As a serial CPD attendee and graduate of several university programs involving restorative and implant dentistry, the depth of his knowledge on this subject is exhaustive.  If you’ve ever had post-operative sensitivity or a debond after a bonding procedure, this is a must-listen episode. FEATURE #67 – Building Communities and the New Grad Experience with Dr Anthony Yammine and Dr Yasmin Samiee

Hosted by Erica Hwin Dental Head Start has always been about helping dental students become great dentists, and over the years, we’ve interviewed dozens of successful dentists to hear their journeys and tips for younger dentists. However, with the end of the year looming up and grad season upon us, I thought it would be interesting to turn things around a little, and actually hear things from a new grad’s perspective. And I couldn’t think of anyone better to chat with than Anthony and Yasmin. Anthony and Yasmin are finishing their first year out as dentists, but even from the get go as wide-eyed dental students, they were doing incredible things for the community. In their final year of dental school, they were the President and Secretary of the Sydney University Dental Association (SUDA) and are both now continuing to engage with the industry through their roles in the ADA NSW’s Recent Graduate and Advocacy committees. This was such an insightful conversation hearing Anthony and Yasmin’s fresh perspective on their job hunting process especially as a couple, different mentorship styles and finding the right balance between having confidence as a new graduate dentist, but also understanding their limitations. This is a heart-warming episode full of words of encouragement that I think one that our student listeners in particular will really enjoy! Timestamps 12:43 – Reflections on Anthony and Yasmin’s dental school experience. 27:32 – Yasmin discusses post graduate decisions and transition to private practice. 44:25 – Anthony talks about what mentorship looks like, and the different levels of mentorship. 56:46 – Management during your first few weeks in practice and instilling confidence in the new workplace. 1:08:13 – Anthony and Yasmin talk about their involvement outside of work. Dr Anthony Yammine Originally from the shores of Sydney, Anthony obtained both his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) and Bachelor of Science (Advanced) (Honours) degrees from the University of Sydney before making the move to Tamworth. During his studies, Anthony was actively involved with the Sydney University Dental Association (SUDA), serving as President in his final year. Anthony was the recipient of many prestigious awards during dental school and was honoured to accept the Pierre Fauchard Academy Foundation Scholarship in 2018, and the David Stanley Hall Memorial Prize for Proficiency in Prosthetic Dentistry in his final year. Upon graduation, Anthony was a top five finalist for the Australian Dental Graduate of the Year Award. Alongside his studies, Anthony published two research papers and has also been a demonstrator in head and neck anatomy for the past six years. After moving to Tamworth, Anthony maintains his involvement with the University, now as a lecturer in head and neck anatomy. Dr Yasmin Samiee Originally from Toronto, Canada, Yasmin enjoyed a few years in Sydney before relocating to Tamworth to join the Happy Smiles family. She is known for her warm demeanour and patience, and is interested in working with families and children. While studying, Yasmin dedicated herself to improving the student experience through the Sydney University Dental Association, serving as an elected representative for four consecutive years. She was honoured to accept the Pierre Fauchard Academy Foundation Scholarship during her studies.  Outside dentistry, Yasmin loves singing, piano, and guitar and spending time with her partner and their cockatiel. She enjoys giving back to the community, having provided volunteer dental services through many charity organisations. Welcome to What I Wish I Knew by Dental Head Start. This is a podcast where we learn from people that have been there, made the mistakes, learnt the lessons and have developed into the accomplished dental professionals they are today. It’s your weekly mentoring session. Hosted by Erica Hwin We all know that one kid who never seems to study, is always playing games or out hitting the town, and yet still passes with flying colours and is everyone’s favourite friend. Dental school is a rollercoaster. We’re learning the fundamentals of dentistry, figuring out what kinda dentist we want to be whilst trying to maintain a semblance of study-life balance. They say dental school is really just the beginnings of our journey and it all really starts the day we graduate, but what kind of things can we do now to really set us up on positive trajectory? In this episode, Dr Jeff Kho reminisces on his days in dental school – and (surprise surprise!) how he wasn’t that superstar student. He talks about what he would do differently, knowing what he does now, and the stresses that in hindsight, he would’ve worried less about. We dive into the areas and disciplines that new grads don’t have as much experience in and what we can do to fill that gap in knowledge. Above all, we talk about the importance and value of investing in ourselves. Dr Jeffrey Kho Dr Jeffrey Kho is one of Dentistry’s Top Entrepreneurs. He graduated from the University of Queensland with Honours in 2005, he opened his first clinic at the age of 26 and has now started a total of five successful clinics throughout South East Queensland. Aside from maintaining multiple private practices, Dr Kho also serves as a Key Opinion Leader and clinical advisor for several different companies. Dr Kho has over 10 years of experience with clear aligners and regularly trains dentists both nationally and internationally.  Dr Kho is also the founder of AHC Dental Education which runs courses that focuses on mastering the essentials of dentistry. These courses range from Oral Surgery and Endodontics to Communications and Tax and Law in Dentistry.  Having hired many graduates for his clinics over the years, Dr Kho understands the challenges new dentists go through when transitioning from dental school to working life.
