#50 | Getting Educated On Cortisone Injections With Dr. Alex Weber

In this episode Craig is joined by Dr. Alex Weber, a Los Angeles based orthopedic surgeon & sports medicine specialist as well as a team physician for the USC Trojans & The Los Angeles Kings. Topics from this discussion include defining exactly what are 'cortisone shots' and other biological solutions, understanding the role of these type of injections and how they work, learning about alternatives to corticosteroid injections, learning about the short term vs. long term benefits and risks as well as potential risks and side effects. We also cover various scenarios as to why you opt for an injection and when you should consider something else along with the role of injections in the general population vs. sports medicine.   Dr. Alexander Weber is a specialist in the field of orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine at USC. He is also an assistant professor of sports medicine in the USC department of orthopedic surgery. Dr. Weber has a keen interest in caring for athletes across the spectrum from youth football to collegiate hockey to professional baseball (Chicago White Sox) and basketball (Chicago Bulls). Currently, Dr. Weber serves as a team physician for the USC Trojans & Los Angeles Kings. Dr. Weber’s practice has an emphasis on arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee. He also has specialized training in all types of shoulder replacement. He has research and clinical interests in the treatment of the athlete’s hip and biologic solutions to cartilage restoration. He is also currently engaged in clinical and basic science research. #48 | Sports Therapy Role In Pro Basketball With Portland Trailblazers Dr. Jesse Elis

In this episode Craig is joined by Dr. Jesse Elis, the director of player health and performance for the Portland Trailblazers. Jesse leads all facets of the Trail Blazers medical and performance staff to provide preventative maintenance and rehabilitative health care to Trail Blazers players. Topics from this discussion include Jesse's story, how he positioned himself to take on a very unique and rare role in the NBA, his advice and what it takes for someone to pursue a medical career in pro sports, the origins and true definition of load management, the most common NBA injuries and how they're managed, and understanding the demands of basketball.   Jesse Elis has an extensive history in the realm of high-performance sports model and rehab to performance integration. He is the Director of Player Health and Performance for the Portland Trail Blazers. Elis leads all facets of the Trail Blazers medical and performance staff to collaboratively provide preventative maintenance and rehabilitative health care to Trail Blazers players. In addition, he works closely with the team’s athletic trainers, physicians, strength and conditioning specialists, nutritionists, psychologists and sport performance specialists to integrate rehabilitative concepts into performance training. Prior to Trail Blazers, he was the Director of Physical Therapy for EXOS and managed the rehab teams for all EXOS legacy sites. He received his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of North Dakota (2009) and a 3 year post-doctorate fellowship through Evidence in Motion. His credentials also consist of broad certifications in both sports and orthopedics along with having a CSCS designation.
