Former NFL Star Mohamed Massaquoi on Finding Opportunity in Adversity, the NFL, Following Your Dreams, Freak Accidents, Purpose, Courage & Grit (Episode: #22)
Mohamed Massaquoi (@ironmassaquoi) is a former NFL Star and thought leader on organizational change and team culture. In the spring of 2017, Mohamed's life changed following a near-death ATV accident that resulted in the amputation of his left hand. The accident sparked the creation of his company VESSOL, which partners with organizations, leaders, and teams to thrive by improving team culture, diversity & inclusion, and evolution. Before that accident, Mohamed worked in finance at Morgan Stanley and as a professional athlete in the NFL. Mohamed was a 2009 second-round pick for the Cleveland Browns in the NFL draft and played professionally for 5 seasons. while at the University of Georgia, Mohamed was named the 2008 overall team captain, selected as a first-team All-Southeastern Conference and Academic All-SEC member. She was a postdoctoral scientist in the Department of Neurology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center where she continued her work in the field of neurodegenerative disease. She was the recipient of a National Research Service Award Fellowship from the National Institutes of Health and has presented her work internationally. Having served as the Director of Neuroimaging Research for the Amen Clinics, she led the efforts in utilizing imaging technologies to understand the neurobiological correlates underlying psychiatric disorders. In this capacity, she oversaw many pioneering studies, including a clinical research trial investigating the long-term effects of repetitive subconcussive impacts in National Football League players, and developed a protocol to successfully reverse brain damage and improve cognitive health!
