Ep 117: 10 Financial Tips for Freelancers (with The Freelance CFO Katelyn Magnuson)

One of the things we’ve never discussed on this show is MONEY. Even though I know it’s one of the topics that we wish people spoke more openly about. A lot of us are flying pretty blind in our money situation. Are we making enough? Are we saving enough? Are we spending or investing it right? How much money could I *actually* make if I started a side hustle? A year of the pandemic has made a lot people rethink their careers, and there’s a lot of interest in going full time freelance, pursuing a passion, or monetizing a creative pursuit. My guest for this episode is Katelyn Magnuson, aka The Freelance CFO, and she’s here to give us 10 Tips for Going Freelance. We start with some basics, but i’ve been in the freelance game for over a decade, and I still learned a lot in this conversation. Ep 116: Selfie Shame

Now THIS is a topic I've been wanting to cover for a long time. Because whenever I do a social media challenge (like the currently running #OneDayMay) and I encourage people to post a selfie (as I often do), I scroll through tons of posts where women are APOLOGIZING for their self-portrait in the caption. There are many reasons both personal and cultural that we feel extra vulnerable about taking and sharing selfies on social media, but in this episode I’m talking about the three most common reasons I see: We’re unhappy with the way we look We feel like selfies are indulgent, narcissistic, and annoying We don’t mind being in photos, but we wish someone else was taking them I look at selfies from all kinds of angles in this episode, hoping that it leads away from selfie shame and into selfie empowerment. But I also want to talk about why we judge other people’s selfies, and my unpopular opinion about oversharing. FULL SHOW NOTES HERE. SPONSORS: Rothys. BONUS: Competitive Grieving (A conversation with author Nora Zelevansky)

Author Nora Zelevansky is my the very first novelist I've ever had on 10 Things To Tell You! We're discussing her new book (out May 11) Competitive Grieving, a darkly comic novel about the dynamics of friendship following loss. Competitive Grieving is inspired by true events in Nora's life, and we talk about the themes and and relatability of her fictionalized version.  Nora was one of the first friends I ever made in Los Angeles, and she's also one of the co-founders of the original book club I talk about so often. We have been friends, confidants, and cheerleaders for one another for almost two decades and I am so happy to welcome her to the show.  Competitive Grieving is Nora Zelevansky's third novel and this is a spoiler-free conversation.  FULL SHOW NOTES HERE.  Follow @norazelevansky on IG Buy Competitive Grieving here * Thank you for listening and sharing 10 Things To Tell You. Ep 115: Taking up space (with Kate Kennedy of Be There in Five)

When I first found Kate Kennedy's podcast Be There in Five, I just wanted Taylor Swift analysis. But I stayed for her series on Mommy Bloggers. Then I couldn't get enough of her pop culture commentary, hilarious tangents, and well-researched episodes about everything I wanted to talk about (that other people weren't talking about).  I also texted every podcast friend I have to ask, "Have you seen what Kate Kennedy is doing?" Because her show was defying all the rules. Be There in Five's episodes are often 2+ hours long, and mostly solo. It was empowering to watch a woman unapologetically take up so much space with her words and ideas and air time. AND be smart and funny on top of it.  So I was beyond excited to have this conversation with Kate about leaning into your skillset, finding your own personal "football game," and what "being authentic" means when you're one person online and another with your family. Announcing #OneDayMay!

It feels high time for another social media challenge, right? To get us into the habit of sharing ourselves and simply for FUN.  As a spinoff of my popular annual challenge #OneDayHH and last year's quarantine challenge #OneDayCV, I'm introducing #OneDayMAY. Thirty-one mini prompts for every day in the month of May, designed to get us sharing.  Because I believe sharing is the antidote to loneliness and the key to connection. I also know that it doesn't come naturally to everyone. These social media challenges are happy, helpful prompts that get us to show up and be present.  You can view all of the prompts HERE.  I'll also be posting them daily on IG @10ThingsToTellYou And answering them for myself on IG @laura.tremaine See you on social media starting May 1! Ep 112: Who was there? (A Conversation with Shauna Niequist)

Whenever I hear someone speak of a mentor or extra wise friend, I always think about my relationship with Shauna Niequist. We met working together at a summer camp when we were both young, and she then has offered me truth and guidance for more than two decades. Shauna Niequist is a NYT best-selling author of five books: Cold Tangerines, Bittersweet, Bread & Wine, Savor, and Present Over Perfect. She lives in New York City with her husband Aaron and their two sons. I wrote about Shauna in Share Your Stuff. I'll Go First. in Chapter 2: Who was there? Shauna was there in one of the most important conversations of my life, when I called her heartbroken in Oklahoma and she answered the phone at exactly the right moment in Chicago.  In this episode, we talk about belonging, and magical moments, and books (because we both just love to talk about books). As usual, she left me with several things to ponder after we were done speaking, specifically about what we're actually saying when we share our pain.  Follow Shauna on IG Follow Shauna on FB FULL SHOW NOTES HERE Sponsors: Prose. Ep 111: Behind-The-Scenes of Publishing, Launching, and Marketing a Book

This episode is for anyone interested in the peek behind the curtain of the book publishing industry.  Back when writing a book was just a dream, I made a promise to myself that if I ever published, I would share the experience openly and candidly. I used to crave all the information about agents and book deals and publicity and marketing and all the things that it seemed like authors very rarely talked about. Back on Ep 73: I wrote a book! I shared about everything I knew up to that point: getting attention from agents, shopping a book proposal, and, of course, writing and editing my first book. Because I'm now on the other side of the book launch, this episode is a follow up to Ep 73. Here we're going to talk about mostly marketing: Are preorder bonuses a bribe? Is traditional publishing going the way of the dinosaur? Who pays for the publicity? How does getting paid to write a book work? I'm joined for this conversation by my friend Kelly Gordon, because I knew she would be a great person to talk through this topic. Kelly is a co-host of the Sorta Awesome podcast.  Follow Kelly on IG Follow Sorta Awesome on IG Also on the show, I mention two other places I'm doing a deep dive on the publishing process: The Big Boo Cast BONUS episode with Laura Tremaine Laura Tremaine as a Tuesday Teacher for hope*writers   FULL SHOW NOTES HERE Sponsors: BetterHelp.
