So What Do You Do? with Mary Jelkovsky on Evolving Ambition, Body Image, Niches & Creative Output
This week I spoke with author Mary Jelkovsky. Mary asked me on her podcast a couple months ago and when we recorded that interview we recorded one for Let It Out too. In the first half of this episode, Mary and I talk about how our difference in age impacts how we each use social media and technology, including how at only 16 she became an influencer as a fitness model, which led her to disordered eating, into recovery, and eventually to the work she’s doing now to help women accept their bodies and let go of food and body obsession. She’s written a best-selling book and accompanying journal, and over the past 5 years, she's been featured in TEDx, Teen Vogue, Shape, and Health Magazine. She also hosts the podcast Mary’s Cup of Tea, and the second half of this episode is part of my interview as a guest there. We talk about how orthorexia led me to create a blog that became a podcast about wellness, and how I eventually transitioned it beyond that niche to what it is now. We also cover the mindset (and fears) of a freelancer and within creative projects, the importance of evolution, and tools and resources I’ve found useful. I loved meeting her and these conversations, and hope to have many more—let us know if you listen. Show Notes:- **My one-on-one CREATIVE CLINIC is open with a few spots left! Anjie Cho Moves My Furniture & Makes It All Better
In lieu of an interview, this episode is a recording of a session I had with interior designer, architect, author, and feng shui consultant, Anjie Cho. Recorded in person at my apartment, Anjie gives me a typical feng shui and design consultation as if I were a new client.Sessions always start with the question: what are your three wishes for your life? The wishes become a jumping-off point to find interior adjustments in the nine different home areas, which in my case were mostly related to increasing my assertiveness, connection, defined relationships, and creativity. You’ll hear what a session is like as well get some general interior insights from her you can use, but most of all you’ll hear a loose (too?) personal conversation between two old friends. Through answering her consult questions, I end up telling her everything that’s up in the air in my little weird life from dating to money…which I almost cut out but left it all in and hope at least one of you finds it entertaining. But mostly for context for the gentle, sweet, and spot-on advice she gives like only a friend who has known you for 10 years can. Then we move all of my furniture which honestly made me feel way better. This is Anjie’s 4th appearance on this podcast—since 2014 she’s advised me on each apartments I’ve lived in two in Michigan, two in New York, and now this one in LA. We tell how we met through our dear @stiggly and she tells how she got into design through her love of art and portrait photography. Since 1999, she has been designing spaces informed by the ancient practice of feng shui and tailored to each individual’s needs, which you’ll get a taste of in this. She’s been featured everywhere from the New York Times to Domino Magazine; she’s a New York State registered architect, co-founder of the Mindful Design Feng Shui School, and author of the book Holistic Spaces and the forthcoming Mindful Homes, which we should all preorder a hard copy of, it is useful.Let us know if you listened to this… AND if you have any interior design or feng shui questions about your space, leave them here and Anjie will be taking over this account soon to answer in the comments of this post on Instagram and Anjie and I will answer if we can! : )

Listen to This: Talk Easy
I’m sharing a special preview of a podcast I’ve been loving for years, Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso, from Pushkin Industries. Talk Easy is a weekly interview podcast, where writer Sam Fragoso invites actors, writers, activists, and musicians to come to the table and speak from the heart in ways you probably haven't heard from them before. Driven by curiosity, he’s had revealing conversations with everyone from Ethan Hawke to Cate Blanchett to Pedro Pascal to Questlove. In this preview, he sits down with actor, writer, and director Lake Bell, who shares her path to creating Inside Voice, her new audiobook. She describes growing up in Manhattan in the 80s, chronicling the world around her by tape recorder, and capturing those experiences into her 2013 film, "In a World..." And she shares how her voice has transformed in the past decade, the phenomenon of the 'sexy baby voice,' and the characters she hopes to discover in years to come. You can hear the full episode, and more from Talk Easy, at https://podcasts.pushkin.fm/talkeasypod?sid=out. PS Happy Holidays! we'll be back with long form episodes soon and in the meantime catch up, dive into the archive, listen to music, talk to each other, or talk to me. thank you for being here.

We're Spiraling: Money Shame, Comparison, Marriage, Kids & Different Timelines
Instead of an interview today is a mashup of two episodes of Spiraling, the podcast I co-host with Serena Wolf about mental health. We started in 2019 where I’d walk to her apartment once a week and we’d talk and eventually started recording our conversations around anxiety. It’s been 4 years and now we live on opposite coasts, but we still record our conversations. The first half is from the middle of the current season, where we discuss navigating different timelines and expectations both from ourselves and from society. I picked this episode because I got messages from people saying it was comforting to hear where I am with being a single person navigating a freelance career so, even though it makes me cringe a little, I’m sharing it here too. The format of Spiraling is that Serena and I both share our “spirals” for the week, try to help each other talk through them, then discuss a topic: the one you’re about to hear is on comparison, money, the decision to have kids, and aging. All of this sounds real heavy but we’re mostly laughing and we always end with a segment called "high, higher, highest" where we share three highs of the week. The second half of this mashup is our goofy reintroduction episode where we each share favorite books, drinks, songs and more. Show notes:- To hear the full episodes of Spiraling these excerpts came from, listen to the first episode of Season 4 here, the fourth episode here, and the full archive here- Favorite products mentioned:Sea Clear probioticKatie's infusion container - Books mentioned:Katie's rec: The Book of Laughter and ForgettingSerena's Recs: The Idea of You and An Absolutely Remarkable Thing- Other codes to use to support the show:Ozma code: Katie15

Anna Fusco on Meeting Lord Cowboy, Community, Taking the Pressure Off & Much More
This week on the program is artist Anna Fusco, who you might know as Lord Cowboy. Anna works across drawing, writing, and digital illustration. She’s done some big drawings, has a really cool poster and print shop, and writes a reader-supported newsletter called "Unsupervised" that is read by thousands of people each month, including me. She currently lives on the central coast of California and we caught up over zoom a few weeks ago. We discussed everything from over-processing experiences, care vs. worry, the accountability that comes from living in community, to how she met “Lord Cowboy” and ended up living where she is now. Anna and I connected after my friend Christine sent me one of her posters. It is one that I especially loved because it articulated something we all crave in some degree: connection and community. I’m far from the only person who resonated with the poster and in this Anna shared where she was when she wrote the words. Anna is so special and I loved speaking with her as much as I love her painting, drawings, and her entire online shop. Let us know if you listen. Charm Attack with Leona Naess
This week I spoke with singer-songwriter Leona Naess who recently released an album titled Brood X after a family of periodic cicadas that, like her, reemerged in 2022 after 17 years underground. In the years since she released her last album in 2004, Naess had lived her own life “underground”— nesting, becoming a mom, and moving through the grief of losing both parents. Released in 2021, Brood X has themes of reemergence and rediscovery. In this conversation we talk about how she got into the music industry young with her hit song Charm Attack, the music industry in the 90s, processing grief, being cool vs. warm, and more.
