She began her career in retail fashion, which enabled her to support her young familywhile satisfying her need to be in the fashion industry. Before opening PLUMA, she had the privilege of working for Sara Blakely’s SPANX, an American intimate apparel company, managing her hometown store in Tampa Bay. The culture she experienced at the organization marked a pivotal point in Mary Lou’s development and gave her the confidence and motivation necessary to start her own business in 2020 during the global pandemic. She created a comfortable and private shopping experience for women in 2 by appointment-only Salon Suite locations in the Bay area. Ortiz also personally shopped for over 2,000 clients that still follow her today in her new venture as GM for Heads and Tails in Tampa.
