096 Nature and Mindfulness Weekends With Bruce Langford and Hilde Larsen
Nature and mindfulness; there are so many ways to connect with
ourselves and each other through nature. Sometimes we forget how amazing
we feel when we immerse ourselves in nature by taking a walk in the
forest or walking by a body of water. Nature can heal. Nature can
rejuvenate. Nature can repair. Do yourself a favour and determine to spend some time in nature this weekend.
Quotes:"See
how nature - trees, flowers, grass - grows in silence; see the stars,
the moon and the sun, how they move in silence, we need silence to be
able to touch souls.” Mother Theresa
“Go into the wilderness. There you will find your own revelations.” Roxana Jones
"Just feel the magic in the air and the power in the breeze,
Feel the energy of the plants, the bushes and the trees,
Let yourself be surrounded by nature at its best,
Calm yourself, focus and let magic do the rest." Sally Walker.
"Storms make trees take deeper roots." Dolly Parton
"Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished." - Lao Tzu

Effect on EmotionsIt
causes me to take a pause rather than just act. It's not just about
getting things done for me anymore, it's about getting the right things
done.
Thoughts on BreathingIf
I get really worked up I take ten deep breaths, which is a really good
strategy for me to calm down. So paying attention to breath is an
important thing but like I said earlier most of my focus when I'm in
some sort of meditation I try to keep it on god.

Advice for NewbieI
would say start with the "why" for sure. If you had all the money in
the world and everything you're doing and money is not a factor anymore
what do you do? What do you do with that time? and if you can get to
that point it just opens doors for you because you start thinking
consciously well do I really need the money to do these things.

Effect on EmotionsWell it has helped me get in touch with them and helped me learn how to reprogram my habitual emotions when necessary.
Thoughts on BreathingI do deep breathing every day. I mean for me it's essential rather than just breathing, breathing I do deep breathing. Anytime I feel myself contracting about anything I just will take five to ten deep breathes. When I get into bed I take a number of deep breaths just to kind of let go of the day. I think that anytime you're under stress it is really important to do deep dire-forma tic breathing, not breathing from your upper chest but breathing from your abdomen.

Advice for NewbieSit still for five minutes a day. One of the exercises I give to some of my clients is never go through a yellow light, in other words when you come up to a yellow light don't put your foot on the gas, stop which is really hard for type a people. So that to me is one of the exercises. The other one is to sit with your eyes closed for five minutes.

093 Vision and Mindfulness Weekends With Bruce Langford
Vision is necessary to exist. At least that's my opinion and that of
many others as well. Life is much more enjoyable when it feels like a
journey. Step by step you are moving closing to your vision of what you
would like your life to be like. Mindfulness lets us move forward
without the stress and anxiety that is sometimes present. What does the
word vision mean to you? Because I'm a musician, I often think about starting to learn a piece of music and moving toward a place where I can perform that selection.

Effect on EmotionsIt
keeps me present. It allows me to kind of run that litmus test about my
dimmer that I mentioned awhile ago. Do I wanna go to war on this one, I
think is the big question for anyone who is in a marriage has asked
themselves is this the argument or is this the conversation I want to go
to war over and it rarely is.
Thoughts on BreathingMy
son and our foreign exchange student were in Davis and in a hot tub and
playing around a couple weekends ago and there was a clock on the wall.
We were having competitions for holding our breath, I don't know what
that means but there maybe is a calmness that comes from not living
sugar free or for the concentration of juggling. I won the contest by
just breaking two minutes underwater in a Jacuzzi. I do enjoy breathing I
do love taking deep breaths to calm myself down sometimes.

Advice for NewbieWhat
I would recommend somebody do is some of the things you just talked
about, breathe and develop some sort of litmus test of am I being
mindful right now. I think you know what comes up as I say that Bruce is
really mindfulness is different for every person and so to get some
definition, if you're someone who watches a lot of TV who has never done
any sort of personal growth work. For you maybe mindfulness is getting
through a podcast, a twenty five or thirty minute podcast with two or so
people talking about mindfulness, that might be a huge step of your
heroes journey. If you are living in some sort of mindfulness now what's
the challenge you can do for yourself that feels on the edge, what is
an edge that you are willing to lean into.

090 Imagination and Mindfulness Weekends With Bruce Langford
Imagination and mindfulness fits together beautifully. What does
imagination conjure up for you? For me, I think of children. I think of
the book, Alice in Wonderland, by Luis Carroll. There is so much to
think about in that book that connects imagination with mindfulness.
The
topic of imagination takes me back to my childhood. Even though I have
four brothers and two sisters, I felt alone a lot of the time. My
brothers were off doing other things. My mom suggested I go visit Frieny
who lived back by the tree. I'd ride my bike there and spend time fully
immersed in my imagination.
Looking back, I have a different
perspective. At times in my life people would imply that people who had
an imaginary friend as a child, were not quite like the rest of us.
Maybe something was off about that person.
Now I believe it is
completely healthy for kids to use their vivid imaginations and I look
back and think it was totally cool to use my creativity the way I did.
When
I was creating my anti-bullying presentations, I decided to use my
creativity to write songs to grab the attention of children and adults. I
believed a great way to connect with the world and share a message was
to create something.
I remember going back to a school where I had
presented anti-bullying shows three years earlier. The students had
moved on to higher grades, but still remembered many of the catchy songs
I had shared with them during my first visit.
One of the songs
was called, "Confidence". I believe we need to share concepts of
confidence with children because that is sometimes the reason why kids
are picked on, is because they don't exhibit enough confidence.
Sometimes we just have to take a deep breath and show confidence. Using
mindfulness concepts can also help children to be more confident.
Some
days I would sit at the piano and think about composing a song about a
particular topic, like confidence for instance. At first I'd feel
blocked, but then I'd realize it was simply a matter of allowing myself
to just go there, to relax. And what would relax my mind and not put
pressure on myself?
I'd put my hands on the keyboard, take a
breath and just let my fingers play certain notes and melodies. I'd
experiment with catchy sounds and before long I'd be thinking about
words and thoughts that had to do with that topic.
I'd ask myself,
'What are three major thoughts about this topic?'. Then I'd think of
three other thoughts to support each of the major thoughts. Before long
I'd have a song. I love writing songs and it's kind of funny that some
of the best songs just seem to come randomly.
The Wizard of Oz is a
great movie to think about when we think about the topic of
mindfulness. It has incredible messages for entrepreneurs and really
anybody who is interested in how imagination relates to mindfulness.
Quotes:Imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality. Lewis Carroll - Alice in Wonderland
The best use of imagination is creativity. The worst use of imagination is anxiety. Deepak Chopra

Effect on EmotionsI
believe mindfulness has affected my emotions by showing up focused on
the client in a more empathetic, compassionate and caring way that
better serves the client and for some reason that naturally tends to
create trust and gets a better result all around.
Thoughts on BreathingBreathing's
huge. I believe a lot of times my meditation is literally ten minutes
of deep breathing and it's calming down because often I'll catch myself
going through a really busy or stressful day. That breathing is really
shallow and that's where I see myself kind of just getting close to just
getting off the game plan or off the rails a little bit. I think
breathing just helps center us and reconnects us back to a calm place
and to think and be aware.
Suggested ResourcesBook: Getting In The Gap by Wayne Dyer
App: HoloSync
Advice for NewbieThe
advice I would give is to just realize that getting through the day,
going through the motions, playing the role of a father, a mother, a
student, a son, a daughter, employee, employer, co worker, that's not
all life is. If we can step back and we can actually connect, we can
navigate all those roles in those situations better. I think all of us
have this enate desire to have a more connecting, fulfilling experience I
think that's why awareness would be an attracted place for someone who
is not exposed to it and maybe be curious enough to start.

Effect on Emotions I have really been able to adjust my emotions as far as just letting go and being able to receive, instead of always trying to push. If I feel like I'm getting worked up about something that means I am pushing and that means I'm not gonna get something that I want. I really need to sit back, take a deep breath and allow it to come to me.
Thoughts on BreathingBreathing is so important. In yoga it's called pranayama. It not only nourishes the cells by oxygenating them. It opens up the connection between your pinial and petuatary glands to connect you to your higher self. That breath is life so oxygen is water, it's in air, and it's in our bodies. It allows our bodies to live, if we stop oxygenating then we start to die. The more you can breathe deeply in your day and clear out that stagnant air at the base of your lungs. Five deep breaths in the morning is a really good way to start your morning, it gives you a really fresh start to the day. I would recommend that.

Advice for Newbie
I would suggest trying to connect to nature for a bit if you're not one to go outdoors very much and to really try and get away from being plugged in all the time. Nature is a great way to do that, kids naturally gravitate there but adults can benefit from that too. Just a walk in nature, gardening is a great way, and sleeping outdoors when it's warm is really grounding. People are selling grounding mats that plug into your wall inside as healing mats. You don't have to spend a thousand to twelve hundred dollars on one of these mats when you can go, when it's just grounding you to the earth basically. So you can go outside it's cheap and easy, rent a tent and spend some more time outside. The more time you spend outside the more your rhythm starts to change. You start resetting your rhythm which is what meditation is great at doing, reset your body rhythm.

087 Anxiety and Mindfulness Weekends With Bruce Langford and Jeffrey Agostinelli
Anxiety and mindfulness. "Compulsion can become a form of anxiety, like doing things just to do them." Jeffrey Agostinelli
Anxiety
can bring you down and it can also bring down a family. It can pull
your life to a halt. When I think about anxiety, I think about a time
when I was about eight years old, I lived on the farm with my family
and I noticed that my mom was unhappy. She cried a lot. She seemed upset
and I didn't know why.
Then she got this rash all over her hands.
It was psoriasis. At first it was little patches and then it got to be
on more of her hands and up her wrists. It was red and raw and very
painful.
It was difficult for her to do anything. She would wear
rubber gloves or cotton gloves to protect her hands. It was a really
hard time because we all knew how much pain she was in and how much she
was suffering. It seemed like there had to be a reason.
She went
to the Doctor over and over and the Doctor didn't know what to do. She
tried different creams and nothing seemed to help. There was always this
overriding feeling where I noticed how unhappy she was. It was like a
desperation. Unhappiness shrouded her entire life and her personality.
Then
I think she started to get focused on doing things that she liked to
do. She started to knit and do crafts and other creative activities.
Then the psoriasis started to go away. I don't know if that was a
coincidence but I wonder if it was the mindfulness of working on those
crafts. I think this really helped her to move forward and then the
psoriasis eventually left.
