Episode 25: Serious Biomechanics with Gary Ward

I'm joined today by Gary Ward of Anatomy in Motion for a deep dive into the biomechanics of movement. Gary has a wonderful model for describing biomechanics, and focuses a lot of his efforts on the feet. In this episode, we talk about why the feet are so important for efficient, pain-free movement and the many ways that working the feet can help with function, rehabilitation, and overall performance. He talks about the simple foot wedges he developed and how using them to work the feet can even help issues that are far away and seem very unrelated -- like shoulder pain or restrictions. Gary also shares some insights into the education curriculum he offers for rehab and fitness professionals, which I definitely recommend for anyone who's interested!

Episode 24: Doing Hard Things

Inspired by Dave Asprey's new book on fasting, I recorded a few thoughts on the topic of "Doing Hard Things." Whether it's fasting, using the Neubie, doing breathing exercises, getting up early, taking a cold shower, or something else, doing hard things can build up our will power over time. Though it is a finite resource, this will power can give us the foundational strength necessary to do better in business, with our families, and in any other meaningful pursuit. It can enable us to power through difficult times, have the courage to engage in tough conversations, and learn to take responsibility when things go off course. Please let us know your favorite example of "doing hard things" and how it's helped you in your life!

He also gives us some insight into the range of patients he's seeing, sharing some interesting stories including how he's been able to help MS and pain patients as well as work he's done with athletes across the entire continuum of care -- from post-surgery rehab all the way through to some very interesting performance training.

Episode 22: How Direct Current Therapy Helped This Practitioner's Business Thrive

Master Trainer and Rehab Specialist Jean-Paul Francouer of Little Rock, Arkansas knew from his extensive career that it often wasn't just the structural components, or hardware, of the body that were responsible for compensatory movement patterns and pain, but the nervous system, or software, that needed training. As he shares in this episode of The Undercurrent Podcast, that belief led him to electrical stimulation therapies and specifically direct current. Once he integrated the Neubie into his practice, not only was he able to retain clients for longer by moving them from rehab into fitness training, but he grew so busy that he hired someone to take on his burgeoning client load.

Episode 21: A New Take on Treating Pain

When I met Andrew Bloch, ATC, PT, L.Ac., we immediately connected over our shared perspective on the importance of the nervous system. His philosophy on treating pain is very unique and interesting, and I am excited to share this episode with you. As he describes in the podcast, his treatment approach is based on wanting to help people feel better and get out of pain first, so that they can then have the energy to focus on getting well. This approach involves resetting the autonomic nervous system to reduce pain immediately. Typical practice is done in the opposite order, focusing first on the structure (i.e. what is tight/weak) and on fixing those things with the *hope* that it will help the person feel better at the end of the process. With chronic pain, however, it is often more neurological than structural, and a different approach may be needed. He also has an excellent perspective on how to describe pain to patients and use metaphors that resonate with people. Instead of starting with an intimidating diagnosis that may add to the stress of a patient already in pain, he offers tangible descriptions that can demystify pain and help get patients to buy in to their treatment plan.
