Ep 190: Whose voice lives rent free in your head? (And how to mute them)

This episode is for anyone who struggles with outside influences they can't shake.  I thought when I turned 40 that I had turned a corner in my personal developement, that the shift into caring less about other people's opinions would also mean that my inner critic would pipe down.  But here I am, a few years down the road, and the voices from my past live rent-free in my head and their chatter can affect my confidence and my choices.  In this episode, I'm talking about the five types of voices that rattle around in our heads and how we can identify them and turn down their volume.  FULL SHOW NOTES ARE HERE   SPONSORS: HelloFresh // Go To HelloFresh.com/50YOU and use code 50YOU for 50% off plus free shipping   SUBSCRIBE to 10 Things To Tell You so you never miss an episode! Ep 189: About the Hollywood Strikes (and How They Affect You)

This episode is for anyone who cares about tv and movies.  I have 10 things to tell you about the historic Hollywood strikes of 2023. The Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild have been fighting for wage increases, protection against artificial intelligence, and more. Think it doesn't affect you? Think again! Here are the 10 Things I talk through in this episode: What are the basics of the strike? What is the history here? What exactly do Hollywood writers do? How do they get paid? So why are they striking?  (And what does striking mean? Can they not work at all?) What does mandatory staffing mean? What is the AI threat? Some notable things that happened during this strike.  What was finally negotiated?  How does this all affect the viewer? I want this show to be about connection, conversation, and sharing our stuff. The Hollywood strikes are something our family cares about, so I'm sharing it here with you.  If this episode teaches you something, please share it on social media or with a friend.  FULL SHOW NOTES ARE HERE   MENTIONED in this episode: Secret Stuff Episode with Jill Killington Smartest Person in the Room: Hollywood Series Deadline Hollywood Fran Drescher speech   SPONSORS: Betterhelp // Go to Betterhelp.com/YOU for 10% off your first month   SUBSCRIBE to 10 Things To Tell You so you never miss an episode! Ep 188: Moms and the Mental Load (with Dr. Morgan Cutlip)

This episode is for moms who are drowning in this season. After years of rarely talking about parenthood on this show, this topic suddenly continues to find me. I'm not sure if this because of my kids' ages (11 & 13) or just the season I'm in, but motherhood is something I want to talk about more now than I did when the kids were young.  My guest today is Dr. Morgan Cutlip, a highly sought after relationship expert, who has helped hundreds of thousands of people worldwide learn how to form and maintain healthy relationships. Dr. Morgan has been a featured relationship expert with Good Morning America, Teen Vogue, and The New York Times. Her new book, Love Your Kids Without Losing Yourself, is out now. Dr. Morgan and I talk about motherhood as an identity and the mental load of parenting that so often falls more heavily on women. We also discuss how that affects our mood, our partnerships and sex drive. I even share a real life example of this dynamic happening in my home right now. If you've been carrying the mental load in your family, I hope this conversation resonates with you and that you'll know you're not alone.  LEARN MORE ABOUT DR. MORGAN CUTLIP HERE FOLLOW DR. Ep 187: Book Bans: 5 Things A Librarian Wants You To Know

The episode is for anyone looking for an insider perspective on the rise of book bans in America. My life’s greatest passion is reading. Books are my lifeblood. And so you will not be surprised that I have been greatly alarmed by the rise of book bans in America in the last few years. The idea of banning books is so archaic to me, so outdated, so harmful, it’s as if we have learned NOTHING from history. My guest is writer and librarian Emily Jones. As a former teacher and current librarian in Arkansas, Emily shares her perspective on the fear and concern around certain books that are available in these public spaces.  FOLLOW EMILY on IG FOLLOW EMILY on TIKTOK SIGN UP FOR THE 7-DAY FREE TRIAL of SECRET STUFF FULL SHOW NOTES HERE   MENTIONED in this episode: The Origin of the Species by Charles Darwin Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood How To Be An AntiRacist by Ibram X. Ep 186: College Roommates, Marriage Pacts, and Overdue Apologies (A Secret Tapes Conversation with my Soul Sister Lindsay Lawler)

This episode is for anyone who has (or wants) a Soul Sister.  In my book about friendship THE LIFE COUNCIL: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs, I write about my freshman college roommate and longtime LA roommate Lindsay Lawler. In the book, and in my life, Lindsay occupies the seat on my my life council that I call the SOUL SISTER. And in this conversation you’re going to see why. We have been connected spiritually and logistically and our lives have been intertwined since we were 18 years old. In this episode, Lindsay and I talk about living in the dorms together, living in the Hollywood hills together, the ways we (accidentally) broke one another's hearts, and the ways we light each other up. Our bond and this conversation is a special one.   But the BIG reason I wanted to share this Secret Tapes conversation with Lindsay with you right now is that Lindsay is a singer and songwriter based in nashville and her latest album comes out this week! It’s called Peaches Holyoke and the first single Trying To Get Back To Texas is available on all streaming platforms now.  This is Lindsay’s first full length album in 8 years, it features 13 tracks, and you might also hear that new single Trying To Get Back To Texas spinning on OUTLAW COUNTRY on Sirius XM Channel 62.  I love Lindsay, I love her music, and after listening to this excerpt of our Secret Tapes conversation about our deep friendship for over 25 years, i think you will love her too.  FULL SHOW NOTES ARE HERE   MENTIONED in this episode: Ep 28: Motherhood Through Adoption with Lindsay Lawler Ep 164: Are We Friends Or Not? Ep 185: Analyzing the Results of the Listener Survey

This episode is for anyone interested in how the podcast sausage gets made. We're doing something a little different in this episode. I'm analyzing the results of this summer's podcast listener survey, where more than 1,000 people gave their feedback on 10 Things To Tell You. Listeners shared their favorite (and least favorite) episodes of the show, and suggested topics and guests for the future.  I wanted to talk these results through with you because I value your feedback and want to involve you in the bigger picture of what we're creating here. I love making 10 Things To Tell You for you, and I also want to continue to make it helpful and entertaining.  I'm also sharing some of my personal thoughts on the state of the podcasting industry right now, and as a listener, you're part of that industry. So I'm giving a little peek behind the curtain of what's happening from the creator side, based on my own experience and from conversations with many of my podcast friends.    FULL SHOW NOTES ARE HERE   MENTIONED in this episode: Sorta Awesome podcast Smartest Person in the Room podcast Are you a chili cooker or a pizza orderer? This episode is for anyone looking to transition well between the end of summer and beginning of fall.  Whether you mark the end of summer by the school calendar, the weather, or football season, we have come to the end of the season.  In this episode, I'm walking through 8 questions to ask yourself as we close one chapter of the year and enter into another. As usual, these questions work best when you share them with a friend, partner, coworker, or the whole family. They're also great for taking to your journal and sitting with your thoughts in this seasonal transition.  FULL SHOW NOTES ARE HERE   MENTIONED in this episode: Ep. 180: Four Metaphors For Turning 44 Ep. 181: Favorite Things (Right Now) Summer 2023 On Our Best Behavior by Elise Loehnen Monsters: A Fan's Dilemma by Claire Dederer Atomic Habits by James Clear   SPONSORS: SECRET STUFF by Laura Tremaine   SUBSCRIBE to 10 Things To Tell You so you never miss an episode! Ep 182: 10 Things About 10 Years of Therapy

This episode is for the therapy-curious and therapy champions. Ten years ago this summer, I was in one of the lowest points of my life. I had a toddler and a baby, was grieving the death of a loved one, the diagnosis of another loved one, and the near-fatal crisis of yet another loved one. My husband was away making a movie, so I was solo parenting and circumstantially very isolated during a rainy season that had flooded our home.  And also....I had just started therapy for the first time.  I needed the therapy. Making that phone call was one of the best decisions I've ever made. But as many people will tell you: it often gets (a lot) worse before it gets better.  In this episode, I'm sharing 10 Things About Therapy that I've learned or noticed or want to share after 10 years of being on this journey.  There are practical tips and also my personal stories. This is completely my own experience and not meant to be prescriptive or authoritative - just me, sharing my stuff.  FULL SHOW NOTES HERE   MENTIONED in this episode: My first book Share Your Stuff.
