to point B without looking at all the different things in between. It also centers me a bit, it has an ease factor, it increases happiness, increases sleep, it's a wonderful tool to have in life.
Thoughts on Breathing
I do five big breaths here and there. Just to keep it simple with the kids we do five breath beginnings and then I'll vary it up. Some days I'll not think about my breathing and other times I'll consciously take in big inhales and exhale them quickly. Other times I'll try to sync the breathing up. I got a set of Tibetan Mala beads which I use to count the beads as I breathe.

Advice for Newbie
Just take a deep breath, exhale and decide you're going to start it. Just attempt to do whatever you can do. I would start with the apps. I would not try to do it by myself.

Effect on EmotionsIt has enhanced my gratitude, that is the best way of putting it. It has enhanced how much and what I can be grateful for.
Thoughts on BreathingI try to take nice full breaths while I am meditating and on days where I am lethargic. I try to remind myself to take long deep breaths just to keep the lungs active and the blood flowing. I have personally noticed the connection between being still with not a lot of movements and short, shallow breaths and my mood being impacted by that.

Advice for Newbie
The best advice I ever received was from Tim Ferris: mindfulness is not about trying to find some epiphany. I think once you realize that meditation and mindfulness isn't the goal of those two things, that experiencing mindfulness is much easier.

Effect on EmotionsIt is that idea of less friction. I find that the days are so much smoother and the days where I have had most regular practice, where I have been the most conscious, have been easy. There is no car horn, no traffic and no emotional fight that can really ruffle it and it's just this feeling of, life's pretty easy. I'm just being carried along, doing my work, no road blocks, it's kind of a pleasurable feeling.
Thoughts on BreathingFor me one of the things I do as I work because for the last three or four years I have worked 12 hour days because I have had multiple jobs. The hardest thing for me was the stress which is despite meditating in the morning daily, despite working out, despite eating right its been kind of hard to be conscious of my stress level and to me the biggest trigger was the breath. I basically used the pomodoro technique which was a break every 25 minutes and I used that 5 minutes as a quick meditative break and I basically do a quick assessment to see what place in my stomach or my chest my breath is in. That has become the trigger for the stress I have.

Advice for Newbie
Much like any person who acquires great skill or great accolades, it all comes back to some kind of daily skill. The daily skill is the physical practice of meditation and the hard part is going to be the physical practice of meditation. Focus on whatever it takes for you to come up with a few key habits to meditate daily, whether its a time of day with some kind of ritual, maybe its not even seated meditation, maybe its walking meditation or even food meditation. Maybe food is a personal weakness of yours, try and start meditation there. Maybe it's in the gym, start meditation there feeling every fiber of your body as you lift the weight, as you run or whatever it is you're doing. I would say think carefully, what are the few vital habits you can do on a daily basis that will lead you to the more conscious, the more present life?

Effect on EmotionsIt helps me love and accept them [emotions] and feel them fully. When I'm contracted from that mindfulness, when I'm just in the swirl of it, then they get lodged, I don't feel fully. I suppress the ones that are not so positive, that I'd rather not have. Emotions that come from some tension or a day of strife or struggle. I'd rather not feel them, but I've found that when I'm present, mindful and dialed in, that they transform through my love and acceptance of my emotions.
Thoughts on BreathingIn the martial arts we have this type of three part breath: from the belly, that moves like a bellows, we fill the lower part of the belly and even energetically we visualize that we're breathing even deeper into our hips and genitals on the inhalation. First the breathing of the lower body and then the solar plexus area and then the breath fulfills its expansion at the upper part of the breath, relaxing in the opposite way. So relaxing from the top down, like a bellows opening at the bottom and then closing, stoking this flame. For me, breath is the doorway in, its the immediate barometer of my awareness and mindfulness.

The first thing a warrior sage does, they look for what are the movements, what are the things out there in life that are seeking your adherence? They want to make you part of their movement. We see so many political parties out there. They're drumming up emotions, pushing this and that and evoking opposition, we see it everywhere. Just take a look at, where is my energy, my units of emotional energy, going? Wherever it's going and you're getting evoked, you're getting riled up, you're feeling righteous, you're feeling, we need to stop this, there is deep truth in that. You don't want to deny that truth, but from a reactive place, as a warrior, you are actually losing energy, leaking energy by the excessive re-activeness. So what a warrior sage does, is they lower the importance of the very thing, paradoxically that they have vehemency against. That lowering of the importance, the units of power that were stuck in the pushing against, they reeled back, and they come back to the source of your choice. Then, paradoxically, the less you say, the more effect happens. You are able to do and achieve and create more change with the thing that you actually have interest in because you're coming from a place of greater influence, a place of of depth, so your words are heard, rather than your screams and shouts. They hear your soul speak with authority, because that is the ultimate authority.

Effect on EmotionsThis is one of the most tangible benefits I think. It really puts everything in perspective and it really does help because those emotional outbursts are really bad. It takes us off the rails and it is sometimes really hard to get back on.
Thoughts on BreathingI don't focus on breathing at all now that I live here in Colorado Springs. Sometimes if I run up the stairs all of a sudden I have to take some deep breaths because the air is thinner. Breathing isn't part of my practice at all. The sahashmarg practice is actually a form of Raija yoga, which Raija yoga is one of the four main branches of yoga from India from long ago. Raija yoga is yoga of the mind so there is no breathing, no postures and no stretching.

Advice for Newbie
Start meditating in earnest. That means to learn meditation and try to really become good at it. The biggest misconception about meditation is that you are supposed to sit down and be thoughtless and so many people who come to me to learn because I teach it and say, oh I tried it and I can't do it. You're doing it. The thing is, in the beginning you're gonna have a lot of thoughts. You just have to learn how to handle them, which is to ignore them and get in the habit of ignoring them. Then as these thoughts come out, your thoughts will become less. Learning a real form of meditation; that's the base of everything I think. Without meditation, I don't know how much you can implement mindfulness or spirituality truly.

Effect on EmotionsBeing in such a physical sport as I was, you often have emotions arise as a result of that combat. I think I had to control that a lot with mindfulness and I think that just spread out into every area of my life.

My way was to develop a way to implement mindfulness into something that I really loved and it naturally moved into everything else. Being aware of your surroundings and how your actions affect yourself and other people can really improve the quality of everything you care about.
