THE FYX 097: Is Your Group Fitness Class the Reason You're Not Losing Weight? The Pros and Cons with Mallory Marks
In this episode, Coach Krysta sits down with fellow fitness and nutrition Mallory Marks to talk all things group fitness. Mallory is the owner of Excelerate Athletics, an online health and fitness coaching company that has helped over 600 people ditch diet culture and learn the truth about nutrition and exercise. She has spent time in several different roles as a fitness professional, including in-person personal training, online coaching, and group fitness coaching. After training thousands of individuals over the years, Mallory has seen what works for the masses, what doesn’t, and what current narratives in the health and fitness space are holding people back. Mallory's credentials include NASM CPT, Precision Nutrition L1, and Functional Nutrition and Metabolism Specialization.
Both Krysta and Mallory work with clients who favor boutique fitness studio classes as their preferred fitness routines. Whether these class environments are properly designed to achieve results is often up for debate. The short answer? It depends. The long answer? Listen to the entire episode but here are a few highlights that Krysta and Mallory discuss:
- Group fitness classes are often marketed to women who are over exercising and under fueling their bodies, making them less optimal workout options for their overall health and goals of getting lean and toned
- Optimal resistance training requires adequate rest periods between sets while most group fitness classes have little to no rest periods throughout the workout
- If group fitness keeps you consistent in the gym, it's valuable
- The amount of variety involved to keep your workouts entertaining may be the exact reason you're not achieiving the body you desire
- Why carbs should be your friend if you partake in group fitness classes more than 2-3x per week

In this episode, Coach Krysta details her own mistakes in stopping working with a coach as soon as she reached her goal weights in the past. Today, Krysta always maintain her own nutrition coach for her nutrition and fitness because she's learned how that's helped her with accountability and maintaining her results.
We're giving you the exact blueprint that we teach our 1:1 clients to lose body fat, all while spending less time in the kitchen and continuing to enjoy the foods they love. We call phase 4 our FREEDOM phase. In this phase, we teach clients how to:
- transition out of a calorie deficit without the yo-yo of weight gain
- actually maintain the weight loss they've worked so hard to lose
- focus on their habits, and really see how these habits are now a part of their identities: this is the phase they prove to themselves--not just their coach--that they will show up differently for the long haul
- intentionally not track their food
- take diet breaks for their mental well being and to maintain a healthy relationship with food
- see food tracking as a tool that will always be available, but can be more or less important during specific seasons of their lives

THE FYX 092: If You Can Pack Your Bags, You Can Track Your Food
Spring break season is upon us! Travel plans are picking up and the weather is getting warmer. Hints of summer also bring us back to reality when it comes to those weight loss goals we set for ourselves in January. In today's episode, Coach Krysta is bringing you [or maybe BACK to] the basics: food tracking.
We liken food tracking to packing for a trip. Ideally, you wouldn't pack for a trip in the same morning you're catching your flight. So, then, why wait until each morning--or even in the moments right before each meal--to decide what to eat? Coach Krysta likens food tracking to packing your suitcase, and the idea that the more you plan in advance, the more efficient you'll be and the less likely you'll be to forget an item. She also shares a few tips about managing your food choices while traveling.
