Why ‘Experience’ Is Not As Important As You Think
So many therapists think that you need to get years of experience to get consistent patient results and start progressing your career.
This is one of if not the biggest misconception for new grad physio’s.
If it was all about experience then how is it that new grads just a few months or years out of University get the same results, and often better results, than therapists that have 10+ years experience?
Or how is it that some therapists get top sports jobs or accelerate through the ranks in either the NHS or private practice settings and get roles way before anyone imagined…
All ahead of these so called ‘experienced’ therapists?
Listen to this week’s podcast to find out what you really need to do to start getting the patient results you really want and fast-track your career…
And not wait years and years to have to gain experience to get the same level of results!
Enjoy the show!

Knowing When It Is Safe To Return To Running
Making the decision to clear a patient or athlete for higher level activities like running or a return to sport can seem like a BIG call.
It is a big step in the rehab process but only if you haven't done the work beforehand, and your patient has not earned the right to progress to the higher levels of rehab.
Get this wrong and your patient will struggle, their symptoms will flare up and you may have to hold them back to let their symptoms settle...
Before you can get back into their rehab.
Get this wrong again and you may end up in that vicious cycle of flare up, rest, rehab, flare up, rest...
Which is highly frustrating for you and your patient, particularly if you can't put your finger on why this is happening.
In this week's podcast episode you will learn what patients and athletes really need in their rehab, and I'll give you a hint, it's not some fancy treatment technique or rehab exercise, it's actually much simpler than that...
But is something that if you do not nail, your patient will struggle when you try to push them through their later stages of rehab...
And even break down when you give them the green light to return to higher level activities like running and sport.
Enjoy the show!

Ankle Differential Diagnosis
The ankle is one of the most simple joints in the body and you see injuries at this joint all the time, however…
Many therapists often make a hash of their treatments and rehab, even with the most simple of ankle sprains.
One of the big issues I see is therapists missing important clues during the assessment.
During your assessment you need to gather all the important information from your patient to nail your diagnosis...
So you can be sure you are treating the right problem.
Because as good as your ankle treatments and rehab might be, if you are treating the wrong problem, the likelihood is your patient or player, will not get better.
Being able to differentially diagnose the ankle is the first step to a successful patient or player treatment plan.

5 Things I Wish I Knew When I First Graduated
What I do now is certainly very different to what I did when I first graduated.
The way I structure my patient assessments, plan rehab, talk to patients, the end stage rehab exercises and tests I use…
Pretty much everything I do is nothing like what I used to do as a new grad…
And certainly nothing like how I was taught at University!
11 years after graduating I have learnt a lot and continue to learn with every patient and athlete I work with.
I am still as passionate to get learn as I was back then, as I want to improve my skills as a therapist and continually strive to be the very best at what I do.
Looking back, most of the struggles and challenges I had as a new grad were unnecessary and if I had my time again I would do so much differently.
In this podcast you will discover 5 things I wish I had known when I first graduated that would have made my life so much easier…
And if you can get your head around these, they will make your life as new grad, or student, so much easier too!
Enjoy the show!

Communication, Difficult Questions & MDT Working With Top Sports Doc Jon Power [MDT Series]
In this special podcast episode I was joined by top Sports & Exercise Medicine (SEM) Consultant Dr Jon Power.
I have a pretty small circle of people that I seek and take advice from and Jon is top of the tree.
As a doctor, he has a wealth of experience in so many areas, from the NHS to private practice, football to rugby, he has a skill-set unrivalled, and as well as being an awesome SEM doctor he is also a top guy.
He currently works at the Football Association, and has worked with every England team, both on the men's and women's pathways, including both senior teams...
Alongside his private practice work, I have been very fortunate to work with Jon over the last 7 years with various different teams...
And he is without question one of the best practitioners I have ever worked with and he has had a massive influence on my career.
It was a pleasure to pick his brain for an hour and I finished the episode having learnt new things that I will take away and use in my practice...
And you will do the same!
Central to our discussion was MDT working, communication and managing difficult conversations with patients, players and coaches.
As good as your clinical skills might be if you can not nail these important things then you might struggle to get your patients, players and coaches to take on board and believe what you are saying!
Enjoy the show!

Are You Prepared Or Even Insured To Cover Sports Games?
Please do not put yourself, your players or your career at risk by covering sports games by not being qualified, or insured to do so.
So many therapists are standing at the side of a pitch, court, track or some other sports venue, covering sports games, when they should not be.
This is happening all over, in every sport, and the worst thing…
Most therapists do not even know the risks and that they should not be doing this.
Find out the two big things you need to know in this weeks podcast episode.
Enjoy the show!

Dr Sarah Whitehead [MDT Series] - Evidence Informed Practice For Therapists
You have heard about evidence based practice right?
But what about evidence ‘informed’ practice?
There is a big difference and this difference is key to getting the best results with the patients or athletes you work with.
This topic was the cornerstone of a recent conversation I had with Dr Sarah Whitehead, lecturer in Sport and Exercise Physiology at Leeds Beckett University and current Head of Athletic Performance and Development at Super League Netball side the Leeds Rhinos.
What you do as a practitioner should always be guided by the evidence base…
But with your patients, and particularly within sport, you need to be flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of those you are working with at that specific time.
You will learn how to do this and much more in this special guest episode.
Enjoy the show!
