[Success Series] Katie Davis - Why Pelvic Rehab Is NOT Just For Women
On the final instalment of my success series I was joined on the podcast by Katie Davis, private practice and women's health physiotherapist.
Katie was a wealth of experience in the NHS and private sectors and is a specialist in women's health .
We spoke about many of the challenges Katie came up against as both a student and new grad and how she overcame these to progress her career to where it is now.
One of the biggest takeaways for sure in the podcast is how pelvic rehab, yoga and pilates can be used for ALL patients and athletes, not just women as has traditionally been thought.
It's a real eye opener and having listened to this episode you will understand just how you can incorporate such techniques into your own practice to get great results with any patient or athlete you work with.
Enjoy the show!

The New Grad Physio Podcast: [Success Series] Gareth Robinson - A Day In The Life Of A Top Sports Physio
On this episode I had another special guest as part of my success series as I was joined by Gareth Robinson, sports physiotherapist and current personal therapist to one of the world’s top golfers.
We recorded this podcast as Gareth was away in Abu Dhabi on the golf circuit and we delved into what life is like as a therapist travelling around the world working with a top golfer.
Prior to his current role Gareth has worked in professional football with Middlesborough and Darlington and rugby with Yorkshire Carnegie and the Leeds Rhinos.
He also has a vast amount of private practice experience which included managing a busy physiotherapy department in a private hospital.
He took a different route into therapy, having initially started training at college to be a bricklayer before realising he had a passion for something else.
Wherever Gareth has worked he has risen to the top, often joining clubs or jobs in lower ranked roles, before quickly progressing to the top roles.
He is without question one of the most passionate guests I have had on the podcast and it is clear he loves what he does for a job.
Gareth shares many great tips and advice that you will be able to take on board and help you as a therapy student or new grad, take your own first steps toward a successful career as a therapist.
Enjoy the show!

The New Grad Physio Podcast: 'Maximise Your Patient Results In Just 5 Minutes'
What is not measured is not managed.
This is 100% true.
But I’m not talking here about your patients assessments but actually your OWN assessment as a therapist.
It is so important that you frequently review your own practice to identify what you are good at…
And what areas of your practice you need to work on!
In this special podcast episode you will discover exactly how to do that, so you can be sure that any time, effort or invest this year on your CPD, is going to count…
And improve your skills as a new grad so much so, that you can provide a great service to your patients on par with, or even better than, much more experienced therapists.
And the task literally takes just 5 minutes!
Enjoy the show!

The New Grad Physio Podcast: 'Picking The Right Exercises For Your Patient'
Knowing where to start with a patients rehab programme may sometimes seem hard.
What exercises do you pick?
How many reps or sets should your patient do?
What should I be working on; strength, hypertrophy, power...?
Is bodyweight ok or should they use weights?
All these questions may confuse you and make you feel unsure about whether or not you have prescribed the right exercises for your patient.
These are all questions relating directly to rehab.
So you might think they are rehab problems.
But often they are NOT.
This podcast episode will explain why this is and why learning more rehab exercises will not actually help you prescribe better rehab.
You will also discover what you need to focus your attention on instead, to be confident you have prescribed the right rehab exercises for your patient, so they get better and so they stay on track with their rehab plan.
Enjoy the show!

The New Grad Physio Podcast: 'Hip Impingement - Are You Treating The Wrong Hip'
Hip pain can be tough to get a grip a hold of.
I’m sure you have seen those patients that seem to get better, sometimes quickly, but then just as quickly, they regress.
Sometimes getting rid of their symptoms seems to be the easy part, as no sooner do these symptoms go away, they come back as patients get back in the gym or playing sport.
The hip is also tricky because it can also be easily aggravated with things like sitting, driving and even sleeping, as well as more active movements like squatting, lunging and running.

It’s super simple and really obvious when you know it…
But hardly anyone is doing it!
This podcast episode will help you make simple sense of the hip, a complex joint in many ways...
And show you some easy strategies you can apply with your patients that will help you manage even tricky cases of hip pain.

The New Grad Physio Podcast: 'The MUST Know Ankle Syndesmosis Test'
One of the most common lower limb misdiagnoses made by new grad’s involves ankle syndesmosis injuries.
Often these injuries are mistaken for lateral ankle injuries like an ATFL or CFL ligament injury.
And this is a big issue…
As the management of syndesmosis injuries and lateral ankle injuries, is completely different!
It’s kind of funny that I have put together a podcast episode, advising new grads about how to not misdiagnose these types of problems…
Because I did exactly the same myself as a new grad!
One of my most memorable *%$@ ups as a newly qualified therapist was missing an ankle syndesmosis injury.
That experience left me wondering and questioning my knowledge and I set about learning everything I could about ankle syndesmosis injuries.
Over the last 10 + years, having managed dozens of these types of injuries, I have learnt more and more, and I hope this podcast helps you to better understand the ankle syndesmosis and especially syndesmosis special tests.
I will detail the ankle syndesmosis special test I used the most often and explain why this should always be the the first test you should use if you suspect an ankle syndesmosis injury.
Enjoy the show!

The New Grad Physio Podcast: 'Ruling Out Serious Injury At The Neck'
Neck pain patients with positive red flag symptoms, like pins and needles and weakness, used to get my head in a spin as a New Grad.
I used to worry that I would make this kind of patient worse...
Unsure whether or not I needed to refer this type of patient to someone else or if I was safe to start treating them.
I had a complex neck pain patient walk through my door recently, who had been in car accident and had quite significant neck pain, and presented with several red flags, alongside lower back pain and a concussion.
He is a complex case, but through a simple, structured assessment we were able to rule out any serious pathology…
And we were able to make a big change to his symptoms both in clinic and over the next few days in the very first session…
By doing some really simple things.
The same things that you could do with a similar patient if they walked in your clinic door tomorrow.
This podcast episode will walk you through how to tackle neck pain patients, how to rule out sinister pathology, so you can be confident your patient is ok for treatment and rehab and take away that fear that you get when dealing with spinal injury patients, like neck or lower back pain.
Enjoy the show!
