#110 Hitha Palepu on Why You Should Be Betting on Female Founders

One of my favorite quotes from Curb Your Enthusiasm is when Larry David is having a boring conversation at a dinner party and he completely (and awkwardly) changes the conversation because  “I’m trying to elevate small talk to medium talk.” Like Larry, I’m not interested in small talk either and I want to introduce you to my guest this week who has been raising the bar on conversations happening on Instagram, Hitha Palepu. Hitha is a multi-hyphenate entrepreneur, investor, mom, and the author of How To Pack: Travel Smart For Any Trip. Not only is her resume impressive, but she has been bringing a new level of conversation to Instagram with her #5smartreads every weekday that is educational and informational on a broad range of topics from business to healthcare (and she'll be launching her podcast, 1 Smart Thing, next month!).   On this episode, we cover: How Hitha got into the pharma business (not exactly the easiest one to enter!) and how to win as a start-up in the healthcare industry Investing & Advising: How she got started & why she prefers to work with powerhouse female founders Networking: The importance of finding your tribe in business Her content creation evolution: from blogging to published author to bringing a fresh perspective to Instagram Why she walked away from a successful blog (& what’s next for her content!) Raise your hand if you’ve ever sat down to work and the next thing you know, it’s five hours later and you haven’t moved from your chair. #106 My Number One Business Focus in 2020

Happy New Year and welcome to 2020!  The new year is always a time of reflection and over the last few weeks, I’ve been looking back on 2019 and everything that has happened in my personal life and my business in the last year - the good, the bad, the ugly, and the incredible. I’ve seen so much growth across the board, and accomplished a lot, but not without some growing pains and bumps in the road.  As I’ve been scaling my business this year, I’ve had to make some hard decisions, have some tough conversations, and had to work some crazy (and frankly, unhealthy) hours… and it’s all been worth it. I love what I do - this is not a hobby, it’s my life. And one of the biggest themes I’ve noticed is that when you’re a business owner, it’s all about learning, applying, evaluating, and repeating.  I’ll be recording an episode where I dig deeper into the biggest lessons I’ve learned from these experiences (and also what I’ve learned in the last DECADE -  yes, it’s a new decade too!), but today, I want to share with you my vision for 2020, and how I see you having a part in it! On this solo episode, I share with you my biggest business focus in 2020 and what I’m most looking forward to this year. I know I’ve been teasing the Beta for the Beyond Influential Insiders Membership... and it’s finally here! I’ll dig into what that looks like, why the founding members are so important to me, and what I’ll be offering them as a special Thank You. Registration for the beta opens Monday, January 6th, but only for a limited time. Also, for this week’s episode, I created a new FREEBIE for you. #105 And the Most Popular Interview of 2019 Is…Lauryn Evarts Bosstick of The Skinny Confidential!

How is it almost 2020 already?! I wanted to give you an update - I have been hard at work creating the beta content for the Insiders membership. This time of year is always a time for reflection so my first training will be digging into the biggest business lessons I’ve learned this year and how I’m applying them in 2020.  And there were a lot... 2019 was a year of intense learning for me and I want to share those experiences with you and then give you the opportunity to ask questions in a Live Q&A. And don’t worry, I’m not shying away from sharing those lessons and hard times on the podcast, but this is the type of topic I can really dive deeper into inside the Beyond Influential Insiders community - this is the place where it will be easier to have conversations around it with each other.  As I mentioned, for the beta, there will also be a lot of me getting to know you and what you need so we can build this community together - it’s going to be a choose-your-own-adventure experience. This is a little bit of a spoiler alert, but here’s a teaser: my business coach, who really specializes in the unsexy but necessary side of business (things like legal, the operations, and hiring process type stuff), is putting together a training on “The 6 most common questions entrepreneurs ask” based on his experience. I’ve been working with him on it and I want the last two questions to come from this group because based on what you do and what you need, the answers to those questions change.  And you definitely don’t need (or have to want) to be an entrepreneur to get the benefit of this knowledge. Your personal brand is a business and you need to be building it no matter what you do, so all the content in there will be helpful. It really is dependent on you! Having a place to directly speak to you is a nonnegotiable for me in 2020 and I’m incredibly excited to get started! Again, if you want to get more information, you can find it HERE, and if you’re already signed up for the waitlist, keep an eye on your email because we will be starting very soon! And now for most popular interview of the year... it was #63 with Lauryn Evarts Bosstick of The Skinny Confidential on Evolving from Blogger to Businesswoman & How to Build an Empire on Authentic Influence. I wanted to repost this episode because if you haven’t heard it, you need to hear it and if you have heard it, it’s time to listen again before 2020. I’m going to leave in my original intro to the show because it all is still true. I’m so grateful for Lauryn’s friendship and support of my brand. Lauryn continues to one of my favorite examples of people who just understands brand and her audience.  And also, side note: Congratulations to her and her husband Michael (who I interviewed on Episode #62 - the Business of Podcasting: Monetization, Growth & Influencers) -  not just for their deserved success, but also for their exciting news - they are expecting a baby girl in the coming weeks! So congrats you two! I can’t wait to watch her brand evolve as she enters this new phase in her life and business because I know she’s going to navigate it in the most boss way possible.  So please enjoy the most popular Beyond Influential interview of 2019 with truly one of the masters of brand, Lauryn Evarts Bosstick.   To learn about the Beyond Influential Insiders, Click HERE! #104 Divya Gugnani of Wander Beauty On What it Takes to Grow a Global Brand & Build Businesses That Scale

I’m incredibly excited for this week’s episode - it’s one of my favorites to date. I recently had the opportunity to have a conversation with the CEO and co-founder of Wander Beauty, Divya Gugnani.  Divya is an overachiever’s overachiever. She not only has an Ivy League education with an MBA from Harvard, but she also has extensive experience in investment banking, private equity and venture capital. Oh, and she’s a serial entrepreneur. Wander beauty is her fourth  business (and the last one she built, she sold to QVC). Calling her a Renaissance woman is an understatement, and you’ll understand why after listening to this episode. Wander Beauty is a clean, cruelty-free beauty brand that is looking to streamline your beauty routine while not skimping on luxury.  Wander Beauty has already won several beauty awards including multiple Allure Best of Beauty Awards, and they are already starting to expand globally. Divya has so much wisdom to share that I totally geeked out and now she’s my current business girl crush. When I got on my call with her, the first thing I asked her is where people like her are hanging out.  This week’s episode of Beyond Influential is jam-packed with valuable insights, tips, and takeaways. I know that everyone can get something out of it. On this episode, we cover: The value of her education: Was it worth it? Whether entrepreneurs are born or made Her best business lessons from investment banking, private equity, and venture capital  Her transition to entrepreneurship and her biggest mistakes along the way Wander Beauty: The entire process from inception to getting to market to global expansion   Hiring & Creating an intentional culture in your business Work-life “balance” and being present in any situation & more!   To learn about the Beyond Influential Insiders, Click HERE! #103 Easy Holiday Marketing Tips For Any Business: Office Depot Expert Roundtable

This week’s episode is just in time for the holidays! A big point I always try to hammer home is that there isn’t any market that’s too saturated if you position yourself correctly, and using the online space to do it is one of the easiest ways to differentiate your brand, build awareness,  create brand loyalty, and  grow your bottom line! I had the honor of getting to do a very fun business roundtable in collaboration with Office Depot to discuss different online and traditional marketing tips, tactics, and strategies to really stand out and get holiday foot traffic in a time every business on earth feels like it’s competing for your attention and wallet. This episode is focused more on brick and mortar businesses, but it applies to ANY type of business. Business is business, no matter what form it takes, and I had the pleasure of getting to do this roundtable with two other incredible women who are experts in their areas. For this roundtable, I am joined by the fabulous Stacy Tuschl and Stephanie Schwartz:  Stacy, who you might remember from Ep. 80 & 81,  started her dance studio in 2002, scaled it to a second location, and has been helping other business owners do the same through her consulting business. She has built both her brick and mortar dance studios AND her online businesses into 7-figure businesses and is such an incredible resource for anyone growing their business. Her podcast is literally called The Foot Traffic podcast - so she was an obvious choice to discuss how to get foot traffic during the holidays. Stephanie Schwartz manages brand partnerships at Office Depot. Her experience in partnerships directly ties in with strategies all businesses should utilize through events, blogs, video and thought leadership. In this episode, we cover: How online personal branding leads to tangible results for small brick-and-mortar businesses (and all businesses!) How to come up with effective promotions to get people in the door Personal branding to grow your business: getting started & developing your voice Your Target Audience: Identifying the social media platforms they use & being aware of the local culture  Hashtags: How to create campaigns & how to use them to attract local customers  The content creation process and repurposing content strategically Optimizing your time by being intentional and smart about how you structure your schedule Why self-care and personal time is a non-negotiable & more!
