E187: Self-Care and Training Economics with Killian Hamilton

We return this week with the Canadian portion of the Pre-Script family, Killian Hamilton and Dr. Jordan Shallow, to discuss Killian’s realm of expertise in athlete skill acquisition  and Strength & Conditioning coaching.    Killian and Shallow unite in frustration about S&C coaches who attempt to match shapes in the weight room to those seen on the field of play, as well as why this method born of a lack of knowledge and understanding of how to properly apply this training to sport. Killian discusses his training methods as well as his upcoming Skill Acquisition course. We dive deep into why the applications of training strength for sport versus training strength for strength are so very different. Killian does a great job walking us through the “whys and hows” of using the weight room to increase the physiological and neurological “bank accounts” of his athletes to afford them more runway for better performance on game day.   Expect the usual rants, and be sure to check out K2 Coaching for more information on Killian and his services!   Killian’s Media: IG:@killian.hamilton Website: K2coaching.ca For other strength training, health, and injury prevention resources, check out our website, YouTube channel, and Instagram.  For more episodes, subscribe and tune in to our podcast. E186: Phil Smith: Nutrition 101

This week, the doc welcomes nutritional mastermind Phil Smith to the RX’D Radio. Phil is a sports nutrition coach and owner of SportsPlus Performance, who works with everyone -- elite athletes and weekend warriors alike -- to help them optimize their performance and reach their goals.   Shallow and Phil take a deep dive today into the biggest questions surrounding training and performance nutrition. Phil answers questions on some of the most controversial topics such as supplementation, protein intake and timing, the keto diet, hydration and much more. He talks us through some of his tactics for meal timing, fueling and recovery for high-level athletes and how these protocols may be unique for each sport application. They talk about carbohydrate sources, like Phil’s go-tos: sushi rice and bagels; they discuss both the methodology behind intense weight cuts made by fighters and strength athletes as well as  rehydration and refeed protocols both before and during competition. In conclusion, nutritional coaching protocols play a vital role to ensure that athletes show up on game day with the ability to express their full potential. Tune in for all the tips from one of the best in the business!   Phil’s Media: IG: @sportplus_performance  For other strength training, health, and injury prevention resources, check out our website, YouTube channel, and Instagram.  For more episodes, subscribe and tune in to our podcast. E185: James Macintosh: " I took a round to the chest"

This week we welcome James Macintosh to the podcast. In this episode, James brings us a serious megadose of perspective. As the first person on RX’D Radio to have ever been shot, James humbly describes to us of the roller coaster of events that has been his life, and shows us what it means to literally run into the face of danger.   James is a strength coach, powerlifting athlete, and former paramedic and firearms trafficker, from South Africa. James discusses what drove his career choice as a medical professional, and recounts a heart-wrenching, life-altering tale from his first 2 weeks on the job as a paramedic. We get a riveting account of his very young life as an armed paramedic tracking down rhino poachers in South Africa where he was shot point blank in the chest. After a labral tear injury, James decided to shift careers and became involved in the import and exportation of firearms, though this position and its lack of positive impact on society left him unfulfilled and conflicted. After a second surgical procedure on his labrum, James redirected his focus back to the realm of strength coaching to create positive change in the lives of his clients. TUNE IN FOR A RIDE as the guys discuss the true value of shared experience and community, explore the wild experiences of James’s young life, and reaffirm the perspective that “it can always be worse.”   James’ Media: IG: @coachjamesmac Website: www.performanceprogramming.net   For other strength training, health, and injury prevention resources, check out our website, YouTube channel, and Instagram.  For more episodes, subscribe and tune in to our podcast. E184: Progressions: Suck Less at Life and Lifting

The docs return this week to attack the topic of adaptation versus optimization, how these concepts vary with training age as well as the very critical role a coach plays in the success of an athlete. But first, the boys reminisce over some of their favorite past RX’D Radio episodes, and reflect on how the podcast has grown and evolved. As we stroll into the current episode, Jiunta discusses his considerations when writing a program for a new client. He emphasizes the importance of the first step -- determining the level and needs of that individual. The Jordans breakdown adaptation versus optimization, and when each is appropriate to program. The “systems” way of thinking about programming is criticized in favor of what Shallow identifies as an “indexing” method to identify the athlete’s needs and address them, efficiently. The boys connect over their frustrations towards coaches taking too much credit for their athlete’s success, as some coaches seem to forget that they are nothing without their client’s work and dedication. It is a coach’s job to understand the client and provide guidance by driving sufficient challenges that can produce the desired adaptations. At the end of the day, a coach’s career is made by the hard work of the athlete - so, know your role and play it, well. E183: QAnon and Men's Haircuts

The RX’D Radio Docs are in the office! Jiunta and Shallow return for some trademark banter on the current state of affairs in North America. From COVID haircuts to politics and conspiracy theories, buckle in for some unfiltered and entertaining reflection on the wild and crazy year that is 2020.     After warming us up with a very uncomfortable trip to the barbershop, Shallow meanders into his recent interest in modern conspiracy theories. Including references to Jeffrey Epstein, Donald Sterling and systemic racism, outlandish theories behind the lineage of the Canadian Prime Minister and Trump as a secret super hero -- this episode goes everywhere you might not expect! Jiunta shares his personal experience living in California during this challenging time for the state, and the duo dive into the impact of COVID 19 on California in particular as well as how the upcoming election may impact the state of the virus in the broader United States. Shallow and Jiunta reflect on conspiracy theories as the “opiate of the masses,” a kind of modern-day religion that fulfills the human need to believe in something greater. The boys also observe politics as “America’s favourite sport,” eloquently describing it using the Who’s Line Is It Anyway tagline - “Where the rules are made up and the points don’t matter.” Join in for the ride! E182: Goal Setting: You're Doing it Wrong

Jiunta and Shallow return this week to tackle the topic of goal setting as well as bring a uniquely interactive request to the audience. Starting off with a few thoughts on the strange times of COVID19, the boys jump into some podcast ranking experimentation with the listeners! Shallow requests your participation as he attempts to better understand how to hack the Itunes podcast rankings, comically auditing RX’D Radio reviews along the way. The duo then venture deep into what it really means to set and achieve a goal.    From the unwillingness to do the front-end work or reflect on failures, the question is posed as to whether or not the “goals” that an individual sets out to achieve are really his or her own. The Jordans walk us through barriers that they have faced in their own lives, daily habits they have changed to build a lifestyle for success, as well as some of Jiunta’s personal habits that keep his tunnel vision sharpened towards his goals today. We are reminded that working hard does not guarantee success, but that working with a plan is of the utmost importance. In a society so engulfed in social pressures, Jiunta highlights that your reactions to failure will always reveal your true intentions. Most importantly, Shallow reminds us that when it comes to failure - YOU are the only one standing between yourself and the success of the goals that you set out to achieve.    For other strength training, health, and injury prevention resources, check out our website, YouTube channel, and Instagram.   For more episodes, subscribe and tune in to our podcast. E181: Michael Tucker: SPRINTember. Building speed and speed culture

This week, we welcome Coach Michael Tucker to the podcast to dive deep into functional performance. Michael has 7 years of experience working with collegiate athletes at schools across the USA, and he is currently the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the football team at Villanova University. Mike’s experience has built him to be one of the top strength and conditioning coaches in sports applications. Today, Dr. Shallow and Coach Tucker travel in and out of the weeds to discuss sprint training and periodization, and how the latter is used to enhance an athlete’s performance on the field. After a brief introduction of Mike’s history, the conversation explores the entry-level sprinter and the common problems among athletes fresh on the collegiate turf. Mike walks us through some of his favourite drills to develop the technique of sprinting and how he thinks critically about developing programming for each athlete’s individual position on the field. From his “High to Low CNS” model and other methods to manipulate athlete constraints and periodization, Mike shows us just how deep the science rabbit hole can go. Not to fear, he does a fantastic job of relating concepts back to sports applications. Focused on building athletes to both perform and feel their best, Mike uses sprint training as a tool to accelerate his athletes’ performance. At the end of the day, we are reminded that context is key for any application and that for any athlete to be successful, it comes down to one main concept - run fast and rest. Check out Mike’s SPRINTember program at just-sprint.com to learn and develop the fundamentals of your sprint technique! E180: Blaine Mcconnell & Killian Hamilton: Cool Runnings and Human Performance ft Killian Hamilton

Today on RX’D Radio, Jordan Shallow and Killian Hamilton welcome Blaine McConnell to talk about the Olympic sport of Bobsledding. Blaine is a member of the USA National Bobsled team, a former Crossfit games athlete, and a family man currently residing in Iceland. He became a highly competitive athlete in an astoundingly short period of time, and is nothing less than the world’s strongest bobsledder!   Starting his career in football, Blaine picked up Crossfit to learn Olympic weightlifting and made his way to the Crossfit games with just 2 years of training. Blaine walks us through this journey in today’s conversation. After encouragement from friends to try out for the combine, Blaine’s impressive work ethic and freakish genetics landed him on the USA National Bobsled team in 2019, in his first year of training. Killian shares his own tale of the sled, and the two compare stories of their entries into the sport, the dangers of the sport, and the fears associated with those dangers. We get insight into what Blaine’s training regiment looks like, how strength training has contributed to his bobsled career, as well as his recovery protocols after a day of getting bashed around on the track. Tune in for riveting recounts of bobsled crashes, Killian’s unprepared first run, and Blaine’s Olympic goals and reality for the near future.   Blaine’s Media: IG: @blaine_mcconnell Youtube Training: Blaine McConnell   Killian’s Media: IG: @Killian.hamilton K2 Coaching: www.k2coaching.ca   For other strength training, health, and injury prevention resources, check out our website, YouTube channel, and Instagram.  For more episodes, subscribe and tune in to our podcast. E179: Awareness: The Art Of Paying Attention

The boys are back! Our regularly scheduled hosts are reunited this week to talk about awareness, and moreover the utter lack of it within today’s society. Shallow recounts multiple stories of his upbringing through rough neighbourhoods in Windsor, ON, and how those experiences helped to shape and elevate his awareness in everyday life. The Jordans discuss the role that evolution has played in today’s world -- particularly in places like the California Bay Area -- where life is safe, easy, and where The Top-of-the-Food-Chain is awarded by the merits of one’s bank account as opposed to one’s physical aptitude. Jiunta shares his opinions on the role that technology has played in our modern-day state of complacency, as well as how growing up in cold climates fosters necessary mental fortitude. The boys break down the concept of pain as an emotion, a drive state and perception, and chat about how the ability to “embrace the suck” has been lost on a softened society that collectively runs from life’s challenges.   Tune in for a dose of perspective, a reminder that character is best developed in the face of adversity, and as always, blunt and amusing analyses of the world as we know it.      For other strength training, health, and injury prevention resources, check out our website, YouTube channel, and Instagram.  For more episodes, subscribe and tune in to our podcast. E178: Kyle Traynor: Steel In The Walls: Building A Brand, Building a Business

This week we welcome back Kyle Traynor to the podcast to discuss his passion for business development and education. Kyle is the founder of Elite Vitality Mastery, an educational organization for business owners in the fitness industry that provides the knowledge required to attain personal potential and create financial freedom. He also hosts the podcast Pivotal Conversations where he provides free content around successful business development.         Kyle provides insight into the approach for Elite Vitality Mastery with a brief discussion of the 3 pillars of a successful business model: Cash Flow, Intelligence and Branding. Kyle relays the importance of learning how to keep money, not just making more of it, as most other “business coaches” in the industry tend to advise. The duo discuss the place of social media in business and how a large following does not necessarily equate to a large income. Jordan revisits his metaphor of the three-legged stool, in which a strong foundation for any business or personal plan involves standing on multiple, well developed principles. Kyle and Jordan chew on: the notion of developing a brand and its role in entrepreneurial success, how much “hard work” is really involved in building your business, and the personal attributes of adaptability, self-awareness and self criticism. Make sure to check out Kyle’s soon-to-be released Steel in the Walls Program to learn more!     Kyle’s Media Steel in the Walls Program Elitevitalitymastery.net Personal IG: @kylertraynor Elite Vitality Mastery: @elitevitalitymastery For other strength training, health, and injury prevention resources, check out our website, YouTube channel, and Instagram.  For more episodes, subscribe and tune in to our podcast.
