Opportunities come and go, industries come and go, markets come and go. But what causes entire markets to thrive and what causes them to die? Not only that, how can we better understand these cycles to better take advantage of opportunity? The last thing any of us wants to do is to invest in a dying market. This means we have to be able to look at and effectively analyze relevant metrics within those businesses and markets. This means understanding risk and planning for it. It also means understanding both the micro and the macroeconomics of an industry and business. What can you control and what do you have zero control over in these arenas? How does policy and regulation affect and potentially affect that market? This is just the surface of what we’re going to cover in today’s episode. Cash flow is the absolute king of business. If it's not there… you’re in trouble. This all comes down to the business, the industry, and your specific value proposition. This comes down to timing, overcoming challenges, and making educated and calculated decisions day to day. I’m going to share a bit about my journey on today’s podcast and how different the landscape and the opportunity is today than it was years ago when I got started. In some ways, there is immeasurably more opportunity and in some ways, there’s less. But the fact remains, opportunity exists to create incredible businesses, with incredible cash flow, so that you can live an incredible life. No matter what endeavor we set out on, no matter what direction we want to go in life, no matter what we do there will always be unknowns. Sometimes we like to fool ourselves into thinking that we have something 100% figured out, that our path forward is totally linear. This is almost never the case. Life has a great way of reminding us every now and then about how much control we don’t have. Shoot, take me for example! I was doing great in the insurance world, bought a brokerage because I was going to crush it, and that totally fell apart. I recovered from that, began pouring capital into self storage, was totally crushing it, and then WHAM… I win the lottery and end up with GBS, on life support, and have to learn how to eat, and walk all over again. Bottom line? We never truly know what’s waiting for us around the bend. This can sound kind of blue and pretty hopeless right? Well, there’s a few things we can do to build a shield for us and our families to help weather these unknowns when they strike. Yes, you still get hit, but you have at least some barrier, some protection against what could have been a killing blow. This shield is exactly what we’re talking about in today’s podcast. There’s something I hear quite a bit and I heard it more when I first started doing all this content and sharing my business and self storage investing “secrets” with the world. You guys and even friends have asked me, “AJ, why are you sharing all this information with everyone?” Or “Why are you doing all this work on content?” Well let me break it down for you. The truth is - me sharing this information doesn’t hurt me, doesn’t hurt my businesses, the self storage industry, and it certainly doesn’t hurt those looking to learn more about business or investing. Yes you could try and make the argument that I’m creating more competition… you could TRY, but you’d be wrong. Sharing this information actually accomplishes the complete opposite - it helps me, it helps the industries I'm in, and of course, it helps you. And it DOESN’T create more competition. Just think about this - because of these podcasts, videos, live events and so on that I’ve created and hosted, how many deals have been done? How many friends have been made? How many legacies have been started? How much freedom has someone been able to inject into their lives? It’s not even calculable, but just from the stories I’ve heard and even know about… the impact has been massive and it’s been staggering. In today’s podcast I’m going to dive into all of this. I’m going to share why it’s been so important for me to build these brands, this content, and this legacy. I’m going to share what we do, how we do it, and why fundamentals are great but learning the actionable steps to those fundamentals is SO much better. I did all of my personally branded content under that brand name. That changed, the YouTube channel went away, and podcast became inconsistent. Now, that is all about to change. I am totally re-creating this podcast, and re-launching what used to be the Cashflow 2 Freedom YouTube Channel, and will be branding it as the AJ Osborne YouTube Channel. Now you might wondering… why is AJ doing this? Well, that’s exactly what I’m going to talk about in today’s episode. You see, my companies are growing, opportunities are changing, and the value that I can deploy and receive from doing content like this and building my brands is immeasurable. For those of you who haven’t heard my story - several years ago I went from totally healthy and normal, to in just a matter of hours, becoming completely and totally paralyzed because of a rare autoimmune disorder called Guillain-Barré syndrome. In a single immediate moment my life and my family’s lives were turned upside down. At first no one even knew what I had. The doctors couldn’t figure it out and even sent me home. Only for me to return to the hospital as paralysis began to take hold. It was terrifying and uncertain times, but this was just the beginning. I’m here today to tell you my story. Some of you might already know of me and my story, but today is something a bit more in depth in regard to the whole experience. Because as awful and difficult as it all was, yes, it was the best thing that ever happened to me. You’ll have to tune in to learn why.
