114 - James Hobart - How to be a Great Coach

James Hobart joins us on the Active Life Podcast today! . I can’t lie, I was a bit of a fanboy interviewing James. James has been around the CrossFit scene since 2009, competing, coaching athletes, and coaching coaches. His intentional experience has made James a worthy and valuable ambassador of the CrossFit brand, though unofficially as such in our interview today. . On today’s episode we cover the controversial topic of whether the CrossFit Level 1 seminar is an efficacious course to send people into the world to coach others. We actually don’t disagree on much, and we are left with more questions than answers. . We also talk about what James thinks it means to be a coach. How to #TurnPro at it, and what to do when you get there. Being the coach of coaches I asked James who helps him improve his skills. His answer is telling and you need to consider what it means for you. . Enjoy this interview with the baby face assasin, the fastest thrusters east of the Mississippi, the coach of coaches, James Hobart. . 113 - Business Talk - What Happened to the Coach

There was a time when “coach” meant something in the fitness world. Now it seems you can get your title at a weekend workshop. . You are a less effective version of your full time self if you do something part time. There should be no debate about this. It does not matter how much passion you have for a profession, if others share your passion but dedicate all of their energy into being incredible at it, they will be better than you. . The unfortunate landscape we find ourselves in is one where there is an abundance of part time coaching happening at gyms across the country. What makes this worse is that sometimes the part time coaches are the best ones in the building. It is important you understand that this is not only a compliment to the standout part timer, but also an indictment on the industry. . I don’t know about you but I don’t to be operated on by the construction worker who does operations when the full time doc needs time off. I wouldn’t train MMA a few hours a week and expect to beat the guy who trains 30 hours per week in a fight. And I wouldn’t be on my part time self over my full time self. . In this episode I discuss the problems we face and the opportunities for advancement that I see in the effort to professionalize the fitness coach.     REVIEW US!   If you love this podcast , please click HERE to leave a review. 112 - Kelly Starrett - What is Mobility

The man, the myth, the legend, Kelly Starrett joins us on the Active Life podcast today! . Kelly has been a CrossFit Affiliate owner for 14 years now and he has been influencing the culture of both athletes and fitness professionals ever since. . The author of best seller “becoming a supple leopard” and the creator of world renowned Mobility WOD, Kelly did such a good job creating awareness around movement that the term “Mobility” has become grossly overused, we discuss this on the show. . Also discussed on this episode is how Kelly things bands, balls, rollers, and modalities should be used as compared to how they are being used currently. He talks about what a perfect warm up should look like. And we jam on the idea that two people with different approaches can help the same person get to the same place through different paths. . It was truly an honor to be able to interview Kelly on the podcast as he has been a large influence in the space for so long. His work has made getting Active Life off the ground easier than it would have been without him. . Kelly can be found at: www.mobilitywod.com @mobilitywod   REVIEW US! 111 - EC Synkowski, Weekend Workshops, Nutrition, and the Truth

When I first took my CrossFit Level 1 in 2011, EC Synkowski was there on staff to humble me. I asked her for a proverbial handout and she put me in my place, we talk about that experience on today’s podcast. . This was a very fun conversation with a very smart, valuable, thoughtful, and well spoken person. It’s a conversation that selfishly I have been waiting seven years to have. We talk about a litany of topics on today’s episode. Among them are the efficacy of the CrossFit Level 1 as an entry to Coaching clients and opening a CrossFit Affiliate, what it means to be a coach, and how to write a program for groups. . EC owns her own company called Optimize Me Nutrition where she implements some very unique methods to support her clients who range from individuals to full gym communities. You are not going to want to miss what EC has to say. . 110 - Naudi Aguilar, Functional Patterns and Critical Thinking

Naudi Aguilar is a critical thinker’s critical thinker. On this episode Dr. Sean sits down with the founder of Functional Patterns and dives deep into the mind of the man who is taking it upon himself to fundamentally change fitness.   He wants to make such big changes to the landscape that Naudi doesn’t even really consider what he is doing to be fitness, but more biomechanical training. He bases his methodology, which aggressively rejects dogma and offends status quo, in his studies of how some of the greatest movers of all time do what they do.   Naudi believes that the essential movements that our entire physiological infrastructure is built around are ambulation and throwing. He believes that in order to do these two things well many other things need to be aligned and that seeking excellence in them is paramount to successful movement practice.   On this episode Naudi talks about his earliest influences, his process for deciphering movement efficiency, an invention he has recently patented, and even what he believes the word “sacrifice” means. The man is a deep thinker and this is an episode not to be missed.   Naudi can be found at: @themyoengineer @functionalpatterns www.functionalpatterns.com REVIEW US!   If you love this podcast , please click HERE to leave a review. 109 - Business Talk - Be Wanted, Not Needed

Have you ever heard someone say “I need this job”, and be happy about it? Didn’t think so. At Active Life one of our core values is to be wanted, not needed. This applies both to our clients and our staff. . We have enough redundancy that we don’t need any of our staff members. And that’s how we like it. We also have such rockstar staff members that none of them need Active Life. And that’s how we like it. . The way we see things is simple. “Want” is stronger than “need”. “Need” cries of desperation while “want” pounds its chest with pride. This episode is a deep dive into why wanting is the most powerful driver in the world and why at Active Life it’s the relationship we want with our incredible staff.   REVIEW US!
