201 | Anula Maiberg of Sixth Street Pilates on the potato method, impostor syndrome, rethinking 'body diversity' and more!
A few years ago I realized my body is something called hypermobile meaning my joints easily move beyond the normal range expected. While I loved teaching and practicing yoga, I wanted to try something for more strengthening. My best friend at the time was training to become a pilates instructor giving me the ideal opportunity to become her Guinea pig and explore pilates. Turns out I loved it. When I moved to NYC I hoped I'd find a studio I loved. Luckily, I stumbled upon Six Street Pilates and discovered the very cool owner Anula. From her style, to her instagram, to her philosophy and teaching I knew I wanted to have her on the podcast, attend her all her classes, and become her friend. We struggled to find a time to sit down to record this between her travel schedule and mine this fall so eventually we settled on recording this late one evening. We're both pretty sleepy and loopy by the end which makes the episode weird and special. We discuss community, being 'familiar strangers,' in-person connections, the Potato Method, what pilates is, and it’s history, the combination of pilates and art, impostor syndrome, feeling bad and that being okay, depression, the problem with the term ‘body diversity,’ and so much more.

200 | Sahara Rose Ketabi on Ayurveda, Writing, Purpose and Dharma, Manifestation, Meeting Deepak Chopra + more
Two-hundred episodes of this podcast seems like a huge milestone I'm pretty proud of. We've discussed so much on this podcast including sex and using vaginal jade eggs, our periods, birth control and it's impacts on the body. We've discussed relationships including everything from dating, to friendship to parenting, to motherhood to divorce. We've talked about wellness all over the spectrum including, aging, beauty, fitness, meditation, yoga as well as cooking. We've covered body image at length including intuitive eating and emotional eating. We've discussed mental wellness including the importance of community. We've also spoken about creativity with actors, actresses, writers, directors, musicians, and comedians. This episode covers a little bit of all of those topics. This week's conversation with guest Sahara Rose is a long one, yet I never wanted it to end (we even had to take a bathroom break in the middle). We take a deep dive intro her wellness speciality: Ayurveda (she literally wrote the Idiot's Guide to Ayurveda), food as healing medicine, eating disorders and control related to them, the connection with bodies, creativity, writing a book, and the publishing process. She fully breaks down Ayurveda is, including what doshas are, her top Ayurveda tips utilizing it in daily life, dharma, how chakras connect to it, shamanic shaking, tongue-scraping and more. This episode is robust and packed with ancient wisdom that Sarah has modernized brilliantly. Her advice on family is one of the best answers I've gotten on that subject and she tells a magical story of a meaningful coincidence that changed her life and mine once I heard her tell it. I love this episode and the two-hundred that have preceded it. Thank you so much for listening.

199 | Sam Eckstein and Jordan Feldman of Springbone on Simple Cooking, Working with a Best Friend, Conflict Between Taste and Wellness + more
I sure love a good wellnessy cafe where I can order everything from avocado toast to chia pudding to a Reishi mushroom tea but what I love even more is a good story. Today's guests Jordan and Sam are long best friends and co-founders of Springbone a cafe I discovered just a couple weeks after moving to NYC and soon became a regular at. Springbone specializes in simple, natural food that blends taste and health with ease in every recipe. While I came in for the coconut milk soft-served I stayed because the founders Jordan and Sam were the nicest. Being super new to the city, the two native New Yorkers flooded me with suggestions of places I'd like all over the city. We shared an interest in simple cooking that didn't sacrifice taste for health and I was curious on how they went from working in finance and real estate to starting their dream business . All my questions and more were answered on this week's episode. We had a tangental conversation as usual where we covered working with your best friend and tips on how to keep both the friendship and business strong as well as their advice for being an entrepreneur in a field you aren’t an expert in. We discussed what health and wellness means to them, their thoughts on family, relationships, and spirituality. I loved talking to them and I'm so psyched to hang out with them more and hopefully you at our podcast meet-up at Springbone this week, RSVP here.

198 | Rachel Mansfield on Slowing Down, Unexpected Entrepreneurship, Finding Happiness with Your Body & Food+ more
I've been following Rachel's Instagram and drooling over her recipes and food styling for years, so when she was suggested as a guest by multiple listeners I knew I wanted to have podcast a conversation with her. One of the stranger things about hosting this podcast is that I get to invite myself into the homes and offices of people I've never met before. Rachel was chill, welcoming, and even sent me home with a delicious treat--a recipe she'd created that day. Not only is she a natural in the kitchen, she is kind, open to share, smart, and funny which you'll hear throughout our two hour tangential conversation which coved everything from changes in social media to relationships to cooking. We spoke about how she being unexpectedly fired from her job which ended up leading to her successfully make a career out of her passion for healthy recipe development and love of desserts. We talk about slowing down, the importance of presence, her start in blogging, how she made it her career, changes in Instagram, discipline vs. perfectionism, lessons from entrepreneurship, working from home, how her relationship to food and her body has evolved over the years, and much more. Spoiler alert from this episode: Rachel is as sweet in person as the treats she creates. Give it a listen and let us know what you think.

197 | my Favorites / Gratitudes + Karen Behnke founder of Juice Beauty + I 'let it out'
This episode starts and ends with me catching up [gushing] with you about how I've been feeling lately and sharing some things I've been too nervous to share on the podcast before. I talk about saying yes to too much, buckets of life, my general feeling of overwhelm as well as sharing what I've been loving and grateful for in the last month. This week I interviewed the smart, genuine, and fascinating entrepreneur Karen Behnke founder of my favorite make-up brand Juice Beauty. I'm obsessed with their products so I'm real happy I loved Karen their founder just as much. She honestly was one of the nicest, most down-to-earth people I've ever interviewed for this podcast. In this episode we talk about how we're both from Michigan, wellness in the 80’s, being vegetarian, being an entrepreneur, why green apples are great for your skin and how much we both love eating them with cinnamon on them, using food for beauty, finding your passions and turning that into a profession, motherhood, body-image, the sexism she's experienced in her career, what working with Gwyneth Paltrow is like and so much more.This is a very robust episode, hope you like it all! 196 | Lauren Handel Zander founder of the Handel Group on Lies, Time Management, Self Reflection + more!
I was introduced to the Handel Group over 3 years ago by Mastin Kipp who coached in their life coaching method. Ever since I've followed closely them work and even interviewed their former president Laurie Gerber in 2013 the year this podcast began. Since then became aware of their founder and today's guest Lauren Handel Zander as the tough, 'says it like it is', 'no non-sense' life-coach to successful people such as Dr. Mark Hyman and Elena Brower. She recently launched her first book Maybe It's You and when her publicist reached out for her to come on the podcast, I said absolutely and immediately set a date. We met a few weeks ago in person to record this between her packed day of client sessions and meetings. While Lauren is indeed tough which you'll hear in this episode, she is also deeply caring, empathetic, and full of wisdom. As she says, she deeply loves human beings and believes everyone is capable of living their dream if they simply release some blocks and negative patterns preventing them from coming true. That's where her and her life-coaching comes in. We spoke about her story of how she came to this work as well as got into how-to apply it using me as a guinea pig. We spoke on facing your darkness, calling out all your lies, what a lie lists is and why it's helpful in personal growth, time management and developing a relationship with time, and getting clear on your dreams.

195 | Aki Hirata Baker of Minka Brooklyn on Holistic Living, Flower Essences, Reiki, Dealing with Depression and more
I stumbled across Minka Brooklyn soon after moving to New York. It was one of those very Brooklyn places I was very thrilled existed and couldn't wait to check out now that I lived in the city. Aki, the founder was kind, nurturing, and sweet right off the bat. She gave me a tour of the space and a full treatment of Reiki and flower essences, both of witch I had never experienced. I knew immediately I wanted to now more about Aki, her story and the genesis of her holistic healing wonderland, Minka. We recorded this conversation a few weeks ago on a Sunday afternoon in her cozy office. We talked for hours on everything from holistic healing to her fascinating story of immigrating from Japan at 18, moving to New York, dealing with depression, motherhood, and entrepreneurship. We get into so many topics including dabbling in lots of different things, healing tools for depression, wellness, connecting to your true purpose, tarot readings, activism, self-care, masculine/feminine energies, flower essences, reiki, and so much more. Her advice on relationships is some of the best I've heard and there are so many wise moments throughout this. I know you'll love her throughout this long meandering conversation.

194 | Jamie Mendell on Big Decisions, Intuitive Living (& eating), Uncertainty, Body Image, Self Awareness + more!
I met Jamie last year through my best friend Simi who raved about her. We met when I was in town for my book launch and stayed in touch over the internet. When I moved to NYC I new Jamie was one of the people I was dying to get to know more and eventually record a podcast conversation with. While we'd only hung out a handful of times, speaking to her felt like speaking to an old friend. The conversation flowed with ease and meandered into a million directions from intuitive eating to making big decisions, uncertainty that comes with them, self-care, body image, eating disorders, comparison, self awareness, and career transitions. I caught up with Jamie in a really pivotal moment in her life, she's in a new romantic relationship and about to move away from the east coast for the first time. I can't get enough of Jamie, we had dinner last week and her chill energy, sound advice, and earnestness is magnetic. We recorded this in her Manhattan apartment a couple weeks ago, hope you love listening as much as I loved recording it.

192 | Tero Isokauppila of Four Sigmatic on Mushroom Hacks, Adaptogens, Family, Gratitude/Journaling + more!
Full show notes:: here
The coolest thing about the internet is how it allows you to connect with people all over the world you otherwise may never known. While I only met Tero Isokauppila for the first time this summer when we recorded this conversation in person while he was here in New York, we've been friends on the internet since early 2013. Tero's from Finland and founded the popular superfood mushroom brand Four Sigmatic over five years ago. While I've loved Four Sigmatic's products ever since I was one of the first bloggers in America to try them, my knowledge on the fungi kingdom, foraging, and the benefits of utilizing mushrooms was limited until this conversation. Wellness wise, we got identifying adaptogens, how to use powerful herbs, ‘mushroom hacks’, and why not all water is created equal. He answered everything I was curious about in the fascinating fungi kingdom. Beyond mushrooms we had a meandering conversation where we discussed everything from entrepreneurship, inclusivity in the wellness industry, the importance of family, cultural and education system differences in other countries, his life growing up in Finland and moving to the States, his thoughts on living in New York City, and his journaling, reflection/gratitude practice. Tero is a great guy and I loved finally meeting him in person and getting to record this episode. His new book Healing Mushrooms which you'll hear a bit about in this episode is out now and it's as great as he is. Hope you love this episode as much as I did.Taro is offering listeners 15% off any purchase of Four Sigmatic products. Just head over to the website and use the code KATIE at checkout!
