Church history has documented the fateful journey for many in the Martin Willie Handcart companies. Their trek to Zion was full of hardships and deprivations. Most focus on the sacrifice that was required of these strong saints, most forget however the sanctifying power that was forged through this literal walk with God. Joseph and Maria Oborn were a part of those saints who consecrated all they had so their descendants could embrace fully the covenantal relationship with the Savior. Maria and her son were rescued in an angelic, miraculous fashion. We now hold that same torch in being an angelic rescuer, in saving the generations. Neil A. Maxwell is not a stranger to trials and afflictions. In a BYU Devotional in 1974, he testifies of the doctrine of becoming. He very eloquently teaches that the process of becoming more like the Savior is always through a path of trials and tests. We cannot become like Him unless we are willing to suffer and overcome. Elder Maxwell says, "...God loves us and, loving us, has placed us here to cope with challenges which he will place before us. I'm not sure we can always understand the implications of his love, because his love will call us at times to do things we may wonder about, and we may be confronted with circumstances we would rather not face. I believe with all my heart that because God loves us there are some particularized challenges he will deliver to each of us... And this will require us to accept with all our hearts-particularly your generation-the truth that there is divine design in each or our lives and that you have rendezvous to keep, individually and collectively." As part of the challenges that we are to overcome in these last days, Elder Maxwell reminds us that it is in walking through fire that we are sanctified. Jedidiah Grant was facing the end of his own mortality when he was gifted a glimpse of the world beyond. He was taught that death was not the end, that he would very soon be reunited with his lost loved ones, and most importantly, learned that all things in the heavens and earth denote that there is a God. Jedidiah was comforted by this new found knowledge. Heber C. Kimball shared this glorious vision with all of those who attended Jedidiah's funeral, bringing comfort to those who were mourning. The Logan Temple was dedicated on May 17, 1884 and was the second temple in this dispensation to be dedicated as a House of the Lord. There were many mighty miracles attending each dedication but there is one miracle that spanned continents. Henry Ballard, a bishop at the time was preparing for another dedicatory session, when his daughter Ellen brought him a Newspaper that contained genealogical information about friends and family who were ready to have their temple work done. "Messengers" had brought to Henry, through Ellen, this paper that was dated May 15, 1884 from Thatcham, England, Henry's home town. There is no physical way that this could have happened, but when the Lord is in relentless pursuit of saving the "one", miracles are the expectation. This story has inspired generations of descendants, some of who were M. Russell Ballard and Kay Groll. Both were inspired by this story. M. Russell Ballard verified this miracle by going to the Newbury News headquarters and found out that God had performed a most extraordinary miracle and Kay Groll was prompted to paint a depiction of this miraculous event that currently is displayed in the Logan Temple. This story told by M.
