#56 Rory Sutherland - You Don't Make Sense & You Don't Know It: Here's Why

Part 1/2 Rory Sutherland is one of the most respected figures in Behavioural Science. He is also the Vice Chairman of Ogilvy Advertising, an author & a writer for The Spectator. He is a Cambridge Alumni. He penned one my favourite books Alchemy: The Power of Ideas That Don’t Make Sense We are all consumers. We interact with products and services every hour of every day, But we don’t all know the irrationalities embedded in behaviour that make us do the things we do. Especially the things that don’t make sense. Rory brings these into the light. Human behaviour is far less rational and sophisticated than we might claim. In this episode we speak about: Why rich people compete for art but not architecture Why Rory believes in “car free Sundays” Why McDonald’s touchscreens make you consume more calories Rory’s thoughts on Wetherspoons and his “mushy pea bombardment” Rory’s hypothetical “one behavioural reset” during lockdown &  the psychology of Uber maps and P*rn. It was a pleasure to share this part of a 2+ hour conversation with one of the most respected thinkers in his field! #53 - Nick Yarris - Part 2: Nick Yarris' FINAL Lessons from 22 Years on Death-Row

PART 2: Nick Yarris is an American writer who spent 22 years on death row in Pennsylvania after being wrongfully convicted of murder. Nick has given us his last podcast appearance ever - almost as a gift. Across these two episodes, he shares his last lessons from death-row. He has shared his story across national television outlets and even on Joe Rogan. We laughed, we cried and we laughed again. In light of the horrific experiences, Nick said that prison was like a fond memory to him - due to learning and practicing neuro-plasticity healing. "best thing" to happen to him. "I have a photograph of the street gang I was in when I was a teenager. There were 27 of us, 26 are dead now. "Death row saved my life. It taught me everything is a luxury to be treasured." He later said: "When I got out, I got a mantra from my mother, who sat me down and said that I had to be a polite and kind man from now on and that I had to be kind, otherwise it was a waste of coming home." Nick goes in depth on the struggle of being on death row telling of some very traumatic experiences and how he taught himself the skills to cope through them and the rest of his life. He then opens up about losing his career during covid as all public speaking opportunities across the globe came to a halt. He also provided us the deepest account of losing his child of SIDS. He ended by thanking listeners of this show and left with a message of love - as he hangs up the podcasting boots. What an honour. Thank you Nick. #50 - Gordon Belch - The Intersection Between Million Dollar Deals and Self-Care

This week my guest is Gordon Belch. Gordon is the co-founder of nutritious food brand vybey and Head of Finance at an international engineering firm. Out with being an entrepreneur, he is also deeply practiced in self optimisation through mindfulness, meditation and cold water therapy. He speaks on the cross-roads between entrepreneurialism and self-care. Together, we speak about: How entrepreneurialism is either learned or heritable but super-powered when they are combined; How childhoods signals of entrepreneurialism mature. Gordon bought and sold sweets on the playground How to turn a problem into ideation and subsequently creation - like Gordon did with vybey; The process of obtaining investment and how the incensed accountability scales dedication; How self-care and entrepreneurialism aren’t mutually exclusive and how Gordon believes the are married; How to find the best co-founder; How Gordon accidentally created culture capital that he could cash in for reward; And, what it’s like to be at the cusp of a million dollar deal. This one was a sentimental one to me as Gordon was one of my very first models. I speak about how my notion to break free from convention (and start this podcast) was an embryo of his mentoring.
