Austin Suggs
The Gospel Simplicity Podcast is centered around the conviction that the gospel is really good news. Here you will find conversations with Christians from various traditions as we seek to unpack the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel. Gospel Simplicity is known for ecumenical dialogue that is charitable and open to learning from people with whom you might disagree. We believe that God desires for his Church to be one, united in love for God and neighbor, and on mission to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ to all people.

What Did Paul Mean by "Works of the Law?" Old, New, and Early Perspectives (w/ Dr. Matthew J. Thomas)
This video is sponsored by Faithful Counseling. For 10% off your first month, use the link, http://www.faithfulcounseling.com/gos...What did Paul mean when he talked about "works of the law?" This question has divided interpreters for centuries, specifically in the Protestant discussion of sola fide. When Paul talks about being saved apart from works of the law, does he mean apart from ANY works, or apart from ceremonial works? This question not only caused division in the Reformation, but it has sparked debates between what has become known as the Old and New Perspectives on Paul. While this fight has been primarily exegetical, Dr. Matthew J. Thomas in his landmark work shifts the conversation to ask how did the earliest Christians understand works of the law. His answers are quite revealing, and if you're interested in Pauline studies, patristics, or just want to know what works of the law means, this is for you. History of the Filioque Controversy (w/ Dr. Ed Siecienski)
This video is sponsored by Faithful Counseling. For 10% off your first month, use the link: https://www.faithfulcounseling.com/gospelsimplicityIf you're like me, when you first heard about the filioque controversy, you might've been a bit perplexed as to how one Latin word could split the church in half. In this interview, I talk with Dr. Ed Siecienski, a leading expert on the history of the filioque to discuss the history of the controversy between Catholics and Orthodox on the procession of the Holy Spirit. Does the Spirit proceed from the Father or the Father AND the Son, and at the end of the day, does this even matter? For answers to these questions and more, be sure to tune in to this episode of Gospel Simplicity. Orthodox Ecclesiology and What that Means for Orthodox and Catholic Reunion (w/ Fr. Laurent Cleenewerck)
This video is sponsored by Faithful Counseling. For 10% off your first month, use the link, http://www.faithfulcounseling.com/gos...What is Orthodox Ecclesiology? For outsiders, it may seem that the Orthodox Church is structured the same way as the Catholic Church, just without a pope. However, in this video, Fr. Laurent Cleenewerck, author of His Broken Body, walks us through the Eucharistic Ecclesiology of the Orthodox Church. He contrasts this with the more institutional model of the Catholic Church, as well as exploring what this means for ecumenical work between Catholics and Orthodox. It's a fascinating conversation, and we talk about topics like what it would take for Catholics and Orthodox to reunite and whether or not the Orthodox need a pope for their church structure to work. If your interested in Orthodoxy, ecumenism, or ecclesiology in general, I think you'll really enjoy this. Fr. Learning to Love the Lord's Prayer (w/ Dr. Wesley Hill)
This video is sponsored by Faithful Counseling. For 10% off your first month, use the link, http://www.faithfulcounseling.com/gos...For many of us, the Lord's Prayer was the first prayer we ever learned. Some people have been praying it every day since they were young. However, sometimes familiarity can lead to boredom. Maybe for you the Lord's Prayer has just become dull. Maybe it's nothing more than mindless repetition. In this video, I talk with Dr. Wesley Hill about what we can learn from the Lord's Prayer, and how we might begin to love the Lord's Prayer again if we've become bored with it. The Lord's Prayer teaches us so much about God, and it's my hope that this video would give you a greater appreciation for the most famous of all Christian prayers. What the Bible ACTUALLY Teaches about Demons (w/ Dr. Michael Heiser)
This video is sponsored by Faithful Counseling. For 10% off your first month, use the link, http://www.faithfulcounseling.com/gos...When you hear the word demons, you most likely think of red, supernatural figures with horns and pitch forks, or at least, if you do, you're not alone. Here's the thing: nowhere does the Bible describe demons like that. Furthermore, we often talk of demons as fallen angels, but (spoiler alert), you're going to be hard-pressed to find that idea in the Bible as well. The truth is, a lot of what we believe about demons doesn't come from the Bible, and some of it flatly contradicts the Bible. This is what Dr. Michael Heiser and I discuss in this interview. So, what does the Bible teach about demons? Moreover, how should we allow belief in demons to affect our lives? If all this talk of demons sounds crazy to you, don't worry, we talk about that too. An Introduction to Divine Simplicity (w/ Fr. Gregory Pine)
What does it mean for God to be simple, and could someone please explain it to me in a simple way? These are questions that have been on my mind, and if you watch my videos, they might be things you're interested in as well. In this video, I talk with Fr. Gregory Pine, a Dominican priest and Ph. D. candidate as well as a frequent guest of both Pints with Aquinas and Godsplaining, about what the Catholic church means when it claims that God is simple and why the dogma of Divine Simplicity matters. I hope you enjoy this video and the ways in which Fr. Pine can take a complex topic and explain it in simple terms. Fr. An Introduction to Theosis (w/ Jay Dyer)
Hold up, did someone say we become GOD?? If you're like me, the first time you heard this, you were a bit concerned. As an evangelical, the concept of theosis can seem more than a bit foreign. In this video with Orthodox apologist Jay Dyer, we talk about what theosis is (and isn't) and in doing so we explore differences between Eastern and Western approaches to theology. The conversation includes discussion of the essence-energies distinction, monasticism, ways in which Protestants and Orthodox are similar (and different) and much more.
