Session 266: Am I My Therapist's Favorite Client? And Other Things You Might Be Wondering
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. The relationship we have with our therapists is unlike any other we have in our lives. They typically know lots about us while we usually only know a little about them. This is designed so that our emotional safety and needs are prioritized in the space but it can also lead to lots of questions that sometimes go unanswered. Joining me today for another one of our group chat conversations are my friends and colleagues Dr. Ayanna Abrams and Dr. Joy Beckwith, both psychologists in Atlanta, to answer some of the questions you might have about your therapist that you didn’t want to ask. During our conversation we chatted about whether we actually have favorite or funniest clients, how we handle seeing clients out publicly, what it means if you find yourself attracted to your therapist, and whether or not it’s ok to be friends with your therapist after you’re done with therapy. Session 265: An Oral History of Minority Mental Health Awareness Month
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. In 2008, the U.S. House of Representatives announced that July would be known as Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. This resolution would honor her work as an advocate for mental health awareness, particularly in the Black community. The goal for the month is to enhance public awareness of mental illness among minorities. In keeping with this sentiment and Mrs. Moore’s legacy, Therapy for Black Girls takes the opportunity to dig deeper into broadening the conversation around mental health and mental illness each year in July. To kick us off for our month-long commemoration and raise awareness, we’ve created an oral history detailing the creation of Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. In this week’s episode, I'm joined by Dr. Linda Wharton Boyd, the convener of the Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Task Force, and Albert R. Wynn, a former U.S. House of Representatives member. Dr. Boyd and Congressman Wynn were instrumental in creating Minority Mental Health Awareness Month after Bebe Moore Campbell’s passing in 2006. Our conversation explores the process of bringing Minority Mental Health Awareness Month to life, the impact Minority Mental Health Awareness Month has had over the years, and Bebe Moore Campbell’s continued legacy. Session 263: Children & The COVID-19 Vaccine
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. Although restrictions related to COVID 19 may have lessened around the country, the risk has not gone away. Vaccines have been an important part of protecting our health throughout the pandemic but so far they haven’t been available to children under the age of 5 which has left parents and caregivers in a very difficult position. Last week, the FDA authorized use of the vaccine in this age group so we can expect administration in this group to start soon but if you’re a parent or caregiver, you probably have lots of questions. Joining me this week to help answer some of these questions is board-certified pediatrician, Dr. Nina Ford Johnson. Dr. Johnson has been serving the families of the Mobile, Alabama area for 10 years. With her expertise in serving children of all ages Dr. Ford has been a go to voice for Black children’s health during the pandemic. Her recent national campaign “I’m a Mom First” is by moms and for moms who have concerns about vaccinating their children. Our conversation explores what’s in the COVID vaccine and how it works, breaking down common concerns and debunking myths around the vaccine, how to identify covid symptoms at home, and she shares advice to caregivers who might be struggling with the decision to have their children vaccinated. Session 259: Black Women & Digital Communities
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. What would the internet and social media be without Black women? Without the labor, brilliance, and talent of Black women, the Twitters and Tik Toks of the world wouldn’t hold the same cultural weight. Despite our continuous contributions to these sites, these same platforms are often disproportionately more harmful for us. Joining me today to discuss the ways we can build spaces that center our humanity is Bridget Todd, digital activist and host/creator of the There Are No Girls On the Internet podcast. Bridget and I chatted about what it looks like to create change online, the importance of Black women sharing their online experiences, how misinformation and conspiracy theories online negatively impact marginalized communities and creating a safer online ecosystem for everyone to participate in.
