Standing Toe Touch - Not Just A Lower Back Test!
When you use a standing forward flexion test or toe touch, what do you actually look for?
Pain?
Restriction?
Quality of movement?
Probably all the above…hopefully.
You’d probably use this type of test for a patient reporting lower back pain, maybe hip or thoracic pain (joint below and above) but…
Would you use this test for a patient with shoulder or Achilles pain or with patella tendinopathy?
Probably not I’m guessing, but you should…
100%.
You should assess the toe touch, and other big movements like trunk extension, side-flexion and rotation for EVERY patient you see.
Listen to this week's episode to find out exactly what you might be missing if you do not do these tests as part of your objective assessment...
And how these tests can often be the missing link and the reason for unsuccessful patient rehab!

3 Simple Ways To Get The Right Patient Diagnosis
Do you sometimes second guess yourself and lack confidence giving your patient a diagnosis?
If you are not sure what the patients problem is, it is almost impossible for you to plan and prescribe the right treatment techniques and rehab exercises.
Beyond the initial assessment, you should only be checking in with a few key markers (both subjective and objective) to see how your patient or athlete is progressing.
Despite this, so many students and new grads are still asking subjective questions or conducting objective assessment tests that should have been completed in that first session.
This happens because you put too much pressure on yourself and in most cases overcomplicate your subjective and objective assessments.
This week’s podcast will show you 3 simple things you can do to help you make sense of your patient assessments to give you the confidence in what you are doing...
And help you find the right patient diagnosis.
Enjoy the show!

Lessons Learned From England Rugby
Working with the England Rugby Union team, consulting at the FA, in professional Rugby League and Super League Netball…

You might think you need to change how you work within each different environment.

It is a real test, having to work with different athletes from different sports, elite professionals one day to a weekend warrior the next.
But one thing makes it easy.
Having a set method to assess, treat and rehab.
In this podcast episode I’ll explain why I use exactly the same method to treat every patient or athlete, regardless of what injury they have…
And how you can do the same to get great patient results, whether you work in private practice, elite sport or even the NHS.

The First Sign Your Skills Are Fading
As a new grad you will make mistakes.
But a mistake is only a mistake if you do it once.
It is not a mistake if you keep making the same error over and over.
So if you are continually making the same errors in your assessments…
Using treatment techniques that only give quick changes in symptoms but never stick…
Or find yourself using the same rehab exercises just because they helped some of your patients in the past, hoping they work, but not really knowing…
Making the same mistakes over and over then you need to work out why.
Because if you are not improving you are falling behind.
Listen to this week’s podcast episode to find out what other new grads are doing differently to get better patient results, despite having the same level of training and ‘experience’ as you.
Enjoy the show!

Treat The Man Not The Scan
MRI’s are thought as the ‘gold standard’ to make an accurate diagnosis but they might actually cause more problems than solutions!
One big thing with any imaging is to remember that a scan gives you an image of anatomy and not function.
Any investigation you use is just part of your assessment, in no way shape or form should it replace the tests you do with your patient or athlete in the clinic room.
If you blindly follow an MRI report without comparing it to the patient in front of you, you could find yourself over or under diagnosing an issue and then over or under treating an inaccurate pathology.
Listen to today’s podcast episode where I talk through a case study of a hamstring injury whereby the MRI report and how the player presented were totally different…
And what that meant for his treatment and rehab plan!
Enjoy the show!
