The Happiness Warrior Eric North

Text us a comment or question!Let me ask you a personal question – are you happy?  I mean you’re listening to the Over 50 Health & Wellness podcast right now, so I’ll assume you’re at least a little bit happy right now.  But are you big-picture happy?  I suppose we should define happiness.  The dictionary states that happiness is a feeling of pleasure or contentment - or having a sense of confidence in or satisfaction with a person, arrangement, or situation.  And I suppose that definition works for us.  But we live in a time when unhappiness increasingly seems to be normalized.  The global pandemic, our current political divisiveness, and the 24/7 media and news barrage have made us fearful and anxious.  But I have to imagine that most of us want more happiness in our lives, we want pleasure and contentment, we want a sense of confidence and satisfaction.  And while we may not have much control over pandemics and politics, we do have control over how we react to these things.  Maybe what we need is a happiness warrior to help show us the way.My guest today is Eric North.  Eric, aka The Happiness Warrior – is on a mission to forge a new path in a changing and challenging world.  He wants to change the common narrative of fear, uncertainty, and unhappiness to a message of self-love and acceptance, to help lead us to living a life full of happiness.  In this episode Eric shares his personal story of becoming the Happiness Warrior and his 5 Core Happiness Warrior Values.  Below are the resources we discussed in this episode:Website – https://www.thehappinesswarrior1.com/Instagram – @happinesswarrior1Facebook -  @TheHappinessWarriorYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo1cLIYbSg_W0NaP56kbT0QStretchWorkz - https://www.stretchworkz.com/Performance Rejuvenation Center - https://www.prcindc.com/👉 Join The Silver Edge Collective today and start building a lean, strong, healthy body you love for the rest of your life! https://go.silveredgefitness.com/silver-edge-collective

The Godfather of Strength & Conditioning Dan John

Text us a comment or question!I’m a big fan of keeping things simple, of not over-complicating things.  I like to take complex concepts and study them and break them down into easy-to-understand chunks.  I remember a professor in college once telling me that if I couldn’t explain a concept to a child, that I didn’t fully understand that concept myself.  And this love for simplicity has served me well as I dive into the world of exercise and nutrition.  While nutritional science and human kinesiology can be vastly convoluted, what you should eat and how you should move isn’t – or at least it shouldn’t be.  But that’s not the message we hear.  We’re constantly bombarded with overly complicated messages on what we should eat, or what exercise program is ideal for fat loss, primarily by people trying to sell us something and preying on our instant gratification desires by promising fabulous results in an unrealistic time frame.  My guest today is basically the godfather of strength and conditioning and is a refreshing voice in today’s tangled world of fitness and diet fads.  Buckle up, we’re in for a fun ride as we explore how old-school concepts can – and should – be applied to today’s fast-paced culture. My guest today is Dan John.  Dan is a 63 year old author, speaker, coach, and strength athlete with 40 plus years of strength and conditioning experience and expertise.  In this episode Dan shares his own fitness journey as well as his thoughts on exactly how to get – and stay – strong.  He outlines high level life strategies as well as practical advice on aging well.  Connect with Dan:www.danjohn.netwww.danjohnuniversity.comPodcast - https://www.danjohnuniversity.com/podcastInstagram @coachdanjohnEmail questions to podcast@danjohnuniversity.comYouTube Channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrf_X-KnNGBy75IGsPuI7AQBooks (best bet is to search these on eBay):Sears Fitness for the Whole Family by Ted WilliamsBodybuilding & Self-Defense by Myles CallumParkinson’s Law by C. Coach's Corner - Does Diet Soda Help You Lose Weight?

Text us a comment or question! In this week’s edition of the Coach’s Corner I start out by talking about the new James Bond movie and how Daniel Craig gets into such great shape for his role as 007, and then spend a couple of minutes talking about what to do when you get off track from your nutrition or exercise program.  Then I share my thoughts on diet soda and whether swapping out regular for zero calorie soda can help you lose weight, and then wrap up with a few thoughts on the benefits of pushing yourself.  Below are the links to everything we discussed in today’s show.Time Stamps:1:59 – James Bond 10:27 – How to Get Back on Track13:23 – Does Diet Soda Help You Lose Weight?18:45 – Push YourselfHoliday Accountability Program – www.silveredgefitness.com/holidayT3 Website Discussing Daniel Craig Training - https://www.t3.com/us/features/ultimate-james-bond-daniel-craig-workoutSimon Waterson (Daniel Craig’s Trainer) - @simonwatersonperformanceNew JAMA Diet Soda Study - https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2784545👉 Join The Silver Edge Collective today and start building a lean, strong, healthy body you love for the rest of your life! https://go.silveredgefitness.com/silver-edge-collective

Seeing the Problem Clearly with Jake Steiner

Text us a comment or question! If you’ve listened to this show for any length of time you know I’m a huge proponent of being your own health advocate, of talking full responsibility and ownership for your health.  As one of my former guests Dr. Kien Vuu put it, you are your own best medicine.  I frequently rail against the common narrative of aging - that we naturally lose muscle and mobility as we age, that aches and pains come with the territory, that we can’t be strong, vital, and capable humans as we age.  But I have a confession to make.  I never once considered this philosophy when it came to my eyesight.  Somewhere in my forties I went from having 20/20 vision, to having a hard time reading the menu in dimly lit restaurants, to having to hold my paperbacks and iPhone a little further away to read.  And when the optometrist (in the mall) did my eye exam, he said, yep, time for glasses.  And when I questioned him about what happened, why I lived my entire life without glasses and now all of a sudden they were required, he sagely informed me that that’s just what happens, it’s a normal part of growing older.  And he wrote me a prescription for my first pair of progressive lenses.  And these weren’t cheap either, and by the time I got talked into sticking these progressive lenses into some fancy designer frames, I was out several hundred bucks.  Fast forward to a year or two later, and guess what?  My vision got worse, so I got a new prescription, and a new pair of glasses.  And that’s been my reality for the last 15 years or so.But here’s the thing… I never questioned it.  It never dawned on me to question that my vision – really that everyone’s vision – just naturally got worse as we age.  Until now.  Today’s guest might just turn everything you know – or thought you knew - about eyesight and aging upside down.My guest this week is Jake Steiner.  Jake is a bit of a maverick - living quasi off grid and semi-retired – he’s the creator of endmyopia.org where he helps people reduce or even end their dependence on corrective lenses.  Jake was diagnosed with -5-diopter nearsightedness as a child (which is pretty bad), and through intellectual curiosity, critical thinking and a good bit of trial and error, he corrected his vision back to 20/20 and no longer uses corrective lenses.  This was a fun and thought-provoking conversation, and really got me questioning my own beliefs.  If you or a loved one has poor vision, wears glasses, or like me just assumed that your eyesight goes starts going bad somewhere around midlife, you don’t want to miss this episode.Join us this week as Jake shares the real causes of most common vision problems, and what you can do to correct your vision and reduce – or eliminate – your dependence on corrective lenses. You can connect with Jake in the following ways:Website – www.endmyopia.orgFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/groups/endmyopiaYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/c/endmyopiaInstagram – @jakeysteiner👉 Join The Silver Edge Collective today and start building a lean, strong, healthy body you love for the rest of your life! https://go.silveredgefitness.com/silver-edge-collective

Busting Nutrition Myths with The Healthy Skeptic Dr. Robert J. Davis

Text us a comment or question! Are you skeptical about health and nutrition claims?  You should be.  There is no single source of truth when it comes nutrition, most general practice physicians have little to no training on the subject, we’re constantly being bombarded with conflicting new-studies-show type headlines from the media, shysters and hustlers are promising amazing weight loss success if you only buy their product, and on social media there are wars being waged over the healthiest way to eat – primarily the keto and plant based camps at this point and time.  Those of us over remember when we were told not to eat fat, because – well – it would make you fat.  And then along came Dr. Adkins who told us no, the villain isn’t fat, its carbs that are making us fat.  And what about the poor egg… it’s gone from being demonized as the culprit for raising our cholesterol to being a superfood. With all this noise, all this conflicting information, it’s no wonder many of us confused.  And it’s no wonder many of us are skeptical of current – or past – health advice.  Our guest today is going to help us negotiate our way through the labyrinth of misinformation, myths, and downright nutrition lies.My guest today is Dr. Robert J. Davis.  Robert - a.k.a. The Healthy Skeptic - is an award-winning health journalist whose work has appeared on CNN, PBS, WebMD, and in The Wall Street Journal. He is the author of four books on health, and he hosts the “Healthy Skeptic” video series, which dissects the science behind popular health claims. His most recent book is titled Supersized Lies: How Myths About Weight Loss Are Keeping Us Fat – and the Truth About What Really Works, and in this episode Robert guides us through the murky waters of nutritional myths, fallacies, misconceptions and outright lies.  Join us this week as Robert dispels some of the most common nutrition myths and then tells us what really works. You can connect with Robert here:Instagram - @healthyskeptFacebook - @RobertDavisHealthySkepticWe mentioned the following resources during the show:Website - www.healthyskeptic.comBook – Supersized Lies: How Myths About Weight Loss Are Keeping Us Fat – and the Truth About What Really Works Website - The Harvard Nutrition SourceWebsite - Nutrition Action👉 Join The Silver Edge Collective today and start building a lean, strong, healthy body you love for the rest of your life! https://go.silveredgefitness.com/silver-edge-collective

Make Your Next Chapter Your Best Chapter with Dr. Ellen Albertson

Text us a comment or question!A year or so ago I was sitting on the beach with half a dozen or so people.  And at age 56 at the time, I was the oldest in the group by at least a decade.  And somehow the conversation turned to - at what age did you peak?  And these folks – most of them in their late thirties or early forties – went around describing when they think they peaked.  The responses varied – some stating right before their first child, or when they were in college.  I can’t recall all of the responses, but I distinctly remember all of them were in the past.  And when it came my turn I remember telling them that I felt like I was peaking right now, and that I wasn’t sure that the best wasn’t still in front of me.  My guest today is Dr. Ellen Albertson.  Dr. Ellen – aka the Midlife Whisperer – is a midlife coach, speaker, author, and – in her own words – has more degrees than a thermometer, including a Masters in Nutrition and a PhD in Psychology.  In addition, she is a board certified health and wellness coach and Reiki Master.  Her mission is to help empower people at midlife to get unstuck and find the energy, confidence, and clarity to make their next chapter their best chapter.  In today’s episode we discuss the seven steps to rocking your midlife from Dr. Ellen’s upcoming book titled Rock Your Midlife: 7 Steps to Transform Yourself and Make Your Next Chapter Your Best Chapter, which will be available November ninth. You can connect with Dr. Ellen in the following ways:Dr. Ellen on Instagram – @the_midlife_whispererDr. Ellen’s Mastermind Facebook Group - www.facebook.com/groups/drellensmastermindDr. Ellen’s Website – www.drellenalbertson.com👉 Join The Silver Edge Collective today and start building a lean, strong, healthy body you love for the rest of your life! https://go.silveredgefitness.com/silver-edge-collective
