Chris Black [MDT Series] - Networking, Coaching & Rehab Skills For Therapists

For the first podcast episode of this special MDT series I caught up with top strength and conditioning coach Chris Black. Chris has a wealth of experience, particularly in rugby, most noticeably with the Leeds Rhinos and Yorkshire Carnegie. Having started his career at the Castleford Tigers, he worked his way through the ranks, from the academy to the first team and having reached the top in domestic sport he did the same in the International arena... Progressing to work with England Rugby League as their Head of Performance. He is now consulting with several athletes and sports teams, plus everyday people from all walks of life, helping them achieve their own fitness goals. With such an extensive background it is no surprise that Chris had so much to share on the podcast, including tips on how to be adaptable with your approach with different players or patients… How to network with others to progress your career and how you can learn from other sports and people to get better at what you do. Catch all this and much more in this episode! Enjoy the show! PS. Andy would love to hear your feedback on this podcast. Unsuccessful Job Or Placement Applications? Here's What You Are Doing Wrong

Have you ever sent an email asking for a placement or job and got turned down… That's if you even got a reply! Have you submitted your CV and applied for jobs but never heard anything back? It’s so demoralising because you know you could do a good job in the role, but you just need the chance to show this. This is a massive issue… Because as good as you might be, if nobody is going to give you that chance, then you may never fulfil your potential and get the job roles you really want. But, the great thing is that opening doors to your dream placement or job is actually much easier than you think, you just need to know how to play the game. If you can understand exactly what employers are looking for, it is easy to position yourself in the right away, to differentiate yourself from every other therapist vying for that same role, and get your foot in the door. Find out more in this week's podcast episode. Enjoy the show! PS. Andy would love to hear your feedback on this podcast. Your Dream Job - Are You On The Right Path?

Think of your career journey like a car journey. You want to get from A to B. A is where you are right now. B is where you want to get to (your dream job). Whatever your career goal, I truly believe you can achieve it, if you are willing to put some work in, and if you follow the right path. The hard work bit takes care itself. If you are willing to dedicate some time and effort in to your learning and development this is a great start. Following the right career path is not so easy… Especially when you might not know how to do this. It is not something you are taught how to do at University, so once you graduate you are left to try figure this out yourself. This is tough and those early set-backs, like those failed placement or job applications, are a big reason so many therapists give up on their dreams so early in their careers. This podcast will discuss the fastest way for you to progress your career, overcome the obstacles you are facing right now and start you on the right path towards your dream job. Enjoy the show! PS. It's WHAT You Know Not WHO You Know

It’s not what you know, it’s who you know? Right? Wrong! I hear this all the time from both students and new grads as a reason for their inability to get their foot in the door in a private clinic, the NHS and particularly those jobs in sport. ‘’They got that placement because they know the physio there…. Or they only got that job because so and so said something or helped them out…’’ Right place, right time, that kind of thing. I used to believe this myself. But it is a myth and the biggest pile of nonsense relating to the job market… And it is NOT the reason you can not get your foot in the door! In this special podcast episode I will explain what you need to know (literally) to overcome these career barriers and start moving the needle towards your dream therapy job. Enjoy the show! PS. Are You Making This Vital Mistake Stopping You Ever Achieving Your Dream Job?

No matter which way you want your career to go or what your dream job is… Making a fast start and ensuring you are heading in the right direction at the beginning of your career is vital. However, most new grads waste the first 3-5 years of their careers, making little progress, largely because they have been told this is ‘normal’ and it is ‘what everyone has to do.’ This is not true! Maybe you are a physio and like me, you were told that you should qualify get a job as a Band 5, go through your rotations for a few years, before deciding what area you want to work in. Or your a sports therapist or rehabber and your currently working in a clinic or sports club, but just mainly doing massage… You’ve been told you will start doing assessments and rehab soon, but 2 years later you are still waiting. The best thing I did back at Uni was to totally ignore the career advice I was given. And in this special podcast episode you will learn why you must also do the same if you ever want to achieve your dream role working in sport, private practice or the NHS. Enjoy the show! PS. Concussion - A Guide For New Grads Working In Sport

Concussion is a very talked about subject right now, especially in sport. Almost daily there is a story about a current athlete struggling with concussion or ex-athletes suffering long term problems, like dementia and Alzheimer's, that are starting to be linked to previous incidence of concussion. Despite their prevalence, most new grads do not know how to manage a concussion, largely because these injuries are not covered at University. But the ability to diagnose, educate and manage concussions... And to be able to safely know how and when to progressively grade athletes back to activity following a head injury, is a key skill you need if you want to work in sport. This special podcast episode will cover the main talking points around concussion... Help you understand how to rehab a athlete back to full fitness following a head injury... And help you learn how to protect yourself (and your players)and avoid heated touchline arguments with your players, or even the head coach, even before your player gets concussed. Enjoy the show! Shoulder Assessments - Avoid These 3 Vital Mistakes

The Acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) is a relatively simple joint. It has very little movement… It joins the clavicle or collarbone to the acromion (shoulder)… It has no direct muscles attachments and only two ligaments… Yet ACJ injuries can be tricky to manage. They can cause persistent symptoms and are at high risk of re-injury. They are also often misdiagnosed, usually as glenohumeral joint (GHJ) injury or even a muscular problem like an issue with the upper trap or levator scapulae. I made a big error as a new grad with an ‘ACJ’ injury with a pro rugby player (this was not good) and I’ll tell you all about this in this episode! I’ll also share with you 3 vital mistakes that so many students and new grad therapists make that might be stopping you finding the right shoulder diagnosis. Enjoy the show! PS. MCL Knee Injury Rehab - From The Bed To The Field

MCL (medial collateral ligament)injuries are very common but there are a lot of misconceptions about how to rehab these injuries. When do you start? Can you do exercises in the brace? What exercises do you do? How do you know when your athlete is ready to start running? How do you know when they are ready to rejoin full training or do contact work? If you want to know the answers to any or all of these questions then you are in the right place! In this podcast episode I will walk you through an MCL injury treatment plan, so you can avoid the most common knee injury rehab mistakes and see exactly what a real MCL rehab plan looks like, from start to finish. Where You Are Going WRONG With The Shoulder

The shoulder is more complicated in many ways than other joints like the knee or ankle. But that does not mean you can’t still get quick results… Results that stick and results that mean your patients symptoms don’t return just hours after they leave your clinic room. In this podcast episode I cover some super simple strategies you can use to help you better manage patients with shoulder pain… To organise your treatment sessions better for the shoulder (and any other injuries you treat)… So you can not only spend time on treatment… But you are not left rushing your rehab at the end of the session before your next patient is due to come in… And actually start getting results that are NOT just short lived and allow your patients to keep progressing session after session. Connect Before You Correct > The Key To Finding The Right Patient Diagnosis

Connect before you correct. This is so important to the effectiveness of your patient assessments and your ability to find the right patient diagnosis. You need your patients to tell you everything, like their injury history, past medical history, social and drug history, so you can get to the bottom of their problem… But they are not going to do this if they do not feel safe and comfortable in your presence. Regardless of what injury you are dealing with, you are always dealing with a person. Person first, injury second. Connect first…. Then you correct. You might think this is harder than it sounds, but it is easy to do, and so important to the effectiveness of your patient assessments… And I’ll show you exactly how to do this in this special podcast episode. Enjoy the show! PS. Andy would love to hear your feedback on this podcast. Please leave a review or get in touch at andy@newgradphysio.com and he will get right back to you.
