Seeing the Problem Clearly with Jake Steiner
Send us a textIf you’ve listened to this show for any length of time you know I’m a huge proponent of being your own health advocate, of talking full responsibility and ownership for your health. As one of my former guests Dr. Kien Vuu put it, you are your own best medicine. I frequently rail against the common narrative of aging - that we naturally lose muscle and mobility as we age, that aches and pains come with the territory, that we can’t be strong, vital, and capable humans as we age. But I have a confession to make. I never once considered this philosophy when it came to my eyesight. Somewhere in my forties I went from having 20/20 vision, to having a hard time reading the menu in dimly lit restaurants, to having to hold my paperbacks and iPhone a little further away to read. And when the optometrist (in the mall) did my eye exam, he said, yep, time for glasses. And when I questioned him about what happened, why I lived my entire life without glasses and now all of a sudden they were required, he sagely informed me that that’s just what happens, it’s a normal part of growing older. And he wrote me a prescription for my first pair of progressive lenses. And these weren’t cheap either, and by the time I got talked into sticking these progressive lenses into some fancy designer frames, I was out several hundred bucks. Fast forward to a year or two later, and guess what? My vision got worse, so I got a new prescription, and a new pair of glasses. And that’s been my reality for the last 15 years or so.But here’s the thing… I never questioned it. It never dawned on me to question that my vision – really that everyone’s vision – just naturally got worse as we age. Until now. Today’s guest might just turn everything you know – or thought you knew - about eyesight and aging upside down.My guest this week is Jake Steiner. Jake is a bit of a maverick - living quasi off grid and semi-retired – he’s the creator of endmyopia.org where he helps people reduce or even end their dependence on corrective lenses. Jake was diagnosed with -5-diopter nearsightedness as a child (which is pretty bad), and through intellectual curiosity, critical thinking and a good bit of trial and error, he corrected his vision back to 20/20 and no longer uses corrective lenses. This was a fun and thought-provoking conversation, and really got me questioning my own beliefs. If you or a loved one has poor vision, wears glasses, or like me just assumed that your eyesight goes starts going bad somewhere around midlife, you don’t want to miss this episode.Join us this week as Jake shares the real causes of most common vision problems, and what you can do to correct your vision and reduce – or eliminate – your dependence on corrective lenses. You can connect with Jake in the following ways:Website – www.endmyopia.orgFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/groups/endmyopiaYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/c/endmyopiaInstagram – @jakeysteiner👉 Join The Silver Edge Collective today and start building a lean, strong, healthy body you love for the rest of your life! https://go.silveredgefitness.com/silver-edge-collective

Busting Nutrition Myths with The Healthy Skeptic Dr. Robert J. Davis
Send us a textAre you skeptical about health and nutrition claims? You should be. There is no single source of truth when it comes nutrition, most general practice physicians have little to no training on the subject, we’re constantly being bombarded with conflicting new-studies-show type headlines from the media, shysters and hustlers are promising amazing weight loss success if you only buy their product, and on social media there are wars being waged over the healthiest way to eat – primarily the keto and plant based camps at this point and time. Those of us over remember when we were told not to eat fat, because – well – it would make you fat. And then along came Dr. Adkins who told us no, the villain isn’t fat, its carbs that are making us fat. And what about the poor egg… it’s gone from being demonized as the culprit for raising our cholesterol to being a superfood. With all this noise, all this conflicting information, it’s no wonder many of us confused. And it’s no wonder many of us are skeptical of current – or past – health advice. Our guest today is going to help us negotiate our way through the labyrinth of misinformation, myths, and downright nutrition lies.My guest today is Dr. Robert J. Davis. Robert - a.k.a. The Healthy Skeptic - is an award-winning health journalist whose work has appeared on CNN, PBS, WebMD, and in The Wall Street Journal. He is the author of four books on health, and he hosts the “Healthy Skeptic” video series, which dissects the science behind popular health claims. His most recent book is titled Supersized Lies: How Myths About Weight Loss Are Keeping Us Fat – and the Truth About What Really Works, and in this episode Robert guides us through the murky waters of nutritional myths, fallacies, misconceptions and outright lies. Coach's Corner - Now Is The Time To Put A Holiday Strategy In Place
Send us a textHere’s what we’re covering in today’s episode. I start off talking about my new Holiday Accountability offer that I’m launching today, and then I share a couple of news stories I read this week that I found interesting. Next I discuss what’s more important for weight loss – how much you eat versus what you eat (believe it or not there’s actually a war being waged on social media over this right now). Then I discuss the role of supplementation for folks over 50, including my current supplementation routine, and I wrap up by sharing my thoughts on why I’m so passionate about fitness. Make Your Next Chapter Your Best Chapter with Dr. Ellen Albertson
Send us a textA year or so ago I was sitting on the beach with half a dozen or so people. And at age 56 at the time, I was the oldest in the group by at least a decade. And somehow the conversation turned to - at what age did you peak? And these folks – most of them in their late thirties or early forties – went around describing when they think they peaked. The responses varied – some stating right before their first child, or when they were in college. I can’t recall all of the responses, but I distinctly remember all of them were in the past. And when it came my turn I remember telling them that I felt like I was peaking right now, and that I wasn’t sure that the best wasn’t still in front of me. My guest today is Dr. Ellen Albertson. Dr. Ellen – aka the Midlife Whisperer – is a midlife coach, speaker, author, and – in her own words – has more degrees than a thermometer, including a Masters in Nutrition and a PhD in Psychology. In addition, she is a board certified health and wellness coach and Reiki Master. Her mission is to help empower people at midlife to get unstuck and find the energy, confidence, and clarity to make their next chapter their best chapter. In today’s episode we discuss the seven steps to rocking your midlife from Dr. Ellen’s upcoming book titled Rock Your Midlife: 7 Steps to Transform Yourself and Make Your Next Chapter Your Best Chapter, which will be available November ninth. Adventure Has No Age Limit with Dr. Alyssa Kuhn
Send us a textWhen’s the last time you had an adventure? When is the last time you did something challenging and exciting? When is the last time that you went exploring? When’s the last time you took a risk, or did something bold? Many of us lose our sense of adventure as we grow older. Perhaps we have aches and pains that we didn’t have as a younger person, which inhibits us from adventuring. My guest today is fond of saying that adventure has no age limit and has dedicated her life to helping older men and women overcome aches and pains associated with arthritis, so they can live the adventurous lives of their dreams. My guest today is Dr. Alyssa Kuhn. Alyssa is a physical therapist, author, arthritis specialist, and founder of Keep the Adventure Alive, where her mission is to educate people that adventure is still possible with arthritis and that surgery is not inevitable! She is revolutionizing the way people think and feel about osteoarthritis. In this episode Alyssa discusses the different types of arthritis and their causes, as well as the “conventional wisdom” that suggests people with arthritis need to give up movement and resign themselves to a sedentary lifetime of managing pain through medication and potential surgeries. Alyssa then shares how there is hope for arthritis sufferers, and that adventure is not only possible, but recommended. You can connect with Alyssa in the following ways:Instagram – @adventurealiveYouTube Chanel - www.youtube.com/alyssaadventurealiveBook - Move Well Age Well: How to Rock the Later Years with Fitness and MindsetFacebook Group - www.facebook.com/groups/adventurealiveWebsite – www.keeptheadventurealive.comEmail - alyssa@keeptheadventurealive.com👉 Join The Silver Edge Collective today and start building a lean, strong, healthy body you love for the rest of your life! https://go.silveredgefitness.com/silver-edge-collective

(Very) Strong at 70 with Shelly Stettner
Send us a textIf I say to you, “She’s a strong woman,” what comes to mind? Maybe your first thought is that she’s emotionally strong, or mentally tough. What if I say, “She’s a strong 70 year old woman?” Now what comes to mind? You’re probably not thinking of physical strength. That simply doesn’t fit the common narrative for 70 year olds in our culture. But what if I told you that this woman can squat 250 pounds and deadlift 320 pounds and recently set 12 American powerlifting records? And then what if I went on to tell you that she’s just getting started, that she is in fact as strong and as energetic as she’s ever been in her entire life? My guest today is Shelly Stettner. Shelly is 70 year old national powerlifting champion. But she wasn’t always strong, or even particularly fit. She spent 30-ish years as a smoker, and occasionally hopped on and off the latest diet and exercise fads of the day. But then one day shortly before her 65th birthday she caught a look at herself in the mirror, and for the first time saw herself as a frail old lady. Through a fortunate series of events, she ended up in a gym that specializes in helping aging men and women get and stay strong. She learned to squat, deadlift and press, and over time she grew stronger… and fell in love with the process and the results, which eventually resulted in her entering – and dominating – powerlifting competitions. Challenging the Culture of Sitting with Dr. Stefan Zavalin
Send us a textThe typical American sits for an average of 13 hours a day, and the typical American office worker sits for up to 15 hours daily. That’s a lot of sitting! Sitting is actually a fairly new phenomenon – we’ve really only been sitting for about the last 200 years. Before that our natural resting position would have been a deep squat, a position that many of us over 50 find difficult to get into and out of, never mind resting for long periods of time in this position. Most of us have heard that too much sitting is bad for us. But just how much sitting is detrimental to our health? And how bad is it really? My guest today is Dr. Stefan Zavalin. Dr. Zavalin is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and work culture consultant working to ensure that people age well. He is the founder of the business Love to Move, where his mission is to change the culture of sitting in the workplace. In this episode, we’ll hear Dr. Zavalin’s personal story – spoiler alert, he went blind during his graduate studies – as well as the dangers of sitting. In this episode he lays out a timeline of the health dangers of sitting, starting with as little as 20 minutes of sitting. We then move on and talk about what we can specifically do to break this cycle – not just to sit less and move more, but to actually break the culture of sitting. This was a great episode, and really got me thinking about my own sitting habits. You can connect with Dr. Zavailn in the following ways:Instagram - @_lovetomove_Website – www.ltmmtl.com 👉 Join The Silver Edge Collective today and start building a lean, strong, healthy body you love for the rest of your life! https://go.silveredgefitness.com/silver-edge-collective

Muscle is the Organ of Longevity with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon
Send us a textHere in the United States, more than two-thirds of all adults are overweight or obese. And despite increasing awareness of the health risks associated with weight gain, the obesity epidemic continues to grow. In the US alone, an estimated 45 million people go on a diet each year, and we spend an average of $33 billion annually on weight loss products. Estimates of the cost of treating adult obesity here in the US range from 147 to 210 billion dollars each year. And this epidemic isn’t just affecting adults, approximately 20% of children and teenagers are now classified as obese, and that percentage is climbing. And we know that obesity increases our risk for other diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and certain types of cancers. So with all of our medical advancements and scientific understanding are we not able to stop – or even slow – the prevalence of obesity? What if obesity itself isn’t the actual problem in and of itself, but rather the symptom of a much greater problem? What is the problem isn’t so much that we’re over fat, but that we’re under muscled? What if we change our focus from obesity to skeletal muscle health – that is to muscle-centric medicine? My guest today is Dr. Gabrielle Lyon. Dr. Lyon helps motivate people of any age to reach their ideal weight and fullest health potential with the principles of muscle-centric medicine. She received her doctorate in osteopathic medicine and did her fellowship in geriatrics where she studied obesity medicine and nutritional science. Dr. Lyon has been published in Muscle & Fitness, Men’s Health, Women’s Health, and Harper's Bazar just to mention a few. In today’s show Dr. Lyon breaks down the critical role of nutrition and why muscle is the organ of longevity. In this episode she tells exactly how much protein aging people need, as well as the best sources of protein for us athletes of aging. And the answer may surprise you. This was a fantastic episode, and I personally took a ton of information away from this conversation.
