The HEART of Protestant Theology (w/ Dr. Philip Cary)

This video is sponsored by Faithful Counseling. For 10% off your first month, use the link, http://www.faithfulcounseling.com/gospelsimplicityWhat is the core of Protestantism? In this video, I'm joined by Dr. Phillip Cary, author of the fantastic book, The Meaning of Protestant Theology: Luther, Augustine, and the Gospel that Gives Us Christ. In it he dives deeply into the theology of Martin Luther, St. Augustine, and their philosophical influences. In doing so, he shows how the heart of Protestant theology, for Luther at least, is union with Christ. Personally, union with Christ is one of my favorite theological topics, so I'm delighted to be sharing this with you. Iconography, Symbolism, and Meaning (w/ Jonathan Pageau)

This video is sponsored by Faithful Counseling. For 10% off your first month, use the link, http://www.faithfulcounseling.com/gospelsimplicityIn this video I'm joined by Orthodox Iconographer, podcaster, and public intellectual, Jonathan Pageau to explore iconography, symbolism, and meaning. We tackle questions about how to interpret ancient texts, avoiding chronological snobbery, and how to move past our time's crisis of meaning. We also explore some of Jonathan's personal story, how he got into iconography, and what led him to the Orthodox church. Of course, we also talked about patterns and how to read the Bible while paying attention to patterns as well as seeing patterns in the world. One of my favorite questions we explored was, what's the line between seeing patterns and conspiracy theories? Check out Jonathan's Work:https://www.youtube.com/user/pageaujonathanSupport Gospel Simplicity:Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/gospelsimplicityOne Time Donation: https://www.paypal.me/gospelsimplicityMerch: https://gospelsimplicity.creator-springFollow Gospel Simplicity on Social Media:Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/gospelsimplicityInstagram: http://www.instagram.com/gospelsimpli...Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/gsplsimplicitySupport the show

What Does the Catholic Church Teach about Justification? (w/ Jimmy Akin)

This video is sponsored by Faithful Counseling. For 10% off your first month, use the link, http://www.faithfulcounseling.com/gospelsimplicityWhat does the Catholic church teach when it comes to the topic of Justification? If you're familiar with a bit of church history, you know that justification, and specifically the doctrine of justification by faith alone, sola fide, was at the heart of the Reformation. Churches have split, anathemas have been pronounced, and no small amount of ink has been shed on the topic of Justification. Since the Second Vatican Council, Protestants and Catholics have been participating in dialogues to see if perhaps they can come together on this doctrine. Most famously, in 1999 the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification was signed between the Roman Catholic Church and the Lutheran World Federation. However, despite this progress, Catholics and Protestants remain divided, and many Protestants wonder what it is that Catholics teach about Justification. Do Catholics believe that we're justified by works? Can Catholics agree to the doctrine of justification by faith alone and what does all this talk about "merit" mean? In this interview, we tackle these questions and more as Jimmy Akin carefully guides us through a Catholic understanding of the doctrine of Justification. Jimmy Akin is a Senior Apologist at Catholic Answers. What Transubstantiation ACTUALLY Is (w/ Dr. Brett Salkeld)

Dr. Brett Salkeld, the Archdiocesan Theologian for Calgary and co-host of the Thinking Faith podcast, delves into the often-misunderstood concept of transubstantiation. He uncovers its historical roots, connecting Protestant theologians like Calvin and Luther with Catholic thought, showing they addressed similar issues. Salkeld emphasizes the need for ecumenical dialogue and understanding, arguing that this doctrine can unify rather than divide Christians. He clarifies the philosophical nuances of the Eucharist, advocating for a more compassionate approach to differing beliefs.

Moving Beyond Doubt and Disenchantment (w/ Dr. Richard Beck)

This video is sponsored by Faithful Counseling. For 10% off your first month, use the link, http://www.faithfulcounseling.com/gospelsimplicityDo you struggle with doubt? Or maybe, do you believe in God, but do you feel like this doesn't really change how you see the world? Even many Christians, according to Dr. Beck, live like atheists because we don't really expect God to show up in our lives. Gone are the days of seeing God at work all around us. Instead, now many of us, whether religious or not, live with a functionally materialistic, skeptical worldview. In this video, Dr. Richard Beck, Professor of Psychology talks about how to develop a more enchanted and dynamic faith, so that you can experience God in your daily life.Buy Dr. Beck's Book, Hunting Magic Eels: https://amzn.to/3z8dyPKCheck out Dr. Beck's blog: https://www.experimentaltheology.comAll things Gospel Simplicity: http://www.gospelsimplicity.comSupport Gospel Simplicity:Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/gospelsimplicityMerch: https://gospelsimplicity.creator-spring.comOne Time Donation: http://www.paypal.me/gospelsimplicityFollow Gospel Simplicity on Social Media:Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/gospelsimplicityInstagram: http://www.instagram.com/gospelsimplicityTwitter: http://www.twitter.com/gsplsimplicitySupport the show

What Did Paul Mean by "Works of the Law?" Old, New, and Early Perspectives (w/ Dr. Matthew J. Thomas)

This video is sponsored by Faithful Counseling. For 10% off your first month, use the link, http://www.faithfulcounseling.com/gos...What did Paul mean when he talked about "works of the law?" This question has divided interpreters for centuries, specifically in the Protestant discussion of sola fide. When Paul talks about being saved apart from works of the law, does he mean apart from ANY works, or apart from ceremonial works? This question not only caused division in the Reformation, but it has sparked debates between what has become known as the Old and New Perspectives on Paul. While this fight has been primarily exegetical, Dr. Matthew J. Thomas in his landmark work shifts the conversation to ask how did the earliest Christians understand works of the law. His answers are quite revealing, and if you're interested in Pauline studies, patristics, or just want to know what works of the law means, this is for you. History of the Filioque Controversy (w/ Dr. Ed Siecienski)

This video is sponsored by Faithful Counseling. For 10% off your first month, use the link: https://www.faithfulcounseling.com/gospelsimplicityIf you're like me, when you first heard about the filioque controversy, you might've been a bit perplexed as to how one Latin word could split the church in half. In this interview, I talk with Dr. Ed Siecienski, a leading expert on the history of the filioque to discuss the history of the controversy between Catholics and Orthodox on the procession of the Holy Spirit. Does the Spirit proceed from the Father or the Father AND the Son, and at the end of the day, does this even matter? Orthodox Ecclesiology and What that Means for Orthodox and Catholic Reunion (w/ Fr. Laurent Cleenewerck)

This video is sponsored by Faithful Counseling. For 10% off your first month, use the link, http://www.faithfulcounseling.com/gos...What is Orthodox Ecclesiology? For outsiders, it may seem that the Orthodox Church is structured the same way as the Catholic Church, just without a pope. However, in this video, Fr. Laurent Cleenewerck, author of His Broken Body, walks us through the Eucharistic Ecclesiology of the Orthodox Church. He contrasts this with the more institutional model of the Catholic Church, as well as exploring what this means for ecumenical work between Catholics and Orthodox. It's a fascinating conversation, and we talk about topics like what it would take for Catholics and Orthodox to reunite and whether or not the Orthodox need a pope for their church structure to work. If your interested in Orthodoxy, ecumenism, or ecclesiology in general, I think you'll really enjoy this. Fr. This video is sponsored by Faithful Counseling. For 10% off your first month, use the link, http://www.faithfulcounseling.com/gos...For many of us, the Lord's Prayer was the first prayer we ever learned. Some people have been praying it every day since they were young. However, sometimes familiarity can lead to boredom. Maybe for you the Lord's Prayer has just become dull. Maybe it's nothing more than mindless repetition. In this video, I talk with Dr. Wesley Hill about what we can learn from the Lord's Prayer, and how we might begin to love the Lord's Prayer again if we've become bored with it. The Lord's Prayer teaches us so much about God, and it's my hope that this video would give you a greater appreciation for the most famous of all Christian prayers.
