How Darren Palmer became one of Australia's most influential designers
This episode is proudly sponsored by Carpet Court Australia.
I’m building a house for the very first time, turning a knock down into two beautiful homes in Melbourne. Our project is called The Bellfield Build. Be sure to follow me on Instagram @emilyosmond for snippets as the build unfolds!
We are thrilled to be partnering with Carpet Court, Australia’s largest flooring and blinds retailer, as the flooring supplier for our project.
In this episode, I’m speaking with Darren Palmer, who has been an ambassador for Carpet Court for 8 years, and who is widely regarded as one of Australia’s most renowned and influential interior designers.
Darren is a judge and presenter on the four time “Best Reality Program” Logie award winning show The Block.
He has regularly contributed articles to a selection of Australia’s premier home and lifestyle publications and he has released two books: Easy Luxury: An expert guide to creating your perfect home and Homespace: Changing the space you have into the home you love.
2017 saw Darren launch his own soft furnishing and interiors range Australia wide with department store MYER. In 2018 Darren teamed up with the Interior Design Institute to create his very own accredited online interior design course available worldwide along with launching his own tailored homes with G.J Gardner Homes.
In this episode, Darren opens up about what becoming one of Australia’s most influential interior designers has really involved, including how he got his start, what he has found most challenging during his career, and his biggest advice for others looking to succeed as an interior designer, and in business more broadly.

Along with working with clients privately, Mel more recently launched the Amazing Mums Academy - an online membership for mums, which has allowed her to bring her knowledge and expertise to Mums in a really accessible way, whilst building a community of Mums who support, understand and encourage each other to achieve their goals.
In this episode we discuss:
How Mel went from ‘hope’ marketing to now being in control of her marketing and it feeling easy for her
How Mel has increased her prices over time and had to adjust her money mindset to match
How Mel now markets her offers and what is working well
Struggling with imposter syndrome and how Mel has learnt to manage this

Kate also runs Australia’s only dedicated annual copywriting conference COPYCON.
In this episode, we speak about what 12 years of running an online business have looked like, what it took to reach one million dollars in revenue, and why Kate’s goal now is to start making her business smaller, not bigger.

Attracting profitable, dream clients with brand designer Kim Ryan
Our 100th episode of The Emily Osmond Show is coming up in just a few weeks and to celebrate, we are compiling an episode to feature our listeners - and I would love to hear from you!

Perhaps that is a tip you have been putting to use with great results, a powerful mindset shift, or a realisation about something you could change in your business. It may have been from hearing one of my solo episodes or from listening to one of our brilliant guests!

---
With over 25 years in the design and print industry, Kim Ryan has worked in “all of the roles”: freelance, in-house designer, running her own studio - you name it. Kim started her business, Wild Seed Design, 15 years ago, and today she offers feminine, floral and botanical brand design, specifically for women who want to see their businesses grow and flourish.
Kim is one of our members of The Modern Marketing Collective and I have loved seeing Kim and her business thrive over the past almost year.
In this episode we discuss:
1. The catalyst behind Kim starting her business
2. How Kim attracted her first clients 15 years ago, before social media really existed
3. From thinking social media was just for “young people” and being reluctant to use it to social media now being a key way that Kim attracts her clients
4. Kim’s (very common!) resistance to showing herself in her marketing, how she overcame it, and the huge difference this has made for her business
5. The journey from taking any on any work to cover the bills as a single mum - to tripling her prices, earning more and working less, and only taking on the work she actually wants to do
6. From winging it to working on her business, getting clear about what her ideal business actually looks like, and Kim’s high converting simple sales system.

Scheduling 30 days of content is not a marketing strategy
Ask a business owner what their one wish would be if they had a magic wand for their marketing, and many would say “to have a month of content scheduled”.
There is the constant guilt of not posting enough, like a burden hanging over you.
So “success” can sound like finally having 30 days of posts automatically going out on your social media.
And that’s what you hear from all different people: “Post more content!” and “You have to post every day!” or even “You have to post 3 times a day!”
Let’s say, you did it and you got your 30 days of content scheduled. The month comes to an end, but instead of celebration, you realise nothing in you business has changed, apart from being able to tick the box of posting every day.
If this is you, how is this strategy currently actually working for you?
What is the return you are seeing for your business?
As business owners, time and focus are two resources we need to protect. I want you to get very clear about how you are currently spending yours and why.
Here’s why treating scheduling 30 days of content like a marketing strategy just doesn’t make sense.
If this episode resonated with you, you are going to love my BRAND NEW free training that is going to break down for you the system I have taught to hundreds of students to guide you in going full time in your business the right way so you can avoid the uncertainty, and be strategic in everything you do with your time with laser focus on your goals.
