FEATURE #67 – Building Communities and the New Grad Experience with Dr Anthony Yammine and Dr Yasmin Samiee
Hosted by Erica Hwin
Dental Head Start has always been about helping dental students become great dentists, and over the years, we’ve interviewed dozens of successful dentists to hear their journeys and tips for younger dentists. However, with the end of the year looming up and grad season upon us, I thought it would be interesting to turn things around a little, and actually hear things from a new grad’s perspective. And I couldn’t think of anyone better to chat with than Anthony and Yasmin.
Anthony and Yasmin are finishing their first year out as dentists, but even from the get go as wide-eyed dental students, they were doing incredible things for the community. In their final year of dental school, they were the President and Secretary of the Sydney University Dental Association (SUDA) and are both now continuing to engage with the industry through their roles in the ADA NSW’s Recent Graduate and Advocacy committees.
This was such an insightful conversation hearing Anthony and Yasmin’s fresh perspective on their job hunting process especially as a couple, different mentorship styles and finding the right balance between having confidence as a new graduate dentist, but also understanding their limitations. This is a heart-warming episode full of words of encouragement that I think one that our student listeners in particular will really enjoy!
Timestamps
12:43 – Reflections on Anthony and Yasmin’s dental school experience.
27:32 – Yasmin discusses post graduate decisions and transition to private practice.
44:25 – Anthony talks about what mentorship looks like, and the different levels of mentorship.
56:46 – Management during your first few weeks in practice and instilling confidence in the new workplace.

Dr Anthony Yammine
Originally from the shores of Sydney, Anthony obtained both his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) and Bachelor of Science (Advanced) (Honours) degrees from the University of Sydney before making the move to Tamworth.
During his studies, Anthony was actively involved with the Sydney University Dental Association (SUDA), serving as President in his final year. Anthony was the recipient of many prestigious awards during dental school and was honoured to accept the Pierre Fauchard Academy Foundation Scholarship in 2018, and the David Stanley Hall Memorial Prize for Proficiency in Prosthetic Dentistry in his final year. Upon graduation, Anthony was a top five finalist for the Australian Dental Graduate of the Year Award.
Alongside his studies, Anthony published two research papers and has also been a demonstrator in head and neck anatomy for the past six years. After moving to Tamworth, Anthony maintains his involvement with the University, now as a lecturer in head and neck anatomy.
Dr Yasmin Samiee
Originally from Toronto, Canada, Yasmin enjoyed a few years in Sydney before relocating to Tamworth to join the Happy Smiles family. She is known for her warm demeanour and patience, and is interested in working with families and children.
While studying, Yasmin dedicated herself to improving the student experience through the Sydney University Dental Association, serving as an elected representative for four consecutive years. She was honoured to accept the Pierre Fauchard Academy Foundation Scholarship during her studies.
Outside dentistry, Yasmin loves singing, piano, and guitar and spending time with her partner and their cockatiel. She enjoys giving back to the community, having provided volunteer dental services through many charity organisations.

TIP #70 – Making the Most of Final Year with Dr Jeff Kho
Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today.
It’s your weekly mentoring session.
Hosted by Erica Hwin
We all know that one kid who never seems to study, is always playing games or out hitting the town, and yet still passes with flying colours and is everyone’s favourite friend.
Dental school is a rollercoaster. We’re learning the fundamentals of dentistry, figuring out what kinda dentist we want to be whilst trying to maintain a semblance of study-life balance. They say dental school is really just the beginnings of our journey and it all really starts the day we graduate, but what kind of things can we do now to really set us up on positive trajectory?
In this episode, Dr Jeff Kho reminisces on his days in dental school – and (surprise surprise!) how he wasn’t that superstar student. He talks about what he would do differently, knowing what he does now, and the stresses that in hindsight, he would’ve worried less about. We dive into the areas and disciplines that new grads don’t have as much experience in and what we can do to fill that gap in knowledge. Above all, we talk about the importance and value of investing in ourselves.
Dr Jeffrey Kho
Dr Jeffrey Kho is one of Dentistry’s Top Entrepreneurs. He graduated from the University of Queensland with Honours in 2005, he opened his first clinic at the age of 26 and has now started a total of five successful clinics throughout South East Queensland.
Aside from maintaining multiple private practices, Dr Kho also serves as a Key Opinion Leader and clinical advisor for several different companies. Dr Kho has over 10 years of experience with clear aligners and regularly trains dentists both nationally and internationally.
Dr Kho is also the founder of AHC Dental Education which runs courses that focuses on mastering the essentials of dentistry. These courses range from Oral Surgery and Endodontics to Communications and Tax and Law in Dentistry.
Having hired many graduates for his clinics over the years, Dr Kho understands the challenges new dentists go through when transitioning from dental school to working life. Dr Kho has a passion for educating and mentoring recent graduates and helping make their transition a seamless one.

Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today.
It’s your weekly mentoring session.
Tackling a TMD case may not be the first thing a new grad dentist , albeit, an experienced one, would be comfortable doing. When we think TMD, we tend to think this patient has problems outside the mouth and problems that are hard to pinpoint… Is it the jaw, the muscles, a cranial nerves, brain, ear, or even something more physological in nature? If you’ve come across patients like these, you know exactly what I’m talking about. This week I speak with Dr. Tony Au about his love for treating TMD patients, and ways YOU can start treating these cases, too. Tony’s practice is dedicated to treating patients with complex TMD issues, and he talks about what to lookout for to determine if a case would be within the scope of a general practitioner, or one that should be referred to a specialist. This is what Tony does day in, day out and you can hear the passion is his voice, so be like a sponge and soak up all this great information. Enjoy the episode!
Dr Tony Au
Tony completed his Bachelor of Dental Surgery at the University of Sydney, where he also received his specialist training in prosthodontics. He has been actively practicing as a prosthodondist for more than 30 years and is highly sought after by both patients and referring colleagues for his ability to solve even the most complex and challenging cosmetic and restorative problems.
Tony lectures extensively locally and overseas at major conferences in the areas of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and facial pain, fixed and removable prosthodontics and oral implants. His well-recognised research has been published in several prominent international dental journals.
Tony is a Clinical Associate Professor and continues to teach in the specialist training programme in prosthodontics at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Sydney. He is also a clinical mentor in the graduate diploma in oral implants at the same institution.
His extensive experience, continuing embracing of the latest technological advances, calm and soothing approach to client care ensure you are in the best of hands for specialised restorative treatment.

Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today.
It’s your weekly mentoring session.
Hosted by Graeme Pearson
For us students and new grads, communication is an area that doesn’t get much attention, but can be a make or break moment when talking with patients. Do you ever wonder how you can explain concepts to patients in simple terms? What about explaining pros/cons or risks about certain procedures? How will they even trust you enough to let you do such a procedure?
In this interview with Clinical Associate professor Dr. Tony Au, we talk about all things communication. Tony is a specialist prosthodontist in Sydney who deals with complex cases AND complex patients daily. Tony provides us with his top tips on how to deal with pushy patients, how to use analogies to help patients understand concepts, and how to BED a patient. You heard that right, how to BED a patient. If that doesn’t peak your interest, I don’t know what will.

FEATURE #66 – [Re-Run] Dental Students to Graduates with Dr Rohan Krishnan
You’ve heard me say it before:
Helping Dental Students Become Great Dentists
This is our motto and our mission. So, it makes perfect sense to have Dr Rohan Krishnan on the podcast to share his views, experience and vision with the Dental Head Start community.
Dr Krishnan has spent many years contributing to ADA NSW, initially on and then as chair of the Recent Graduate Committee and more recently as a Board Director. He is also on the board of Filling The Gap and runs his own private practice.
Impressive, yet my interest was peaked when he shared his new project with the University of Sydney. Dr Krishnan has put together a course for Usyd students to help them with transitioning to private practice. Together with hand chosen people from his broad network of passionate, excellent colleagues, Rohan is able to make a difference at the coalface. And I truly hope this becomes an Australia and New Zealand University wide approach.
With such aligned visions and missions, I could’ve spoken with Rohan for hours. For now, I hope you find his experiences and generous advice as useful and engaging as I did.
In This Episode
9:16 – Rohan’s talks about his passion for learning and continually gaining knowledge.18:37 – The importance of personality when finding the best mentor for you. 24:50 – Rohan’s journey from associateship into practice ownership, and major differences he sees between the two roles.42:50 – What Rohan and the ADA recent graduate committee are doing for new dental graduates.53:32 – What pushes you to be more than just a clinician?1:01:54 – Rohan shares his advice to new grads surrounding the current industry conditions.

So you’ve found a practice you love, a mentor you admire and an opportunity that you just don’t want to miss out on. So then how do you go about landing that position? What can you do to make sure that you’re The One?
This is Part 1 of a three part grad series I did with Dr Jeff Kho where we talk about all things surrounding graduation and job hunting, making the most of our final year and how to be the ideal candidate – so keep an eye out for Part 2 and 3. David also did a much longer feature interview (#53 – Mentorship & CPD) with Dr Jeff early in the year where we hear his story and his experience training dental graduates and founding Australian Hands On Courses (AHC).
In this episode Dr Jeff shares his golden tips on making a stellar first impression, being ‘the purple cow’ and the art of persistence. We talk about the importance of not just communicating but properly connecting with people, and how we can get better at it in a world where at times, we can be so disconnected.
If you haven’t already, check out the teaser episode I did with Graeme to get to know us a bit better!

TIP #63 – A Smarter Approach to CPD with Dr Kalyan Voruganti
Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today.
It’s your weekly mentoring session.
Hosted by Dr Cigdem Kipel
Dentists rely on private courses and seminars to fill the gaps in their knowledge and skill set beyond the bare basics taught at dental school.
These gaps are not small. Most experienced dentists report that the vast majority of treatments they perform (for example CEREC, orthodontics, implants, photography, digital dentistry) or skills they rely upon for success (for example leadership, communication, management) were not learned in dental school; they were learned almost exclusively through private CPD taken after graduation.
Fortunately, there are many CPD options on the table and additionally, they’re offered across increasingly flexible platforms; in person, online, interactive workshops, live demonstrations and more.
However most dentists have an ad-hoc approach to CPD with little consideration given to mapping out their education plans over their career. With the average cost of CPD annually in the thousands (or 10’s of thousands), Dr Kalyan Voruganti shares with us a more strategic approach to selecting and maximising CPD choices over time.
Dr Kalyan Voruganti
Kalyan qualified in 2005 with Merit from Cardiff University in the UK, as one of the top ten students in his year. Not long after graduating, he did further study and gained the prestigious Member of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS) in 2006 from the Royal College of surgeons of Edinburgh. With a thirst for learning, he has also completed a 2 year orthodontic diploma (with Dr Derek Mahony in 2017) which focuses on early interceptive orthodontics. This tries to prevent problems and treat them early. He has been placing Dental implants for almost 10 years and often mentors colleagues and graduate dentists to plan out their own cases. He has also worked in Liverpool Dental hospital and in Community specifically treating highly anxious patients His focus is making his patients’ dental experience as pleasant as possible and communicating very clearly to ensure patients understand their treatment.
He is actively involved in Dental associations as well as multiple Dental forums. Training younger Dentists is something Kalyan really enjoys. He has also completed a teaching certificate in 2017 at the University of Melbourne and has been involved in training Dental Therapists and Hygienists as well as general mentoring of younger Dentists with the General Dental Residency (GDR) scheme.
