TIP #66 – Managing Patient Complexities with Clin A/ Professor Dr Tony Au

Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. It’s your weekly mentoring session. Hosted by Graeme Pearson For us students and new grads, communication is an area that doesn’t get much attention, but can be a make or break moment when talking with patients. Do you ever wonder how you can explain concepts to patients in simple terms? What about explaining pros/cons or risks about certain procedures? How will they even trust you enough to let you do such a procedure? In this interview with Clinical Associate professor Dr. Tony Au, we talk about all things communication. Tony is a specialist prosthodontist in Sydney who deals with complex cases AND complex patients daily. Tony provides us with his top tips on how to deal with pushy patients, how to use analogies to help patients understand concepts, and how to BED a patient. You heard that right, how to BED a patient. If that doesn’t peak your interest, I don’t know what will. Dr Tony Au Tony completed his Bachelor of Dental Surgery at the University of Sydney, where he also received his specialist training in prosthodontics. He has been actively practicing as a prosthodondist for more than 30 years and is highly sought after by both patients and referring colleagues for his ability to solve even the most complex and challenging cosmetic and restorative problems. Tony lectures extensively locally and overseas at major conferences in the areas of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and facial pain, fixed and removable prosthodontics and oral implants. His well-recognised research has been published in several prominent international dental journals. Tony is a Clinical Associate Professor and continues to teach in the specialist training programme in prosthodontics at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Sydney. He is also a clinical mentor in the graduate diploma in oral implants at the same institution. His extensive experience, continuing embracing of the latest technological advances, calm and soothing approach to client care ensure you are in the best of hands for specialised restorative treatment. FEATURE #66 – [Re-Run] Dental Students to Graduates with Dr Rohan Krishnan

You’ve heard me say it before: Helping Dental Students Become Great Dentists This is our motto and our mission. So, it makes perfect sense to have Dr Rohan Krishnan on the podcast to share his views, experience and vision with the Dental Head Start community. Dr Krishnan has spent many years contributing to ADA NSW, initially on and then as chair of the Recent Graduate Committee and more recently as a Board Director. He is also on the board of Filling The Gap and runs his own private practice. Impressive, yet my interest was peaked when he shared his new project with the University of Sydney. Dr Krishnan has put together a course for Usyd students to help them with transitioning to private practice. Together with hand chosen people from his broad network of passionate, excellent colleagues, Rohan is able to make a difference at the coalface. And I truly hope this becomes an Australia and New Zealand University wide approach. With such aligned visions and missions, I could’ve spoken with Rohan for hours. For now, I hope you find his experiences and generous advice as useful and engaging as I did. In This Episode 9:16 – Rohan’s talks about his passion for learning and continually gaining knowledge.18:37 – The importance of personality when finding the best mentor for you. 24:50 – Rohan’s journey from associateship into practice ownership, and major differences he sees between the two roles.42:50 – What Rohan and the ADA recent graduate committee are doing for new dental graduates.53:32 – What pushes you to be more than just a clinician?1:01:54 – Rohan shares his advice to new grads surrounding the current industry conditions. So then how do you go about landing that position? What can you do to make sure that you’re The One? This is Part 1 of a three part grad series I did with Dr Jeff Kho where we talk about all things surrounding graduation and job hunting, making the most of our final year and how to be the ideal candidate – so keep an eye out for Part 2 and 3. David also did a much longer feature interview (#53 – Mentorship & CPD) with Dr Jeff early in the year where we hear his story and his experience training dental graduates and founding Australian Hands On Courses (AHC). In this episode Dr Jeff shares his golden tips on making a stellar first impression, being ‘the purple cow’ and the art of persistence. We talk about the importance of not just communicating but properly connecting with people, and how we can get better at it in a world where at times, we can be so disconnected. If you haven’t already, check out the teaser episode I did with Graeme to get to know us a bit better! Dr Jeffrey Kho Dr Jeffrey Kho is one of Dentistry’s Top Entrepreneurs. He graduated from the University of Queensland with Honours in 2005, he opened his first clinic at the age of 26 and has now started a total of five successful clinics throughout South East Queensland. TIP #63 – A Smarter Approach to CPD with Dr Kalyan Voruganti

Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. It’s your weekly mentoring session. Hosted by Dr Cigdem Kipel Dentists rely on private courses and seminars to fill the gaps in their knowledge and skill set beyond the bare basics taught at dental school.  These gaps are not small. Most experienced dentists report that the vast majority of treatments they perform (for example CEREC, orthodontics, implants, photography, digital dentistry) or skills they rely upon for success (for example leadership, communication, management) were not learned in dental school; they were learned almost exclusively through private CPD taken after graduation.  Fortunately, there are many CPD options on the table and additionally, they’re offered across increasingly flexible platforms; in person, online, interactive workshops, live demonstrations and more.  However most dentists have an ad-hoc approach to CPD with little consideration given to mapping out their education plans over their career. With the average cost of CPD annually in the thousands (or 10’s of thousands), Dr Kalyan Voruganti shares with us a more strategic approach to selecting and maximising CPD choices over time. Dr Kalyan Voruganti Kalyan qualified in 2005 with Merit from Cardiff University in the UK, as one of the top ten students in his year. Not long after graduating, he did further study and gained the prestigious Member of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS) in 2006 from the Royal College of surgeons of Edinburgh. FEATURE #65 – Dental Practitioner Support with Dr Murray Thomas and Anthony Denham

As a student and graduate it is common to feel stress when we think about our regulator. Yet this often comes from a misunderstanding of how the Dental Board of Australia and APHRA work and what there goals really are. This episode we are lucky enough to be chatting the the Chair of the Dental Board, Dr Murray Thomas. But the core message is not the regulator themselves but an initive they support. That is of course Dental Practitioner Support (www.dpsupport.org.au), a helpline for dental professionals and their families. This is funded by the DBA in an effort to support dentists however is a completely confidential and seperate. Mr Anthony Denham joined us on this podcast as the Program Director at Turning Point, the organisation running dental practitioner support. This was a great conversation about a critical topic. Because after all, we can’t look after others if we’re not looking after ourselves. Timestamps 1:19 – Why mental health is an important topic to Anthony.9:45 – Murray talks about why DPS is important to him.23:16 – Considerations for new graduates when you begin working and accessing support when complaints are made against you.30:17 – How to leverage the support that DPS provides.46:15 – Being open to conversations surrounding daily stressors around our work, and how to get help.54:06 – Mistakes Murray and Anthony see young dentists making. TIP #62 – Stock & Inventory Management with Dr Namita Gupta

Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. It’s your weekly mentoring session. Hosted by Dr Cigdem Kipel To practice dentistry, you need to have a lot of…stuff. Just open up a drawer or cabinet in any clinic and you’ll find hundreds of unique items that need to be ordered repeatedly from different suppliers. Some items are critical, some items expire, some are on special and some are on back-order. The whole ordering, inventory and stock management process in dental is time consuming, human-resource heavy and plain messy. Due to the sheer volume and variety of products that need to be ordered from multiple suppliers, all with their own e-portals, order forms or sales reps it’s no wonder things inevitably fall through the cracks. Just today our entire practice ran out of etch! As a multi-site practice owner, Dr Namita Gupta was no stranger to the pain points around ordering and stock management. She saw an opportunity to disrupt the wasteful and cumbersome old ways and co-founded Restoq, a centralised digital platform that streamlines and modernises inventory management for practices.  Dr Namita Gupta Co-Founder Restocq.com | Director Coastal Dental | Director Dental Sanctuary | Director Newcastle Dental Care With over 17 years of experience in the Dental Industry, Namita is an Implant and Cosmetic surgeon, educator and multi-business founder. Currently based in Sydney, Australia, she is Co-Founder of Restocq.com, a digital procurement solution for the medical and dental industries. Namita is also Co-Founder and principal of multiple greenfield dental practices. She is a Key Opinion Leader for Dental manufacturers, and is lecturer and examiner at the University of Sydney and The Implant Institute. Hosted by Dr Cigdem Kipel If you’ve ever thought about specialising in ortho, this is a must-listen podcast.  Meet Dr Katie Xu – a talented young orthodontist who shares with us exactly what it’s like to work as an ortho specialist and how it compares to general dentistry.  She walks us through a typical day in a busy ortho practice and highlights the systems and workflows that make it run like a well oiled machine. Lots of tips you can take straight to the general practice! Katie also talks about the more challenging aspect of her profession such as the significant amount of non-chairside hours spent on digital treatment planning and correspondence. It’s clear all worth it to her as evidenced by her passionate facebook posts educating GDPs on all things ortho. Dr Katie Xu Dr. Katie Xu obtained her general dentistry degree from the University of Melbourne in 2013, graduating with first-class honours. While there, she has received numerous scholarships and awards including the Cato Graduate Scholarship and the Des Crack Memorial Prize for the highest marks in Paediatric dentistry and Orthodontics.
